We just meandered on our own there wasn't an official tour guide but there was lots to see. The museum is a homage to Pieter Teyler van der Hulst, who was a wealthy cloth merchant and banker of Scottish descent, who bequeathed his fortune for the advancement of religion, art, and science. It was the center for enlightenment study and education.

You travel through various parts of the human body and receive an educational breakdown of that particular area while you stand in it: the mouth, heart, stomach, lungs, etc. The interactive aspect of the museum makes it much more interesting than your standard science museum. Getting to the museum isn't the easiest especially as someone who doesn't know a lick of Dutch. I tried taking the bus from Leiden Centraal, but the bus wasn't running consistently so I ended up having to do quite a bit of walking, but the museum itself was very enjoyable! I recommend it to anyone visiting the region. I was staying in Amsterdam, and it was well worth the trip to Leiden to visit Corpus.

I thought the place was rather small with not many exhibits. A lot of things would take up entire rooms all by themselves. The audio clicker gives you more background information for each of the areas. During my visit, there were pieces from Kehinde Wiley which initially confused me because it seemed so out of place, but honestly looked amazing in such a contrasting setting (historical house). You can go as quickly or slowly as you want at this museum, depending on your interest. I personally just liked walking through all the rooms and reading/listening to snippets that interested me (~45-60 minutes), but you can also do a more thorough visit. Overall, I had a good experience at Museum van Loon.

Then the collection: what is there not to like? The museum has several areas of specialty interests (glass v. statues v. objects) and they deliver lectures in the weekends. The changing exhibition has featured top pieces from Italy, and I am always learning something new when I visit. Plus the Museum Jaar Kaart is valid here. Since it's located in downtown Amsterdam I hop on the tram or hoof it down from Central Station. Wonderful institution!

Grab one of their free audio tours when you walk in to get all the details on what you're seeing while walking through!

Definitely plan to spend at least 2 to 3 hours here if you want to see both the permanent collection and the rotating exhibitions without rushing. One of the highlights for me was the cafe (Fonda/Sandberg). It has a beautiful, airy design with lots of natural light, making it the perfect spot to recharge with a coffee after walking through the galleries. The "bathtub" architecture is just as cool on the inside as it is on the outside!
