Went to Pappys for lunch and it was amazing! Lindsey our server was fantastic! My glass was always full. Our food came out hot and exactly as we ordered. The pulled pork was succulent. The side are always a hit and the cornbread is to die for. We live in Terre Haute but drive to pappys for the best barbecue in our area. My wife was going to meet some friends at Pappy's. I was working late so she volunteered to get me a carryout order. She figured I'd want my favorite--the big slab of meatloaf with Texas toast. Nope...no meatloaf...not this time. Her timing was perfect as I've seen advertised and heard from reliable sources about the famous "Big Al" from Pappy's. I made my request. She immediately agreed that it had to be tried. The Big Al isn't just a heaping mound of pork. It's a heaping mound of pork on Texas toast with just the right ratio of a sweeter sauce and.....here it comes....a big clump of Mac and cheese!!! It was like a modern day Dagwood with pork, Mac and cheese and sauce. WOW!! I have a sweet tooth. I like a bit of salty with the sweetness. But the creamy Mac and cheese with the perfectly chewy (al dente?) pasta made this sandwich a hit. The sandwich, along with their perfectly crisped French fries were a great combo. It was a HUGE portion and definitely required some to be held back for leftover lunch. Here's what makes the sandwich even better: this was designed by a local teen and his wishes were for some of the profits from the sandwich to go back towards a worthy organization. I'm intentionally leaving some information out so those who don't know will go and discover the rest of the story on your own. Get out of the house and head to 111 E. National ASAP. Pappy's looks and tastes the part of a good BBQ spot! I stopped here for a quick, take-out lunch and enjoyed it. I opted for the pulled pork sandwich, spicy sauce (comes on the side) and the cheesy taters. Honestly, cheesy taters were the star of the show; they were creamy, full of flavor, and the potatoes hadn't been overcooked to mush. The pulled pork was good. There's plenty of seating inside. You enter in through what I'm assuming is their overfill seating area, so it might leave you feeling confused as you enter an empty restaurant. Décor is basic with a bit of local flavor. Hidden gem this place is! Lucked up spotting this location when looking for a place to eat in the small town of Brazil. When I walked in I was quickly greeted and sat with my two colleagues. The server is someone that takes her job seriously. She was extremely attentive, she walked us through the menu pointing out her favs without us asking even letting us know how to make the standard better with slight modifications. This is our second time at pappys but the first time we went was three years ago. We thought this was a MUCH better experience. We thought their menu was updated and had A LOT of things we wanted to try. We had a sampler platter where we got to try jalepeno poppers, fried pickles, chicken tenders and burnt ends. The Jalapeño Poppers and Burnt Ends were 10/10 and a must try. The fried pickles were spears and I prefer chips. The chicken tenders were your basic chicken tender but good. For dinner we got the meatloaf, sloppy Sow (pulled pork with Mac and Cheese), and brisket grilled cheese. We liked all of these. The Meatloaf was very special and was the favorite at the table. It also came with two sides. The brisket on the grilled cheese was VERY tender and easy to bite. I wish the pulled pork had more juice on it but it was also good! We were actually surprised at how much we liked Pappy's and how busy they were in downtown Brazil. We stopped on a whim on a weeknight and they were out of most meats and sides - but that's on us. What we did have, we really enjoyed! We didn't care much for the sides that were left, but they were running out of stuff as we were ordering and we had to keep changing to less and less desirable options. Just passing through an unfamiliar town around lunchtime, I stopped at Pappy's on a whim. What a great surprise! Pappy's gives you a no-frills, down home experience with delicious, authentic barbecue. The pulled chicken was smokey and moist, and the baked beans rich with lots of big bacon chunks. Cornbread is one of my must-haves, and I was excited to see their dessert options. Sadly, the brown sugar cornbread was a letdown for me. This dish would have been amazing with something like coffee cake crumble topping. But the mountain of pure brown sugar was just overpoweringly sweet -- way too much! After I scraped off all the sugar, the cornbread itself was delicious. And the portion was very generous. The service was very friendly and fast. I was seated immediately and was in and out within less than an hour. Overall a great experience and I'd definitely return if I'm in the area again. read more

