The AAC put up our archaeological field school for two summers and we couldn't have asked for better hosts. In addition to becoming our temporary lab, the AAC does a whole lot to support the Arivaca community and beyond. They even starting a crop circle to grow seeds of Native American crops that were destroyed by drought in 2012. They run a preschool and an exercise/pilates group. In the back, they have a room where a massage therapist has appointments. They have leased their space to artists and activists and more. They have two guest rooms they rent to visitors which are colorful, clean, and welcoming. And they're constantly thinking of ways to expand. Jill in particular has this phenomenal can-do, no-BS attitude that immediately puts me at ease and assures me that everything that needs to get done, will get done, and in the best way possible. This woman is so resourceful it's inspiring. If you need a place to stay while in Arivaca, definitely give them a go. And if you need to know ANYTHING at all about the area, ask. They know and passionately love this area inside and out.

The town was founded in 1878 and has been the home of a hardy, friendly group sense. In the past, accommodations were limited to campers. If you're like me, the thought of sharing a sleeping bag with the local "critters" or sharing a bathroom at an rv park isn't the most appealing way to spend vacation. I'll admit it, I'm a wimp. My idea of roughing it is no HBO. As you can imagine, I was thrilled to learn that there's a nice place to lay your head with comfy beds, fresh linens and free Wi-Fi. There's no TV, but I was happy to trade it for wonderful companions and a beautiful view. The Arivaca Action Center has two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. The rooms are tastefully appointed and feature beautiful antique furnishings. Guests can hide in their rooms or enjoy the shared kitchen and living room with locals and visitors. While we were there we got to know an incredible group of graduate students who worked in the desert all day then came to the action center to make dinner, watch movies and hang out on the large front porch during the evening. Once they headed to their camp, the entire place was ours - plenty of couch space to lounge on and a nice, bug table for eating or doing some work. Jill, who runs the center is a lovely, generous woman who makes guests feel like extended family. If you're looking to get away from it all, treat yourself to some time in this remote, wonderful town and enjoy a great stay at the Action Center.

We were the only guest at the time and the quiet was wonderful. The space was clean; the bed was very comfortable; there was full bath and kitchen (fridge had trouble keeping things cold, never got above 45 degrees so take a good ice chest). The kitchen amenities were perfect for making breakfast and a couple of dinners during our 5 night stay. It was nice to have access to a TV but they do need to replace the swivel head which is broken and the TV is at a 45 degree downward angle. We propped it up with a roll of paper towels!! It worked. The outdoor space around the koi pond is so tranquil and pleasant that my husband and I hung out in our PJ and had coffee every morning. At night it was a great place to take in the stunning night skies. If you time it right you get ti watch Karen feed the giant koi Karen was very good at guiding us to the wineries and I can't thank her enough for recommending the Sonoita winery whose MeCaSah wine is truly an award winner. We also went the Vera Earl Beef which sell aged beef..so good. Also of note is the Copper Brothel Brewery where I had the best chicarrones ever and I don't want to leave out The Corner Scoop for the best breakfast burritos. All in all it was so enjoyable and hope to return.

The house is historic, beautiful and comfortable, perfect for nature lovers. If you're a birder, this is definitely a place that should be on your short list. Mary Jane and Tom are great hosts, who make you feel welcome and comfortable, like staying with family. Longtime residents/innkeepers Tom & Mary Jane are warm, hospitable, knowledable, discreet hosts, happy to chat if you want to and tell you all the local lore, also happy to give you space. Tom is an excellent gourmet chef & each breakfast is different. The main house is cozy adobe with a huge stone fireplace. Beds are comfortable w/good mattress. There's a mini fridge to store food and a microwave and 'common area' with hot coffee & a great selection of teas. The flagstone patio is excellent for dreaming, bird-watching, (it's a hot birdwatching place w/great biodiversity & right on some bird migration paths), star-gazing, and watching the sun go down with a glass of wine. The property lies off a dirt road, with excellent hiking, biking, and running trails and streams (at least in spring) so feels quite remote, but it's also about 3 miles from the little town of Patagonia. This is perfect for a couples getaway (there are two free-standing casitas plus a main lodge) but also for families and it's dog-friendly. They have a donkey and a horse who love snacks and an excellent library of books to read. It also seems to draw like-minded souls as the other guests we met over our 3-day stay were lovely, respectful, quiet, and as grateful and amazed as we were to have found this charmed hideway.

Each night people gather for happy hour in the cantina. It is an honor system and perhaps people took advantage with healthy pours but so what? We brought beer and wine and drank them mostly. I love that it is a single-story motel, meaning you don't have to listen to the neighbors walking above you all night. Also, they have gone out of their way to make things kitschy, artsy, and cool. There is art everywhere, including fun little treats like chalk and chalkboards in the room. The rooms are functional but not fancy. There isn't carpet (a benefit in my opinion), the shower is small, but has excellent pressure. I will say the beds are incredibly comfortable. Everything was clean. We had a small (retro-style of course) fridge in the room. And even though there was just a window unit, our room maintained a comfortable temperature. (Although it wasn't that hot. I am not sure how it would be in the summer.) I do love that they only have keypads, no actual keys, which made it really convenient to go in and out. There is also a little bistro set by the front door, which is delightful for sipping coffee (or eating your free oatmeal) in the morning. The common areas are fun, decorated with a lot of cool art and old school kitsch. The pool is heated saltwater, which is good for the cooler months, but kind of a bummer in the hotter months (aka most of the year) because it was only April but the pool felt like bathwater. You can't bring your own drinks to the pool area, but they have a lot of drinks for sale in the lobby (beer, wine, cider, no hard liquor), and the prices are quite reasonable. And the oatmeal bar in the morning is tons of fun. Service is slightly hit or miss. Some of the employees were amazing (shout out to Alex!), but some kind of felt like they were going through the motions. All in all, this is a good value motel, and I would stay there again.
