Paraiso Otono is a sculpture of a bronze peacock and peahen created in 2002 by artist A.E. Ted Aub. This art piece is located on a wall in the courtyard of the Shops at Merrick Park in Coral Gables. Look for it in front of Lululemon.
Artist A.E. Ted Aub is a Professor of Art and Architecture in upstate New York at Hobart and William and Smith Colleges. He currently lives in Geneva New York and he also works in Italy. His career has been divided into teaching and working as a sculptor for galleries and public commissions. Many of his works features portraits and head studies and he likes to infuse humor in his art either in the subject or by using a palindrome in the title. His most famous piece is called When Anthony Met Stanton and it is displayed in Seneca Falls New York. The piece depicts when abolitionist Elizabeth Cady Stanton was introduced by her friend to Susan B. Anthony, a moment that sparked the women's voting rights movement. Aub has exhibited his work all over the world.
I really love peacocks so this art piece immediately caught my eye in Merrick Park. On the piece is a quote from Coral Gables founder George Merrick "This is only true, I cannot dream, even, Dear, without you." I wasn't the only one who loved these peafowl. While I was in the area several people stopped to have their pictures taken in front of the sculpture and a little boy ending up sitting on top of the peacock's back for half an hour and ultimately had to be coaxed down by his parents. There are a lot of peafowl roaming free in Coral Gardens so I like how this sculpture represents the beloved avian residents of Coral Gables. Once you know Ted Aub's work you can easily spot his other art pieces in the area. read more