Jan. 9, 2024 went to Pappy's for lunch today. It was bad. The fries I got with my smash burger were cold, the smash burger comes with onions and pickles, there was maybe 1/8 tsp. of diced onion on the burger, and the bun was stale. My friend got the brisket, mac n cheese, and cheesy potatoes. His brisket was cold, and fatty, the mac n cheese was cold and tasteless, and the potatoes were swimming in a diluted cheese sauce, also cold. Big waste of money. Never again. Great spot for family lunch after a soccer game. In an old building so has painted peressed tin ceiling. Cute decor without being too cutesy. Service was pretty good for a small staff, and we didn't have to wait long on refills. All food was outstanding. Ribs, pulled chicken, pulled pork, beef brisket, fries, corn, potato salad, Texas toast. All very good. The meat is so good and the sides are just what you want to go with the meats. Took my dad for his 91 birthday and a family friend with my family. All of us enjoyed our meals. Two had loaded baked potatoes, two had Tri barn yard. And one had chicken tenders. Sides were baked beans , fried apples, coleslaw,chilli and corn bread so we had a little of everything. As we were in there around 2pm the service was very fast. When a lot of people can get a it backed up but still quick. Looks like a old time BQ down south. Have tables and booths, four different kinds of sauces on the tables. Paper towels on a welded together piles. Just a layer back kind of place with good food. read more

Nice little bbq joint in Brazil. Wait staff is very friendly and quick with refills. We had the sampler platter that included pulled chicken, pork and brisket. The brisket was just alright, not as tender as it should of been, needed a knife to cut thru it. I didn't care for the white chicken but the dark was better. The pulled pork was delicious. First, if this review implies that I live in San Francisco, CA, I assure you I live locally and visited Pappy's in Brazil last night (August 3, 2024). I will never go back to Pappy's. I can't say anything positive other than what little pulled pork I got actually tasted good. We arrived probably about prime supper time (5:30ish), and they were busy, frazzled really. People dropped things very loudly a couple times before we were seated. They put us in the east half where there are tall windows with no window coverings whatsoever. If you are facing the windows, you can't see the face of the person you're sitting across from. They are in complete shadow. I ordered the pulled pork mac and cheese skillet ($9.99). My husband got the large pulled pork dinner ($13.99). Once we got our food, our waitress did not come back once to check on us. Not once. The size of the mac and cheese skillet is ridiculously small. When questioned, the "front manager"? (not the restaurant manager, although I asked for the owner or the manager) said they put 4 or 5 ounces of pork on it. Maybe 4 and that's pushing it. You could easily make a small fist and hold it all. Maybe a cup of mac and cheese? It had no cheesy flavor at all. A runny, tasteless cream sauce. Maybe if I had salted the heck out of it, it might have tasted like something. So, with probably a 6" skillet, I finished my meal before my husband was a third of the way through his, and I'm usually the last one done. He gave me his Texas toast-- also, flavorless. No seasonings on it, just a smear of butter. Plain, tough, chewy toast. About the time my husband finishes his meal, our waitress finally notices I've been watching her. She asks if we want anything else. Yes, the owner or the manager. Here's the bottom line-- they took the price of the skillet off the bill, offered me another tasteless skillet, interrupted me several times, and made empty excuses. I couldn't even have my say because they just wanted to make excuses. The original waitress brought over the revised bill. When I handed her my credit card, she rudely swiped it out of my hand. I'm sorry you're a terrible waitress. I'm sorry you think I'm an awful person. I'm really just a paying customer with average expectations, and you have no clue how to treat me. When I tried one more time to tell her that she didn't even come back once to check on us, out came the attitude. No apologies, mind you. At least the "front manager" did apologize, and offered me more bland, tasteless food. No thanks. So, this is why I will never go back to Pappy's. Thank you for reading this. While Pappy's BBQ isn't the only restaurant in the small city of Brazil, Indiana, it's definitely one of the very few options for those looking for a night out and not wanting to head over to Terre Haute. Located on the main strip in Brazil, Pappy's was highly recommended to me by one of my road support volunteers during a recent fundraising event that had me spending a night and most of a day in Brazil. Pappy's opened up in the area in 2007, a longtime dream for a guy whose grandchildren called him "Pappy." Thus, Pappy's BBQ was born. I'm tempted to say that Pappy's is located in a strip center, though a rural "strip center" is vastly different from the strip centers of a place like Indianapolis. Offering dine-in, carry-out and catering options, Pappy's is a meat-centric dining establishment with not much of anything that would truly please a vegetarian or vegan diner. What do you really expect from a place with BBQ in its name? Pappy's focuses on the four food groups - ribs, pork, brisket and chicken. They offer both dinner and sandwich options, though all their options are surprisingly reasonable in their pricing. They also offer appetizers, desserts and one, count 'em one, salad option (and even it includes chicken). Have I mentioned that vegetarians shouldn't go here? Sandwiches are served on your choice of Texas Toast or bun with one side (and several options are available). Dinners, on the other hand, are a couple bucks higher than sandwiches but include larger portions and two sides. I opted for a meatloaf sandwich on Texas Toast with fries along with, you guessed it, my usual unsweetened iced tea. Y'all are going to freak out if I ever order a drink other than iced tea, aren't you? It appears that Pappy's has one larger, open concept dining room and one narrower one that accompanies the restaurant's wheelchair accessible entrance. They