I wanted to volunteer for this nonprofit due to this change and the creation of BT1D Central PA (Harrisburg) separate from where the office is located (Pittsburgh area - BT1D Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia). The nonprofit organization had a community event at a local university that I help at frequently, HACC, and I attended on March 15, 2026. No agenda or information was shared beforehand, but there were two of us asking questions from an adult type 1 diabetes perspective. The main speaker was strong (from the Pittsburgh area) and she offered to be the connection for the non-juvenile needs and no staff introduced themselves at the event or as a follow-up. There was a very low attendance. The nonprofit posted a few weeks after the event asking for Harrisburg-based "Community Manager" volunteers. I met with the Pittsburgh staff member and said I would be glad to make phone calls for donations, but would like to organize an online education meeting in the next few months to address the needs I heard at the HACC summit, adults in the Harrisburg area that are not receiving high-quality type 1 diabetes information but do not have time to attend in-person events. At first the Pittsburgh team didn't answer my outreach (several weeks) and then they said they didn't need my time as a volunteer. When I reached out to the national leadership, they encouraged me to ignore my local chapter and reach out to NJ or other regions that were more forward with their work. Breakthrough T1D: Do you care about reaching out to your new adult audience? If you do, then ensure all of your chapters are following your national focus and taking basic measures to share educational resources in a manner that serves the local community. Out of your social media posts for Central PA this month, half have no reactions and all others have three or less reactions and no comments. I am sharing so that others do waste significant time as I did - one day of travel/participation at HACC conference, three online meetings and emails - when the nonprofit does not want to accept volunteers unless they are solely focused on fundraising.

But it really is a great chapter and organization as a whole. 85 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to research (which is really high for non profits). And a lot of the money goes back into the SD community because San Diego's unique community with research, biotechs and universities. A lot of JDRF's work is volunteer and grassroots based, as they only have 5 staff members, yet still raise a few million each year. There are several events per year, the Walk to Cure Diabetes in October, The Promise Ball in May, Recipe for a Cure in February.

A plethora of scientific papers are published each year from this institute and very significant research is done by the many labs of SBMRI. SBMRI is probably often over looked due to its close vicinity to UCSD and Scripps, but it is nonetheless a wonderful institute doing amazing research. The employees of SBMRI are also some of the nicest, most intelligent people I have ever met! They are super friendly and down-to-earth. Side note: their cafeteria (located in building 5) is delicious!!

While Dr. Bentley spends as much time as you need, he truly listens, HEAARS. AND BELIEVES,an absolute rarity in this area, I know. He found a severe shoulder and elbow injury, crippling literally unable to use, swollen, which i had sought help for, for 20 years, from most of the doctors listed here, who ignored me, didn't examine me, even ridiculed me, disbelieving that I could have this horribly painful injury for 20 years. Of course Dr.B. prescribed surgery I needed immediately, Being a severe "polytrauma" patient, this injury was one of many misdiagnosed by others, with cruelty, which he found, broken thumbs, pelvis, extruding discs, torn meniscus, broken ribs, wrists, leg, If you can imagine the pain,ignored,belittled, even lied about by other Drs here, until I found this angel, who literally has saved my life many times, the lives of others. He has found many defective, grossly wrong, MRIs I've had done here, as so many are the public wouldn't believe. H always studies them carefully, and will order another one if needed, my broken pelvis was "missed" by MRI. Others were wrong deliberately altering my severe damage, it is so frightening. all the more reason I thank God for Dr. Bentley! Ieven had most DEADLY blood clots in my legs, and lungs, pulmonary embolisms, which my D.O., missed, for months, I was literally dying, unable to walk, with conspicuous visable, syptoms, and went to him in desperation. Though NOT HIS JOB, AREA, he took one look at me and put me in the hospital, saved my life!!! TRULY AN ANGEL, the only real orthopedist in north county, only one of 2 real doctors here, a healer bar none. hE doesn't keep you waiting, respects you, your time, unlike the orthopedic "mills" in this area, the monopolies, where you wait for 2 hours at times, only to be misdiagnosed! If you value your life, your body, Dr. Bentley is the only Dr. to see, to allow to perform surgery.He is truly a "hippocratic", healer who also won't have you come back time after time, for each body part injured or painful as every other orthopeidst here does, for greater income, billing. This is how people like me, with "polytraumas", more than one part injured as is most common in car or other accidents. end up not diagnosed, treated, for severe, maiming, permanently disabling, injuries, needing urgent surgery! As the hospital E.R. usually does as well! The ER, there for trauma, dismissed me with black eyes, a bloody, broken face, nose, ribs, sternum, herniated discs, torn up knees, just did again to me after a horrible fall, head injury, sending me home in this condition!!!! I found this place on the internet. I had varicose veins. The type of varicose vein I am talking…read moreabout are the ones that are below the knee on the front and back of the leg AND bulge out. I originally was looking to do the venus procedure or sclerotherapy after doing some research on the latest treatment. My brother and father had their veins stripped long ago and didnt want to do that (they rarely do it anyhow). I originally met with a Doctor in La JolIa, however, I have learned to always get a second opinion and sometimes a third. Thats another story. Anyhow, I called their number and I got lucky when a Rosemary or Rosemarie picked up the phone. She me set up for a consultation that afternoon. She made sure my insurance would cover everything and personally set up my appts too. I met with Dr Rattner. He was great. He went to some good schools AND he had a good "bedside personallity". One of those doctors that explained things before I asked my 20 questions AND told you what was going to happen before he would do anything etc. And I did ask this guy about all the treatments out there and I asked many many questions. He advised me to go with laser therapy on a vein between my knee and my hip on each leg (same as the La Jolla doc), stating this was the source of my problem of tired legs and bulging veins below my knee. The problems below my knee were the result of a bad valve above the knee and the problems below would probably go away with the laser therapy above the knee. My plan with the first doctor was to do laser above followed (this getting too long!) sclerotherapy below. He suggested first doing above, waiting to see what happened below the knee with the veins. Two weeks after the laser above, my lower veins looked improved, but still visible. He said that he could do a phlebectomy or schlero that day, but he said more than 90% of the buldging would be gone in about 6 months. Well, I am writing this today because I did not go with the lower leg surgery and its only been 2-3 months and 90% of the bulging is gone and I didnt do the unnecessary surgery he advised. The plan was to wait six months and see. It was tempting to just have the second phase done and have immediate cosmetic results, but I did not. My tired / heavy legs disappeared, but I am worried they might be coming back. Originally, i thought my heavy legs were just bcuz i am getting older, but it went away! Feel free to message me through yelp with any questions and I will post the question here and answer it. HOWEVER, I only check messages once in a while. This took too much time! but i am thankful everything went smoothly with this doctor. other notes, I liked how they called me to check on me. No billing headaches. I had the option of emailing the doctor if I wanted to. I never did email this doctor. I emailed the La Jolla doctor and did not get a response. Kinda lead me to this guy. My only advice to you (and to the doc to tell his paitents), take ibuprofen after the surgery. I was told to take it if there was pain, but I am the type that avoids meds and thought it normal for the soreness. it vanished after i took it. I believe it reduced swelling inside my leg and the swelling created the soreness. I only took advil like 2-3 times. I just wished I took it sooner. They have two offices. The one in SD was not in a super fancy building, but I scored by going to this place. Anyhow, I am writing this review because I am grateful that he did not put me through an extra surgery on each leg (both legs had problems). He would have made more $ if he swayed me that way....

He was really the ONLY ONE who stepped up and seemed to care when I had a recent health issue to deal with. Most of my experiences with doctors here in San Diego (I come from the Bay Area) have been pretty much 'mediocre'.
