I am not sure what was going on. The venue was cool. an open area with art. What more can you ask? The art was fun. The venue provided an opportunity to talk with other viewers and the artist. Out of all the galleries and creative spaces in Pittsburgh KCC goes above and beyond for local artists new, emerging, and seasoned. We're treated with respect, care and appreciation. I really believe they should write about on the importance of supporting local artists.

There is a BYOB option and if you plan to drink you are required to sign a form that says they didn't give you the alcohol. Most people bring wine, however you can bring beer, mixed drinks, or non-alcoholic beverages. They provide cork screws and plastic cups in addition to everything that you need to paint. Food is also allowed, however space is limited and there is not a lot of table space after canvases, paint brushes, and paint are all laid out. The reason that they received a 4 out of 5 rather than a 5 is because the instructors are really a hit or miss. While all of them do display artistic abilities, some are just better teachers than others are. If you find an instructor that you like, try to stick with them when you sign up for classes online.

My sister-in-law has been wanting to try one of these painting classes and I saw that they had just opened a new place in Irwin. So, we decided to check it out. The class was on a Friday night in June and was supposed to be from 7-9pm. The class was nearly full....since there were several small groups of ladies, as well as a bridal party of about 10. Luckily, we got there before most people and were able to get seats up front. This is a BYOB event, and it appeared mostly everyone (including us) brought a bottle of wine (or several) and snacks. The instructor was very nice. At the beginning, she gave us her credentials so we knew she was an actual painter with experience and not just someone they pulled off the street. She reviewed what we were going to paint and went at a nice pace. Actually, probably a little slow for me but it's better than her rushing through. She also gave us free reign and "artistic liberties", so the paintings didn't all have to look exactly alike. It was a fun event and I would love to go again. Biggest pro...the class was only $20! And I've seen other places as high as $35 or $40. The only reason I didn't give this event 5 stars is the following: It was waaayyy too long. Supposed to be over at 9pm; we didn't leave until well after 10:30. The biggest cause for this was when we got there at around ten minutes til seven, the instructor was just starting to set up. She did state that she had everything set up, but then a last-minute birthday party booked, so they had torn all of her things down, and she had to get them all back out. Not very professional of the company. We didn't really get started until about 7:35-ish. Plus, with a big class and people asking her questions, I think it just took longer than anticipated. Also, it was a bit unorganized, which I do give leniency to since it's a new gig. I signed the two of us up online and also paid online. But, really, how was the instructor to know? We could have just strolled in from the street and said we paid. The site offered no receipt or confirmation number to take with you to the event. I asked the instructor if she received our payment, and she stated that she gets paid from the company, and frankly has no idea who paid and who didn't. Overall, a fun night out. Would go again!

Attended a student art show last night with a friend who teaches a class at PCA. There were so fantastic pieces created by the adult students. In addition of course there were other exhibits that we were able to tour. When I was in art school this was a place we visited often. Time to get back in the swing of things. The gift shop is still fantastic and filled with lots of unique items.

After brunch at Square cafe we needed to take a little walk and absorb some rays. It is a very serene setting and once they get the fountain running I may just come to sit and ponder. The building is so big and they offer many summer art classes so check out the website to see what they have. Events are held here all summer, mostly weddings. I went in to see the printmaking lab, I mostly do screenprinting but they don't have the light tables or screens here. The receptionist was so helpful and said that there would be printmaking classes over the summer and to call one of the directors to see what they might be able to do for me in regards to the type of medium I want to work with. If you need a place to do intaglio or relief printing they have a great space to print!

The entrance to the space is down a somewhat steep driveway situation in the back of an establish business. Not sure how well lit their parking lot would be at night and you may feel a little nervous until you get inside. The interior is a much larger space than I thought it looked from the exterior. I believe there are two break rooms so you could be breaking next door to another group at the same time. It's partitioned very well so you shouldn't see their debris flying into your space but you will likely hear their "rage" (laughter and breaking). The owner was super nice and a great conversationalist. She provided us a music genre of our choice in our room and an extra bonus box of beer bottles. She also provided us with gloves and a face shield for safety. My reservation was for a whole hour but smashing 3 boxes of items and chatting with the owner might have only taken us 25 mins. She offered us more smashables for very reasonable prices but as middle aged adults we assumed our throwing arms might be sore in the a.m. It was so fun and we laughed a lot together. Great short little date. I brought home a Santa tea cup as a souvenir from our box. Didn't have the heart to smash him and his reindeers. Overall, GREAT experience. I wish this business well. She has innovating ways of promoting the city of Pittsburgh. She normally reduces the complexity of her crafts during an event so that we are not overwhelmed with the process. She is very friendly and helpful. Among the crafts we have done were make a city in a bottle, create a plant, screen and block printing of cards. The last project we did was make a simple bracelet. Not too long ago we rolled a candle which you can actually burn. I'm not very good when it comes to crafts to she's always willing to lend a helping hand. That came in handy when we made a plant since it involved simple sewing and I just couldn't get to work right with all the yarn. It really promotes our city and makes you proud to be from PIttsburgh.
