The seats are too close to the row in front. I'm not tall, but I found the seats to be very uncomfortable.

The seats were okay, he is small and kept getting sucked back but we adjusted and made it work. It wasn't busy at all which was shocking since it was opening day. Overall we had lots of fun. I habitually arrive early, so I went into the theater and got into the refreshment line at 6:40, 20 minutes before the 7 pm show I had a ticket for (I had bought my ticket online about a week prior). It was crowded, as one might expect on a holiday weekend. And the line moved incredibly slowly: I finally had my drink and candy at 7:10, starting to worry that if I didn't get to my seat soon, I might miss the start of the movie. I glanced again at my ticket: Auditorium 5, seat E15, headed there immediately and went straight into the theater. But something was clearly wrong: The prior movie had just ended, final credits still rolling, at what was now about 7:13. And it clearly wasn't "Wicked." What the...? I looked around, didn't immediately see any helpful signage, so I asked a kid from the cleaning crew that was just entering the auditorium between shows. He said that "Wicked" was on screen 6, so I headed over there -- only to find that in that auditorium THERE WAS NO SEAT E15!!! Most of the audience was seated and trailers had started, but I had no seat. I looked frantically for anyone who looked like a manager -- no luck. So I went back to no. 5, bothered the cleaning crew again, and one of them said he could change my ticket. He looked up the show and found that a few seats were unsold, and gave me one of them. I finally got a seat -- not as good a seat as the one I'd paid for, but at least a seat -- about 30 seconds before "Wicked" started. There's no excuse for this. They had my email and had sent me my ticket that way. They could have notified anyone who had bought a ticket that the show had been moved to a different screen and seats might need to change, but apparently no one thought of it or cared enough to notify paying customers. I have no clue whether this place is always run this ineptly, but I will do my best not to find out.

I was very impressed, I've been to many and this one is top notch. The seat controls appear to be disabled and it would have been great to be able to recline the seat backs. I spent most of my time in the planetarium and saw four of the five shows with visiting a few of the exhibits between showings. Of my four shows I enjoyed the interactive Panana Kilo Hoku-Our Wayfinder's Compass program the most. It was informative, educational and entertaining; led by a very professional lecturer. I'm an engineering nerd. The keiki show was mostly accurate excepting for Tycho's ears sticking out of his space suit and would explode on the moon. If you are an astronomy buff, I'd recommend staying for at least 4 hours to take in the shows and exhibits. You can also have a great meal at the restaurant, which I reviewed separately. I saved the last show and the exhibits for the next visit, definite repeat. This would also be an excellent place to visit between your hotel checkout and late flight back to the mainland.

The theater brings in both local and international performers and is the site for many student performances from UH-Hilo and Hawaii Community College. An annual highlight is the UH-Hilo International Student Association's "International Nights" held every February. Student and community performances are featured from over a dozen countries from around the Pacific, Asia, North America, and Europe. That the event is student coordinated is especially impressive. Facilities are quite nice. Though the outside looks worn, the interior is comfortable, clean, and professional. I especially appreciate that the facility is wheelchair accessible since my mom loves to attend shows. When she is in a wheelchair, we are seated on the top row with a great view since no seat is too far from the stage. The box office is once again easily accessible at the entrance to the building. Previously it was hidden in the back of the building during the construction of a nearby building. Most tickets can be bought in person, over the phone, or online. There are often discounts for students, senior citizens, and alumni. Facilities are available for rent by non-university affiliated organizations if conducting "charitable, civic, community, cultural or educational activities which are operated on a not-for-profit basis and whose activities are appropriate for such facilities where the use does not infringe upon, delay or conflict with the normal operations of the University" (http://artscenter.uhh.hawaii.edu/FacilityUseInformation.php).
