A perfect place to rest and recount our adventures for the day. There were quite a few diners in, and the space seemed a lot larger once inside, with a bar and several rooms to accommodate small and large parties. We were seated near a party of 10! Service was friendly and leisurely, which we welcomed. Only one staff was taking and distributing orders and he advised of the delay in service. The food was delicious and had we more time in town, would likely have dined in again.

This place is fantastic, easy walk from Dover Castle and just so happens to be Dovers oldest pub. The menu for lunch is small, feels like it's because they want to do things right. The fish and chips- highly recommend. However unless you are starving I recommend you split it with a friend. When we arrived we were immediately greeted, service was excellent. For families like us, they do have high chairs. They will take your order if you sit inside. There's also an outdoor garden however you need to come to the counter to order. Same with drinks. Each room has a lot of history. Take one look around and there's a lot going on. Apparently this location used to be a part of monastery and has evolved over the years now to a great pub. Each dish we enjoyed, the vegetarian linguine was fresh, chips were delicious and the fish was wonderful. If you're cruising in and need a place for a good meal not too far from the port or to Dover Castle- I recommend you swing on in. Highly casual so you can come as is or for special occasion.

The decor is minimal but not at all austere despite it being a large space, mostly because it's all wood and subtle colours. Real napkins on the tables! Along the whole length of one wall is an amazing wooden shelving unit / dresser with drawers. It was discovered out in the garage when the new people opened the restaurant and was made for the general stores which is what this building had been when it first opened. There are fantastic lamps on the walls - incandescent bulbs with gorgeous twisty filaments in metal cages. Lovely. Anyway, the menu was small but unusual. Once we had seen the menu we decided to have a little more than a croissant! I chose scrambled eggs with chives and cream; my partner had charred mackerel with pickled cherries. There was not a lot when it arrived but it was delicious and with a gorgeous creamy texture. It came with slices of soda bread toast, griddles with olive oil. The combination was delicious. My partner loved his fish, which looked not far off raw and loved the pickled cherries too. As this had been so good we decided to try the wonderfully named Dirty, filthy cheesecake! So named because they mix in another pungent cheese. Today it was stinking bishop! When it arrived as a small portion with currants and grapes and a red wine reduction it was delicious. Very firm and dense and with a definite taste of something pungent lurking in the background. Unusual. We decided to finish with a latte each and agreed afterwards that it was a top class cup of coffee. Service was very friendly, the cakes on the counter looked great, the cocktails sounded extra special and Dan is a bit of a cocktail whizz by all accounts. Also, the wine list was individual and had obviously been chosen thoughtfully. Sadly, as we still had our early morning hats on we didn't feel wine was appropriate ... We were very impressed and would have loved a return visit but due to the press of the weekend it didn't happen.

The lamb we had was tender and tasty, with a lovely salsa verde. The fishcake was fresh if a little light on salmon. My only gripe was the gnocchi which was fried and terrible really. The rest excellent, a lovely chocolate dessert. Also the soda bread with brown butter was superb. Great price at £15 for two courses. I'd love to come back and get stuck into the wine list which looked great. Very nice.

All around the table were pleased with their orders but I have to say that I was the winner when it came to ordering. I started with the Italian style antipasti which included an incredibly succulent bresoala cured by the chef himself. The starter was a rich, velvety langoustine bisque that was so sensational I had to let everyone at the table try it once but they weren't allowed a second sip! The main course of salt marsh lamb was succulent and served with perfectly cooked and seasoned vegetables. The quality of the ingredients was so clearly evident as is the chef's care and attention in cooking and plating up well-presented but unfussy and generous portions. We were all incredibly satisfied with the meal and an excellent bottle of wine. The service was friendly and welcoming and the pub itself feels like an undiscovered gem in the sleepy Kent countryside. Highly recommended on all fronts.

The restaurant is a lovely room with a great real open fire and lovely outlook over the churchyard. On our recent lunch here I had Mulligatawny soup to start which was delightfully spiced with fresh coriander, garlic and ginger flavour and not at all heavy, it came served with delicious home made bread. I followed this with cod fillet which came with a fish cake served on a lovely bed of kale and with what they describe as an old fashioned egg sauce, delicious. Unfortunately we didn't have time for pudding but they do delicious desserts, everything home made. Food is locally sourced and free range/organically grown so green, healthy as well as tasty. Great and friendly service. Prices are very reasonable.
