Came to Nogales last Saturday was recommended to come here by one of the locals. They had plenty of customers and we were the only tourists (nice), I knew we were in for a treat. It's a hotel, you go in through the main entrance, go through the lobby, make a right and there is the restaurant. It was very nice and clean inside definitely more upscale than the average restaurant in Nogales. We ordered chips and guacamole while we waited for our meals other than that I have no idea what we ordered but everything was delicious and so much food. Our waiter was really friendly, hardly spoke any English but made our experience very pleasant. Total bill came close to $28 which included two meals, chips & guacamole and tea (reminder - lots of food). So glad we were recommended to come here and will definitely be back next visit....maybe stay the night so we don't have to wait two hours to cross the boarder.

We stayed one night last weekend. Retro, yet elegant charm. Our room was impeccable. The service was excellent, including old school elevator valet! Only very minor peeve is no blow dryer or iron in room. We've had meals at the restaurant many times and they never disappoint. The food is always superbly made as the waiters super friendly. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for affordable and pleasant accommodations in the heart of Nogales, Sonora. This is a city icon.

Their amazing French toast. A must have for breakfast!

I've stayed at this hotel occasionally for about 30 years. It was a Super 8 for years and the last…read moretime I stayed under the current name was in 2018. Checking in may data was still in their system. Check in was typical and the rack rate was $80. I was put in the rooms facing the parking lot, which was convenient for me. Some complain of freeway noise or early morning departures of other guests but it's never bothered me. If you are staying more time or want more quiet, request a room facing the inside courtyard, pool area. If you have trouble with stair, make them aware of that fact so you can be given a room on the parking lot level. The room was clean. Why just three stars? It's just old and dated inside. The blackout curtains did close enough to shut out the 5:30 AM sun. The mattress was passable, the sheets and towels of lower quality. The old furniture that held the big tube TV was still there and empty, a small screen TV mounted to the wall above it. Temperature was not an issue. In fairness to the future, I noticed a big dumpster and many room being remodeled. As of May 2022, they were working through the hotel a section of room at a time. God willing, I'll have an updated review sometime in the future.

This has got to be the worst hotel I've ever been to! While the hotel staff was helpful when I…read morechecked in, I got to my room and it smelled like someone smoked a dozen packs of cigarettes. I went down to change rooms. They told me that they are a non smoking hotel, and I said, I'm sorry, you might be, but someone was smoking in that room. So they did give me another room but let me tell you about the rooms... they are old, the carpet is ripped, the tile is broken, the plugs were missing in the walls--I was shocked but because I had planned on catching a feral cat and bring it back, I decided to stay one night (even though I paid for two). I came back after visiting with friends and went to take a shower. The shower took almost 10 minutes to get lukewarm, but I took a quick one. When getting out of the shower, someone banged on my door. I called out, saying the room was occupied, but this person proceeded to try to bust open the door! Thank God there was a latch that they couldn't break through or they would have busted the door!! I yelled at them to leave and then proceeded to throw my clothes on and go down and get the heck out of that hotel! Not only did I not stay either night, they wouldn't refund me my stay. I told them I'd pay for the first night, but not the second and certainly not the pet fee, as I never brought the cat there. Because I prepaid, I couldn't get anything back, so lesson learned. They have a nice restaurant attached to this hotel so I was shocked to see what a horrible, nasty place this was, one that is NOT SAFE to stay at! I would NEVER recommend this hotel to anyone!! For the record, I normally don't leave bad reviews but I feel that people need to beware of this place!!

I go to Nogales, Sonora maybe four times a year. I always stay at this hotel. It is the old and…read moresomewhat classic hotel on the south side of the border. And just on the south side of the border. You can literally walk to the downtown border crossing in five minutes. You also are very close to the old shopping section of the city, although the offerings there have been curtailed by American hostility and the difficulties associated with the border. In other words, Nogales was more a booming tourist town 40 years ago than it is now. Still, the town is fun, there are some nice stores, many medical and dental offices are very close and within easy walking distance, I have always felt safe, and the hotel is cool. It is not palatial, But the rooms, especially the new suites, are spacious, quiet, with good beds and great bathrooms. Also, the staff is reasonably helpful. It does help to speak some Spanish, but not a lot is necessary. Be advised that the hotel is in a mixed part of town. Meaning there is a lot of activity, A noticeable police presence, and some hookers at night. This is not terribly troublesome unless you are easily offended. I have never felt hassled or threatened. The hotel has a decent restaurant and bar, although it suffers from disco styling. Given the colonial nature of the hotel, something more traditional might be advised. The staff will valet park your car in a secure lot. I always drive and have never had problems. All in all, it is a great place to stay. BTW you should get the best deal if you call the hotel directly. Rooms with a northern exposure have a view of the border but tend to be noisy.

This place is exceptional. What makes it exceptional? The staff here is the best. My friend needed…read moreto have dental surgery and chose to have it in Mexico to save mucho dinero. He has mobility issues and gets around on a motorized scooter. There are several steps leading up to the entrance of Hotel Fray and staff quickly came out, disassembled his scooter, and carried it inside for him. The lobby was tastefully decorated and very inviting with several comfortable couches and chairs to relax in. There is a bar and restaurant attached to the lobby. The young lady who checked us in, Danielle, was very kind and spoke pretty good English. She remembered my friend from the last time he was there. Check-in wasn't until 3 PM but they had at one of our rooms available at 10 AM so I was able to come back and take and nap while my friend was in surgery. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom was large with a stand up shower. We got 2 rooms for $45 each a night which is a steal. You are only a few blocks from the US border and in the middle of all the shopping, dining, and dental centers that Nogales has to offer. Everything about Hotel Fray was great and I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again!
