I discovered Minna while exploring Pride Park in Miami Beach. Minna is a 2022 public art piece of a 16 foot tall steel mesh woman's head by artist Jaume Plensa. Plensa was born in 1955 in Barcelona, Spain. He studied at the Llotja School of Art and Design and at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts. He has received many national and international awards and exhibits his art in Europe, Asia, and the United States. He is well known for his public art pieces installed in many cities throughout the world. Since 1996 he has also collaborated on many theater and opera projects. He also created another large scale sculpture I love, Looking Into My Dreams Awilda which is next to the Perez Art Museum in Maurice A. Ferré Park in Miami.
Minna was donated by Irma and Norman Braman to the City of Miami Beach Art in Public Places Collection. The Bramans were instrumental in bringing Art Basel to Miami. You can find Minna across the street from the Miami Beach Convention Center. Minna is meant to convey to viewers that we are all beautiful on the outside but even more beautiful on the inside. I love the message of this piece nd how she almost disappears depending on the angle you are looking at her. Right now it is a little hard to see Minna because she is behind a fence where they are installing a tent for Miami Design Week. Hopefully she will be released from her cage soon and back on full display. read more
