He had not been eating well, and his breathing had become somewhat labored the night before. The person I spoke with was so kind and professional, and was able to squeeze me in fairly close to their closing time. My previous vet clinic and emergency vet clinics were all at least a half hour away, out of the question considering the breathing issues. He would already pant heavily in distress during car rides when healthy. So it was a huge relief to get an appointment in town, at a clinic of which family and friends spoke quite highly. From the moment I walked in I knew Mackers was in the best hands. The whole Black Dog team from Dr. Boyle to the technicians, team lead, and customer service rep showed an extraordinary level of compassion and empathy during what turned into one of the hardest moments of my life. Mackers was quickly administered oxygen and had x-rays taken that showed a large mass in his chest. Dr. Boyle was amazing--she came over with Kleenex and got down on her knees next to me to discuss the diagnosis and plan. It was obvious what needed to be done to prevent further suffering. Even though the clinic was closing in an hour, I was never rushed. The team gave space and as much time alone as I needed to say goodbye and consider final arrangements, while making sure both Mackers and I were as comfortable as possible. The team's gentle approach, calm demeanor, and genuine empathy meant more than I can put into words. Thank you.
