Cookies and sweet breads

I found out about La Vaconia on Gastro Obscura, which informed me that this is the oldest bakery in CDMX founded by immigrants from Basque Country in Spain. I second the review below me that says that La Vasconia is a bakery/restaurant on steroids. It really is. When you enter, you are immediately engulfed by rows and rows of picture-perfect pan dulce, other breads, and sweets. It never ends. All the breads/pastries are self-serve (you pick up a tray with tongs), which makes this experience a true test of self-control. The prices are extremely reasonable--we picked up a big palmier, concha, and ladyfingers for under 3 USD. They also have a sit-down restaurant and full-on rotisserie going on--we saw many locals having a quick lunch. Out of everything we got, I liked the concha the most--it reminds me of a Chinese bolo bao but softer and moister. Would highly recommend stopping here for a treat if you're by the Templo Mayor.

After a terrible dessert experience down the street we came here for a second chance at dessert and fell in love with the tres leche cake. There's a few different restaurants combined in the one space, and it does look run down, but the quality here was incredible.

This is the go to place for Tortas by La Villa..!!! Anytime…read moreI'm visiting Mexico City and go see La Virgin de Guadalupe at la Basilica I always make sure to stop at this Torta place... My cousin who lives in Mexico city was the first to introduce us to this place since we were younger and have always gone back... They are famously known for their Tortas being so big... The last time we went we were feeling brave and ordered Their speciality which is a 3lb Torta that pretty much has every meat and cheese they offer at the restaurant... The torta is so big we couldn't even eat half of it between 2 people... It was really good so if you want a Torta that has more than a Cubana you definitely need to try their speciality Torta just bring a huge appetite or help.. Lol I've also tried their regular smaller Tortas and they have all been really good... I have been coming here for years so everytime I come I try to order something different...The Al pastor Torta and Milanesa are my top favorite, They also have their version of a Cubana which is also pretty big... They also give you a side of jalapeños with your order so if you want more you can ask for extra... Overall this is hands down my favorite Torta place by La Villa, its a far walk so you would have to get an uber or taxi to get there... The staff is very friendly, helpful and they keep the place clean and sanitary... They have a place to sit down & eat, clean restrooms and amazing Tortas... Definitely a must try if you want to try so amazing local Tortas

You select what you want, pay, and then pick up your order. Their cookie selection is immense, and they sell them by the pound. I ordered two boxes at half a pound each. The cookies are delicious (think Whole Foods cookies, but better). For sweet bread, I only chose six pieces since they don't travel well on a plane, but wow... the quality was outstanding and the variety is incredible. Service is quick and cordial. The place itself is an old bakery with amazing lighting and original floors from the 1930s. If you're in CDMX, this is a must stop.

You're supposed to grab a tray and tongs then take what you want to the cashier. The place was so large that I didn't bother grabbing a tray because I just wanted to look at everything first. I ended up getting a corn muffin my friends grabbed a few things they didn't really know what they were, just grabbed what looked good. My corn muffin was ok., it was moist, dense, and had real pieces of corn in it. I tried some of my friend's raspberry baguette it was also pretty good. Dense baguette and tasty dried raspberry's and some nuts maybe walnuts? My other friend got some bread thing with sugar on top. It was a bit dry and not very buttery. I didn't care for that one. There was a whole gambit of baked goods to choose from, donuts, bread, cakes, pastries, even sandwiches. We tried asking what they were known for, no one seemed to know. So I guess there's no specialty. Prices were very reasonable around 15-22 pesos maybe some were more depending on what you chose. I found it to be a good Mexican bakery but not as refined as a French bakery. I guess you gotta find what's good and what you like. Unfortunately I didn't find that item yet.
