Representing. With Receipts. Fresh Oxtail anyone?
    Mardory V.

Every. Single. Time. I walk in Palm Tree intending to purchase only a FEW items, I end up seeing yet another thing that I want to buy. You name it, and they've got it. Were you looking for soursop, fresh or dried? Did you need fresh, whole fish? Or was it salted cod fillets, or coconut milk, or coconut oil, or jackfruit? They have a fresh fish counter, an astounding amount of goat, beef and chicken options and everything from tinned cheese to frozen vegetables. The place is small but uses every corner to the utmost starting with produce at the entry to dairy and vegan foodstuffs (soy protein, tempeh etc) near the rear. There are only about four or five registers but the lines move quickly. The staff ranges from Caribbean to Asian to Latino so there is someone who speaks every language and then some. During my last visit, it smelled like someone was cooking Sunday dinner in the back and I wish they could have shared some. If you are reading the other reviews and believing them, please continue to stay away because this place gets packed enough without your patronage. (Ha!) This place is clean and reasonably priced, so it is definitely not like Whole Foods. I will continue to shop here and hope that this place continues to thrive! I'm only hopeful that a place like this opens up in Harlem.

The tropical imagery on the front of the store

I'd passed the store en route to other places in the past, yet never went in. The side of the store is plastered with imagery of tropical produce and beaches, conjuring the Caribbean. This is best described as a grocery store with West Indians (especially Jamaicans) as they primary target. I live in the West Bronx where there isn't a huge West Indian population. Spending a lot of time in Brooklyn, I'm used to picking up staples while I'm out and about. I made a concerted effort to use Google to find a specialty market to find a particular Trinidadian curry. I wasn't sure that I'd be able to get it in the Bronx. Traveling hear wasn't exactly easy, but it was a nice day and I tried my luck. I was impressed at the system the store had for socializing distancing, only allowing a certain amount of customers in at once. A bonus was that the employee gave each customer a pair of disposable gloves before entering. Within seconds, I saw that there was a large spice display at the end of the aisle. I was able to find several Trini curry blends, of which I bought. I saw that they sold traditional items like breadfruit, which is also not common in the West Bronx. The selection of beverages, snacks, produce, and staples were good. I also picked up a ginger sorrel drink. In the back there's a fish market, selling fresh selections. I would be interested in buying some cuts to grill at home. Overall, the only downside was that despite the social distancing, the aisles are very narrow. Other than that, I would like to go back

I second the statements, but the pricing are good. Parking is the worst. Try to park on Boston Road due to side street is impossible.

So one Saturday afternoon, I finally stopped by with my mom. The space itself is airy, with like floor-to-ceiling windows that let in beautiful natural sunlight. The sun hits these whimsical, almost 18k-gold-looking sculptures on their shelves, giving the shop an elevated feel. The shop is small- but it's the kind of place where you want to slow down and really look around. Manahel offers a nice variety of Yemeni honeys, each with its own benefits. I ended up choosing a ginger honey and another infused with lemon, while my mom went with the ginger for herself too. In addition to honey, they also carry oils for hair and skin, which was a nice bonus and made the shop feel more holistic instead of it being one-note. Let's talk price- it's definitely on the steeper side. The smallest jars I purchased were about $30 each. For me, it felt like it was for the greater good- especially since I teach and my students are always sick. It was quality, intention and something I'm actually using for my health and wellness. There are still a few other items I have my eyes on. Honestly, Manahel feels like a 3-in-1 spot where beauty, their tradition and wellness come together- and that to me, makes it worth to return.

This last time that I went, I got hard to find food products. I got frozen jute leaves for my Haitian friend. I got dried taro leaves for my Filipino co-worker. I myself got: bamboo leaves, frozen banana leaves, frozen bitter leaves, preserved duck eggs, fresh water chestnuts and tons of spices. I bought some meat from the butcher section and the guy sliced the meat up to my request. They have bones for soup. I saw durians, banana flowers, sorrel flowers, two types of bitter melons(the Asians and the Guyanese type), etc etc. They have Mexican products, Indonesian, Thai, Malaysian, Filipino, Indian and of course Chinese products. There is a huge variety of products to make dishes from at least half of the world. It is a typical Chinese grocery store. The aisles are clean and stocked with a lot of items. For example, the noodle aisle is 1/4 full of all types and width of rice noodles. So for those gluten free people, they will think that they are in heaven. They have other types as well. At the time, I was interested in getting noodles to make a few bowls of pho...therefore the bones and meat for it. They also have mushroom oyster sauce for the gluten free people. I digress. Anyways, give this supermarket a try. Don't get deter by the fish market with fishy smell when you walk in. If I were the owner, I would have put the fish shop in the back. BUT, what's done is done. Enjoy!
