Heavenly bun ... Savory durian gelato ..
    Herman H.

Delicious coffee-crusted buns with a side of gelato?! YES PLEASE!!!! Went here 3 times during my stay in Brisbane, I really just couldn't stay away .. If anyone has had a pineapple bun, imagine that but the crusty part is coffee flavored and the bun has a buttery center. On of the best buns I have ever had!! Twice I got it straight out of the oven, though it is just as good cold! They make it right in front of you, and takes a whole lot of patience to spiral the coffee cream stuff on top before putting it in the oven. It is 2.50 AUD for just the bun and 4.50 AUD with a side of gelato. All three times I got a side of gelato. I got durian, berry, and taro. The durian was the best!! They also offer condensed milk as a side, which honestly compliments the bun the best!! Really great place to grab dessert after a meal and chat it up!

    Super delicious coffee bun

50 AUD ( I normally get the bun by itself) and the bun with add ons (gelato or condensed milk) are 4.

The Eight Mile Plain Sakuraya is exclusively a dessert/ drinks bar and a popular one at that. Even though it only opened last year, this shop has a faithful following lounging around in the indoor/ outdoor dining area, sipping drinks, munching on those glutinous Japanese rice balls and just people watching in general. They do the usual assortment of pearl milk teas and fruity green/black teas. When I went last weekend, I wanted to try something a little different so the waitress recommended a Winter Melon Yoghurt drink. This was perfect for the hot weather but I would only recommend it if you enjoy drinks with a distinct sour sweetness such as Yakult. They also stock a range of gelati that I've never heard of called Norgen Vaaz though I'm willing to give it a go if it is as tasty as their drinks range.

Does service even exist here?…read more I usually don't like to give bad reviews, but Pancake Manor definitely needs improvement. I came to Pancake Manor with a friend after needing to satisfy a long craving for some pancakes. The food is generally quite delicious, and the sides go well; however, the service leaves a lot to desire. We sat down and looked at the menu to make our choices. When we decided what we were going to order and the respective sides we wanted we struggled in getting anyone to come over and serve us. It wasn't a busy day, the restaurant only had about a third capacity, we weren't sitting in an ambiguous spot (right across from the main drinks area), nor was there a lack of staff. Staff just couldn't notice us. Staff would walk by and my friend would gesture for service but nothing happened. Eventually, we questioned whether table service existed and my friend then went to the payment counter to place an order. A staff member then came to take our order. The food came out quickly and, with the exception to the garlic bread (which wasn't as crisp as I hoped to to be), was delicious. Unfortunately, that is the only nice thing I can really say. The staff forgot our drinks order and I had to go up to the counter to remind them of our drinks. Furthermore, when we asked for water we were told we needed to get it ourselves (no problem with that). The person who I was with went to the places were glasses were kept to pour water but there was nothing there. We didn't raise anything to the store because we didn't want to make a fuss. Eventually after a good 15 minutes someone managed to notice that glasses were missing/yet to be cleaned and replaced the supply. The next problem was that after filling one glass there wasn't enough water.... After that, we didn't need anymore "service" and the meal was okay. It's a shame that what could have been a lovely meal could easily be spoiled by the poor service. I might visit again, but I won't hold expectations too high for now.

I don't know if it's worth getting excited over, as my last experience here wasn't all that great... but it is the only place around open till late! I had the waffles with ice cream last time, and was not at all impressed. What they call Belgian waffles are a very thin waffle of inferior texture - and the blueberries I had with them were quite disappointing. I also had the basket of chips (5.5) last time, which was decent, but not great, as they weren't crispy on the outside, and a bit soggy on the inside. This time around, I was craving something salty, so I decided on the hash browns (6.5). They were burnt on both sides - which is usually a sign of a nice crunchy texture - but in this case, it meant an impressively hard to handle slab of potato. When I mean impressive, I mean it was hard to break apart, hard to pick up with a fork, and just unpleasant in general. I didn't know one could mess up hashed browns so terribly, but I suppose a place that opens 24 hours in Brisbane is one of a kind, and doesn't need to serve good food...

Yet it's not Cold Rock. It's not even some cheap owner refusing to pay the franchising fee on a Cold Rock shop. Marble Slab Creamery is an international chain and Garden City is its first Brisbane-based franchise. I know gelati is kicking ice-cream's butt at the moment in the popularity arena but perhaps that's why I've made a return to it. I've always supported the underdog even if it means an extra couple of kilos to my thighs. Despite being a completely different franchise, the concept is basically the same as Cold Rock. Pick a flavour of ice-cream and some mix-ins. Watch the puny shop assistant struggle to get a decent sized scoop and then mix everything up on a cold marble slab. Pay for ice-cream. Run far away from the mall rats and enjoy ice-cream in peace. It's impossible to recommend a flavour as there are a million combinations to be had. The other night, I had the Caramel peanut butter crisp - sweet cream ice cream with crushed butter finger, chocolate chips and caramel. D'lish! Marble Slab Ice Creamery definitely has better quality ice-cream than Cold Rock. If you want something a little different there's always the ice-cream pizza. Personally I'm not game but I'd love to hear all about it if any fellow yelpers are.

For those of you who have never had any of these before, imagine a thick pikelet sandwich with your choice of filling inside. I recommend the custard filled one, the green tea filled one, the chocolate one, the brioche like twists aren't the best, but you should try them anyway. You could easily snack on 3-4 they are so small. The one with peanuts is nice too... they have a million options to choose from so go crazy! I like the taro, red bean or green tea although they do have more adventurous flavours such as coconut and corn. One pancake cost less than $1 and is the perfect afternoon snack. Personally, I think the price is a little cheap given they are actually pretty filling and tasty to boot.
