The interiors of these cabins are very clean and well-kept, with recent renovations. We were very comfortable during our stay here and are looking forward to returning. The kitchen was clean and completely equipped, and the main living area had plenty of space for the two of us to stretch out and relax. Bedrooms were a little small, and the mattresses softer than I'd like, but were OK for a week. The bathroom looked recently remodeled. Shower stall was awesome--large, with the nozzle high enough to spray my 6'6" frame without me bending down. That's almost never been the case at a rental cabin. Wifi was generally reliable, but went out several times, usually briefly. The view of course is wonderful. Having Lake Superior right outside your window is reason enough to stay here. With so much to do around Paradise, our main regret was not staying another week,

The owners are good people. Went and visited the Great Shipwreck Museum (go visit it) and drove west to some of the National park sites all in one day. Good location and nice place to stay.

They're in the hospitality business selling rest and relaxation. Responsiveness is important, but…read moreapparently they may not realize it. We have been try to make human contact since March 25, 2019. It's now April 10th. Hello??? After trying to call the Hilltop several times for information and booking, we visited the Hilltop website to make reservations for a 5 day stay. We were able to book a room for 3 days; it was booked for the remaining 2 days we planned to stay. Fine - we'll book a second room and move to that room after 3 days. According to their website, other rooms are available but couldn't be booked because the way the website is set up. When trying to book a different room for the remaining 2 days the message "no rooms available or a longer stay is required" pops up. Even though we meet the minimum stay requirement, we can't book available rooms for the remainder of our stay. Fine - we'll call them (According to YELP, they're OPEN). We call several times. Crickets. They don't answer their phone OR return calls. Fine - we'll EMAIL them. They don't answer their email. The lack of response makes us rethink our accommodation options (along with the other 6 people who already booked, and were planning on staying). Either the UP had a major telecommunication failure or these folks have no sense of urgency, don't care, or don't understand the significance of customer service. Recognizing that Hilltop isn't the Hilton, how difficult is it to return phone calls or emails? Even if Hilltop wasn't open for the season yet, or they were away, they still should be answering the phone, returning messages and email. Oh, and Revise your YELP listing if you aren't open 24/7 as advertised.

From the moment our family crossed the threshold of this beautiful vacation rental, a feeling of…read moreserenity swept over me. The present owners have decorated the all-amenities interior with affirmative signage that seems to encourage the occupants to soak in the restorative surroundings which include a private lake front great for fishing, wading, birding, or adventuring out in a classic rowboat. Although it'd be tempting to spend an entire visit just reading on the deck or stretched out in the spacious yard while chucking another log into the fire pit, this location is also ideally situated for day trips to some of the Upper Penninsula's most popular destinations, including Pictured Rocks National Lake Shore, Tahquemenon Falls, Castle Rock, Oswald's Bear Ranch, the shipwreck museum, lighthouses, and the quaint town of Newberry, to name a few. We couldn't help feeling we had the best of both worlds - although we were within walking distance of a convenience store/gas station that boasted everything from homemade dough nuts to basic produce, to firewood, to a full ice cream counter and deli, once we were near the lake, we thought we were miles from the rest of the world. While our children enjoyed following frogs along the shoreline and skipping stones, when they tired of outdoor play or had exhausted themselves playing in the nearby waterfalls, they could take a break in the beautifully furnished living room and find a favorite show on demand. My husband and I were delighted with the wi-fi so that we could catch up on work. When we were ready to unplug, we could read in our king sized bed and have the option to either shut out the world, or watch the night fall on the lake from the sliding door in our bedroom. Since this rental sleeps at least 8 with lots of space and privacy, we can't wait to return for another visit and invite a few friends! This space made for a vacation to treasure!

If you're looking for a destination that would grace the covers of travel magazines, well, travel…read moreon. But if a quiet, clean, no-frills cottage retreat sounds like a good vacation base camp, you can do a lot worse than Woods. Michigan has a lot of small, older rental cabin resorts and these vary widely in the level of maintainence they receive. Woods stands up very well among these. The interior is spartan but clean and doesn't show a lot of obvious wear and tear. The bathroom was clean, though quite small. The hot water supply was a bit limited--after one of us showered, it took quite a while before there was enough for the other. There wasn't much counter space in the kitchen area, and the gas stove had basically two settings--full blast and slightly less than full blast. Not a great problem if all you need to do is heat something up, but if you need to simmer something for a while or pan fry anything, there's a high risk you'll scorch it. All that said, the inconveniences we encountered in the cabin certainly didn't put a damper on the trip. It was a satisfactory place to sleep, eat, and wash. And the view of Lake Superior out the window and direct access to the beach compensated for any shortcomings at Woods. There was a stairway directly behind our cabin leading down to a boardwalk over a marshy area between the cabins and the beach. It took about five minute to walk to the water, but the walk itself was pleasant. The beach is open to the public, but was far less crowded than the beaches right in Grand Marais. So, I'll give three stars for the cabin itself, five for the view and general setting, for a four-star overall rating.
