We stopped in on our way to Helen GA for Oktoberfest. We have been coming to Pappy's for many years, primarily for the restaurant that served fried trout and catfish. Unfortunately the restaurant is now closed. A couple of years ago it was severely flooded. The entire operation sits feet away from the river and the restaurant did not reopen. There are many other buildings that make up the trading post, mostly antiques. My wife bought several pieces at really good prices. There are also buildings for ice cream and fudge. We walked around for about an hour.......we were the only shoppers there. Overall, it was fun as always. Really miss the restaurant. We will check back next tine to see if another one moves into the vacant spot.

A nice place to take a break from the road.

As a family, we have done guided, self guided, and tandem kayaks. If you do the kayaks, I encourage you to get the wetsuits - even in July. Fast Rivers is a family owned business that really cares about your experience. Their guides are well trained and watch out for everyone on the river. They are super friendly and most importantly, experienced. On our last trip down the Nantahala, my husband went with my son in a two person kayak. He is not as experienced on rivers as me, but has done a few. He was thrown and was having a very hard time getting back into the boat and reoriented. One of the guides stopped his trip and took care of my husband and 12 year old. He talked him through the whole process and handled the whole situation perfectly. Again, can't say enough good things about Fast Rivers. Only suggestion- manually put their address in GPS. The old location showed up when I automatically clicked on an old link making us slightly late. The business is very close to where the rafts are put in on the Nantahala and on the other end of the river run from NOC.

They assisted the students with their life savers. They took their time explaining what to do and not to do while rafting and carrying the raft to the river. The students were excited to get here and go to the river. Now I am not the one to go on the river but the kids said it was EPIC!!! When you are in the area, check them out you will not be disappointed.

Best tubing- cool, clean waters, great food, wonderful environment (peaceful, clean, and so much…read morefun).

We chose this tubing company because it was the closest place to where we were staying. Check-in…read morewas easy, the staff was friendly at first, we signed our waivers, and they even helped us inflate our tubes and it was only $10 with our own tubes. Summer let us feel the water and said, "This is as cold as it's going to get unless it rains and it will warm up the water." At no point did anyone tell us the creek was to low for tubing or that bringing our own tubes would be a problem. We were taken by the bus to the drop-off point and given no instructions except walk down the path. We asked if we needed a stick because the lady at check in said we needed one to push off the sides and he said, "Most definitely," so we each took one. Once we got in the creek, we quickly realized the water level was far too low. More than half of the trip was spent getting out of our tubes because our bottoms were scraping rocks or we were completely stuck. All four of us ended up with minor injuries from constantly walking through the rocky creek and dragging our tubes and falling on slippery rocks. The trip was supposed to take about an hour and a half, but it took us over three hours because the water was so shallow you could not float down it. When we returned, I spoke with the owner, June, hoping for some understanding, compassion or a partial refund since the conditions made the trip unsafe and unenjoyable. Instead, she seemed surprised we were unhappy and acted as though it was our fault. She claimed we had been told the water was low and it would be rough before we started, which simply isn't true. She brought over Summer who checked us in, and she also claimed she had warned us, but what she actually said was that the water was "as cold as it was going to get"--not that it was too shallow to tube. June also suggested the problem was because we brought our own tubes. That doesn't make sense, especially since an employee helped inflate them without saying they weren't appropriate. We also watched people using the company's tubes behind us, and they had to get out and carry their tubes through the same shallow sections. This clearly wasn't an issue with our equipment--it was an issue with the creek conditions. I also asked June if she had been on the creek and she said no. That seems crazy that the owner has not been down the creek. To make matters worse, the employee who had helped inflate our tubes and later drove the bus tried to dismiss our concerns by saying, "Have you ever been to Georgia? It's way worse." That was completely beside the point--we weren't in Georgia, and our experience was with this company. Then, because we voiced our concerns, he told us, "Well, if you're going to cause so much commotion, you don't ever have to bring your ass back here." I responded, "Don't worry, we won't." We've gone tubing many times at other locations and have never experienced anything like this. If the water was too low for a safe and enjoyable trip, they should have been honest about the conditions and not sent customers out. It wasn't worth spending three hours dragging tubes over rocks and leaving with injuries. The creek conditions were dangerous, but the way management and staff handled legitimate customer concerns was even worse. We definitely won't be returning and I definitely would recommend no one else does.

I appreciated their honesty because I'd had a terrible experience tubing previously. They recommended Wildwood Outfitters as an option to do something else, farther down the river where it's deeper and potentially more calm. It's crazy how much the water conditions can change from day to day! Chris greeted us at Wildwood Outfitters. He was so nice and knowledgeable. He discouraged us from kayaking - none of us were familiar with this river, although we had been kayaking before, and most of the sections where they take folks are Class 3+ rapids. Again, due to my past trauma, I thought it was best to take his advice, even though we were disappointed. Just as we were about to leave, he ran back out, and asked if we might be interested in rafting instead. He explained how it would work for the three of us and which section of the river would be best (Section 2, mostly flat or Class 1 rapids with only one area of Class 2 rapids), so we decided to take a chance. It cost about $100, so about $30 pp, with no particular time restrictions. Before we left, Chris took the time to explain how to navigate the rapids, what to expect every step of the way, and what to do if you fall out of the raft. We got helmets and life jackets, as well as a bag to keep our things dry. Although largely unsupervised, we were able to leave our keys in the outpost. They dropped us off and helped us carry the raft down to the embarkation point. I would have been terrified no matter what, but I felt well prepared. The river conditions were exactly as described and Chris's advice was spot on. He'd told us where to call from the raft when we were ready to be picked up, and we were so happy to see his smiling face (and his adorable dog) at the shore. Apparently the rafts hadn't been used in some time, and although they were properly inflated and maintained, there had been a small leak causing the raft to deflate and take on a lot of water. Thankfully they'd given us a bucket to bail the water out, but I basically spent the entire time bailing (giving me a good excuse not to have to paddle, though!). Chris felt terrible. He immediately offered us our money back, or anything else he could do to compensate us. We still had a great time and everyone was safe and dry at the end so we didn't feel that a refund was necessary. We ended up grabbing a couple of cold drinks and some t-shirts and called it even. The outpost was well-equipped with a portopotty, a changing area, and a shower. If you have your own kayak/raft you can hire them just to take you to your selected section. The prices are very reasonable. I would 100% recommend this business and will even think about doing it again!
