We avoided the chocolate fountain as kids like to dip their fingers in it. Has a noisy atmosphere but that was no problem for us. There is no buffet and you order the dishes you want from the menu. The starters and duck are top quality and very plentiful. You then order your main courses which again are very good quality. Don't be put off by the £13.95 (I think!) all you can eat service. It isn't the usual help yourself buffet spooning food that has spent hours in chafing dishes. Instead, you order from an extensive a la carte menu, all the usual dishes you would expect in a Chinese plus some specials. I particularly like the sizzling dish Steak in a pungent sauce. Wonderful description and food! The food is high quality and freshly cooked to order. Clean linen tablecloths, chopsticks and bowls supplied if requested. Service is friendly and informal. Wash the food down with their wonderfully dark Syrah Rosé. I'm sure London has better Chinese restaurants but I haven't been to a better one in this price range in Kent yet.

We were to meet…read moreour friends at 19:20 for a 19:30 meal, when booking the table my wife had been informed that they were very busy due to Christmas party bookings. As my wife and I live in Thorpe we arrived early before our friends expecting to wait for them in the bar area, however we were ushered directly to our seats as one of the party groups were all ready in the bar, we felt uncomfortable being seated at the table without our friends. This however, was the only downside of the evening, the food was excellent, the service was friendly albeit a liittle slow, the deserts were a little on the small side but when we jokingly pointed this out to the staff a free additional desert appeared. I always find chinese menus difficult, not knowing what to choose so I normally go for a set meal which I did on this ocassion, the set meals start from £18 each with a minimum of two ordering. All in all an excellent meal and I would recommend the Chinese Cottage to anyone, try it, you want be dissapointed.

The food is still quite good but if you like to eat late then you will be unlucky as we have been advised when trying to book a table for say 9pm that the Chef wants to go home by 10.00. The toilets are quite unacceptable, the gents has a very low pressure of water at the basin which results in a trickle of cold (no Hot) water barely enough to wash your hands, and the floor is more like going for a paddle! This I have experienced on more than one occasion. I addressed my concerns to the female manager, she responded with being too busy and not enough staff to clean. I tried to continue my conversation with her and she turned her back on me refusing to discuss the lack of basin water, let alone no hot running water or soap! Clearly there is a lack of proper management /front of house This restaurant is a heath hazard, it needs some investment in a complete makeover inside and outside, I don't even want to think about what the customer doesn't see in the kitchens etc! We will not be eating here again any time soon.

You have the option of ordering the meal you want, or you can order buffet style. But rather than going up with your plate to a buffet station, you order the buffet cooked fresh. They limit the amount you can order at a time (dependant on the number of people at the table) but you can always order again, it is all one price, and this prevents over-ordering and food being wasted! The food is always cooked fresh, lots of choice, absolutely lovely. It's been a while since we actually went to the restaurant, as having recently had a baby means we are not going out all that often! So we thought we'd try Beijing Inn's delivery service. So far we have not been disappointed. They are excellent on the phone, have delivered within the time they said every time so far. As you will have gleaned, I ate the food - I'm a hungry chap - but that doesn't mean that I enjoyed it! Having said that, I guess it is a good place to take hungry and non-discriminatory teenagers. It should keep them quiet for a few minutes and recahrge their energy cells for a couple of hours. Just don't expect to enjoy it yourself if you like good food.

Despite claiming to be a fusion of Japanese, Thai and Chinese cuisine I think it was 80% Japanese, as were the staff. The desserts were good too my chocolate volcano was wonderful, just like the choccy pudding my old mum used to make (a tad pricey though at £4.95). A few minor gripes: our plates were whipped away as soon as we put down our knives & forks. They weren't doing it to hurry us despite being Saturday night they weren't that busy; it was just the staff's enthusiasm but it made us a trifle uncomfortable. The menus were largely in dark type on a black background all but impossible to read in the subdued lighting. And the 10% added to the bill for service is a habit that I thought had died out. I prefer to decide for myself how much of a tip I want to leave, and make sure it goes to the right person.