were modestly busy upon my arrival, but we easily were seated at an appropriately accessible table. As Brazil is an older town, there are businesses along the strip that aren't wheelchair friendly but Pappy's is easily workable. It's also worth noting that Brazil has only recently upgraded their sidewalks to ensure that curb cuts meet ADA requirements - don't ask them in town why it took so long. It's not a popular subject. My sandwich with side came in at $6.99 plus drink. For the meal served, it's a definite value. The sandwich was thick, I mean super thick, and I actually ended up eating most of it with a fork and knife because it was such a beast of a sandwich. It was incredibly tasty and the fries complemented the meal quite nicely with a seasoning that made them unique from your typical fast food style fries. Refills were offered on drinks including one to go. The atmosphere was comfortable and casual, though not divey. I did get the feeling that folks were wondering just a bit about these outsiders, though that may very well have been my own paranoia. Pappy's wasn't the best meatloaf I've ever had, but it was mighty tasty and I would definitely order it again. I was definitely full by meal's end and rather grateful that I'd already done my long-distance wheeling for the day. I went there recently. I have eaten there many, many times with no real complaints. Walked in and was shocked. Totally the nee owners totally changed the place....and imo not at all for the good.seem odd to fix something that has never been broken. I guess the new owners don't like multiple tables full of hungry families and friends in the front area night after night. That's their right. We recently visited Pappy's for lunch. I ordered the Hawaiian pulled pork sandwich and my friend ordered a loaded baked potato with pulled pork. I was given a choice of Texas style bread fir my sandwich or a bun so I chose the Texas bread. We asked about rib tips but they didn't have any. The ribs showed market price on the menu so that seemed a hassle and that's why we chose the pulled pork. The food came quickly however I was disappointed in the sandwich. The bread was very soggy and fell apart as I was trying to take a bite. I finally just took the meat off the bread. The pineapple was just a canned type of crushed pineapple laying on top of the pork. The potato was good and hot. My friend enjoyed her potato. It didn't look like it had much meat on it and the cheese was put on top of the butter amd sour cream so it didn't melt well. This place has so much potential but each time I visit it just hits the mark in one form or the other. I would have loved the pineapple grilled with sauce. The meat should have been strained so as not to wet the bread. Rib tips should be a staple and ribs should have a price on them, after all pork in this area is inexpensive. I would have liked a bigger portion of the pork on my sandwich amd on my friends potato. If I need to pay more , so be it. I wasn't impressed with this place and wouldn't go far out of my way to return. read more

This place is amazing beyond compare. Never thought a place like Brazil, IN would have a gem of a place like this. The brisket is heavenly. Melt in your mouth amazing and you can see the smoke ring as you know it was smoked for hours. The pulled pork is 2nd to none. Moist, tender, and oh so delicious. The chicken or pork nachos are a wonderful appetizer or as a meal. Trust me, they are amazing. Their chicken wings are both meaty and packed with a nice smoke flavor that is sure to please. The bbq sauce they have on the table (both sweet and spicy) accent the wings perfectly. Service was perfect. Ask for the server, Thor. He is a young kid but is engaging with you and cracks a few jokes. He was on his A Game and nobody was without drinks/refills for longer than a few seconds and he had 10 people to wait on! I had a baked potato and baked beans for my sides and both were fantastic. The baked beans had bacon in them and you could tell they were a labor of life. Not canned or store bought. The baked potato was cooked to perfection and not even the skin remained after I consumed it! I know a baked potato is great when I can eat the skin too. The prices are reasonable and the portions are rightly-sized. The atmosphere in the restaurant is very kid friendly, rustic, and cozy. I will be going back time and time again. read more

Was seated right away and waited over 15 minutes and no one even took a drink order. Just stopped in at pappys BBQ and was overall satisfied for a small scale resteraunt. I had the briskette and the pulled pork. Serving size was average I didn't leave hungry but wasn't heaped up either. Briskette was good and tender and the pulled pork was my best treat. All sides where good also. Ribs received were bare....not a bit of sauce on them, they included one of the small plastic cups of sauce...enough for about 3 ribs. Stopped by this "Mom and pop" on way through town on Wednesday at lunchtime. There was a decent size crowd of customers but there were plenty of empty tables. The menu was very concise with just enough options for a barbecue restaurant. The staff was friendly, the sweet tea was brewed, and the food was good. If I had anything to complain about it would be the service. It was brutally slow. So slow I gave up on waiting for my bill and left ample cash to cover all food, drink and lackluster waitstaff. Would make me not want to be there on a weekend. I'll return and give them the second chance to make me a regular when traveling through town. read more
