Unfortunately, during a busy holiday weekend like Father's Day, quiet hours were not enforced at all. There were barking dogs, loud music, yelling, and even gunshots well past midnight. To make matters worse, a nearby RV/trailer ran its generator all night right next to our tent, making it nearly impossible to sleep, and no one stepped in to address any of it. Also want to note that during the busy Saturday morning, all the restroom was completely out of toilet paper. We've always loved Bucks Lake, which is why this experience was so disappointing. The rowdy atmosphere and lack of enforcement left a bad taste in our mouths and made for a frustrating and sleepless camping trip.

From their website: Nestled among scented pine trees in a deep cove at the south end of Bucks Lake, Haskins Valley Campground is a popular vacation spot in California's Plumas County. A portion of the 65 campsites can now be reserved through the handy online system. Haskins Valley Campground has a trailer/camper sanitary station, double vault toilets and a nearby boat ramp. RVs up to 40 feet in length can be accommodated on a few of the no-hookup sites, which feature tables, food lockers, fire rings with grill and piped water. The campground is part of Pacific Gas and Electric Co.'s recreation area which centers around enticing Bucks Lake. The lake is home to five kinds of sport fish, and is a terrific place to swim, boat and water ski. It is remote, but there is a general store just across the street should you need anything. No flushing toilets, but everything seemed clean and orderly. For 4th of July weekend it was still relatively quiet, the weather was fantastic and the swimming really is perfect! I would return.

My partner and I wanted to have our wedding reception at Pulga, but ultimately we were unable to…read moreproceed because Betsy, the owner, was unprofessional: she was uncommunicative, temperamental and very disrespectful. Here are the key points: 1. Once we came up for a site visit, we waited for over 2 weeks for her to send over the draft contract. We checked in frequently with text messages/emails to keep things moving, and we would either not get a response or she would promise the contract by a certain date and fail to deliver or even follow-up. 2. Once we received it, we attempted to make contract modifications as the language in her stock indemnification language is extremely punitive for clients. She initially refused to even engage with a discussion... finally I was able to get her on the phone. 3. During the discussion, she became irate, going so far as to tell me to "go find another venue" when I was trying to explain my position. During the call, her language was abusive, mocking and unprofessional. It was so far over the line, her husband -- who was participating -- told her that if he were me, he wouldn't want to do business with or pay her money at this point. I walked away from the call realizing that she was gaslighting me and felt generally terrible (not exactly what you want going into your wedding). She seemed unable to grasp that she was our vendor and needed to treat us with respect. 4. Regardless of red flags, we agreed to go forward with her standard language because we really wanted to have the event there. However, she refused to countersign the contract, stating that typically she signs the contract day-of the event. Given how things had progressed to that point, we weren't comfortable handing over a 5k deposit for an unsigned agreement with her. My partner tried multiple times to get her to sign, but she ignored his communications (he went so far as to send her a video explaining how to electronically sign it as she said she didn't know how to do it using her own contracting tool!). Pulga was a cool spot to visit, if only it were in better management it would be a great place to host a party of event.

Location: it's about a 3 hour drive from Oakland and the view along the drive is absolutely gorgeous! The largest city next to Pulga is Oroville so stock up if you need supplies - bug repellent, sunblock, etc. There are many cabins with 1 - maybe 5 beds. Basically you have a choice. Some cabins have 1 bed and others have bunk beds or full mattresses. Some cabins have electricity and bathrooms, others do not. No worries, there are bathrooms near the cabins without. Activities: you can hike to a waterfall, sit and/or swim by the river, lay around in the hammock, and just relax. Food: Betsy is an amazing cook and studied under significant executive chefs. Bring an empty stomach because you WILL eat very well. Every meal I ate was a delight! Customer Service: Betsy and her team are really nice. They brought drinks and snacks every couple of hours and just to check in on you. Very nice staff! The highlight of my trip was taking a shower outside. There are a couple of outdoor showers and tubs. Some are private (i.e. people can't see you) and public bathing areas. Highly recommend renting the Town of Pulga if you want to disconnect and relax!

We lived up in Paradise, California for 21 years and had many times when we were holding events and had lots of relatives coming into town for a visit and needing a comfortable bed for the night. We heard nothing but rave reviews from all of them about the Ponderosa Gardens Motel. We needed a room one night and called up to book it. The front desk were very kind and the room rates reasonable. We loved the pool! It is clean and refreshing. The entire motel is appealing to the eye and you can tell that the owners have worked very hard to create such a meticulous motel. The fire up in Paradise, California in 2018 necessarily closed them down, but they worked very hard and made the motel even nice than it was before! Hard to believe they could outdo themselves, but they did and they are open for business again. Yippee! I'm going to be calling their reservation desk to make time this summer to get back up there and relax for a few days. It is quiet up in Paradise and it is such a lovely motel I've just got to get up there and check it out again. One more thing - Paradise is in the foothills above Chico, California, so if you're looking for a place to stay for an event in Chico, keep Ponderosa Gardens Motel in mind. It takes about 15 minutes to get from Paradise down to Chico, 20 minutes from Paradise to the Chico Butte College campus and 10-15 minutes to get to the main campus, 30 minutes to get from Paradise to the Chico State University.
