We had a warm welcome in there and we were shown to our table right away. We were a table of six - four chefs and two publicans. It's tiny in here, but that really adds to the ambience and charm of the place. I'd imagine that I'd feel a bit self conscious if I was on a date with a hot lady, the tables seem pretty close.. An awkward silence would be noticed by all the other diners. As for the food though, it was really good. I had a game terrine to start. Roast duck with dauphinoise for mains and a sticky chocolate cake for pud. We had a measly bit of delicious home made bread as well, I like to be in charge of my own bread, not be offered one slice, however delicious is it. We went on a Wednesday, so it was under £30 for three courses. That's great value if you think about it. A duck breast would cost maybe £16-17 elsewhere, then split the other two courses between the rest. We spent a fortune, but we had lots of wine. All in all a very nice place, and something Taunton needs to hang on to before it is totally overrun with faux Italian joints. I'll go again for sure. Cheers.

He's brought a new team of chefs in with him, so I'm told. Those chefs certainly seem to be earning their money as they turned out excellent gastro pub style food. Not quite fine dining but not far off. Looking at the menu I could have chosen any of the starters or mains. I went for the goats cheese "mousse" for starters and fish from the specials board for mains. The portion of goats cheese I had was very generous (some places only give you a small amount because of cost I guess) although I felt it was a bit heavy to be a mousse. It was really nice all the same. The fish was perfectly cooked and the pommes anna was a perfect accompaniment. The pub's decor probably didn't quite match the quality of the food and I think some people will be surprised how good the food it. The was a really good range on the menu from unusual items (I'd never had samphire before) to regular items such as burgers and fish and chips. The evening menu was great, quite pubby with the fish and chips, burger and steak, but they threw in some nicer things like scallops with cauliflower and bacon, plaice with caper butter and something else that I didn't order... It's not too pricey, so well worth a trip if you're in Somerset. As for Sunday, it was refreshing to see a pub that actually knows what a decent Sunday lunch is. It had non-standard veg going on, like beetroot and spinach. The potatoes weren't greasy and old like we're all used to in pubs. The yorkies were awesome too. I'll go again for sure.

I would recommend it for couples who want a romantic meal together is is quite expensive but if you want to a tasty meal in a beautiful environment then this is for you. We'd been traumatised by travel, travelling en masse, tired with hunger taunting us in Taunton, we…read morewanted something nicer than filling up at a roadside filling station. We found a quiet atmosphere-free Free-house to decide on dinner. Bar-side with sweet cider inside us, we made a connection with the frontage opposite. A large comic font banner, a sticker in the window beckoned us to 'The Connection', but from outside we couldn't be sure if it was a restaurant or a travel agency, or even a dating agency. Then a lit candle warmed the setting under the aforementioned confusing banner. It illuminated a double date just visible at the window table. With each person looking into the middle distance they were looking like they were making anything but a connection. Hoping the food was more inspiring and afraid of the alternative offerings of only pizza or kebab, we edged cautiously over the double junction double quick to enquire. A Sandwich board outside announced it was 'Winesday', a free house bottle for every table. We went in. Entering we were heralded by pan pipes; a mix tape began swirling the comforting melody of The X Files theme tune around us. Before we had time to turn back our waiter appeared. Looking surprised to see us form a crowd on a weekday night, our jolly characterful waiter with Fawltless formality apologised for an impending slow service. Not in our best bib and tuckers however, he did seem a little shirty. "Do you have a booking", he enquired taking a formal tone (where until our arrival the place was empty). Grateful for the seats and that it was Winesday, too! The free house's choice bottle for the table more than made up for our non trumpeted arrival. Pleasantly surprised by their Chilean, I'm more than happy to blow their horn for their choice of a bold tropically lush white which complimented our food beautifully. It seemed we'd struck gold at the best place on the street. The interior of this French place was pretty snappy, all muted tones that spoke volumes that this was the town's 'nice place'. To start: My liver parfait was mousse like, light yet retained a rich smooth flavour, braced in crisp pancetta. I'd have enjoyed the accompanying brioche more but I'd buttered too much pre dinner pre warmed pumpkin seed roll to stack up on more carbs. The rest of the table were very happy with the beautifully fresh caught scallops to start, complimented by Southeast Asian spicing, but just a few of the blighters were a bit underdone for one of our likings. Not undoing the enjoyment of our evening, Seafood crepes, covered in grilled cheese were delicious but sadly the salmon within was as mushy as the concept of Parisienne romance that this French inspired brasserie was trying to convey. Also warned of the possible shot, the equally fresh duck dish sitting proudly in a pond of jus was rich and flavourful but as with any duck recipe it either needs long slow cooking to break down the tough meaty fibre or quick cooking to keep it rare as fine French food. Not offensive, but this duck was somewhat perched on the fence. What stole the show was the firm and delicate delectable lemon sole and the passionate enthusiasm of our attentive waiter. Not knowing what else Taunton had to offer, it was well worth one hell of a stopover. We wimped out at dessert, but it seemed that it was this course that kept the table adjacent to us who were out at at sea, back on course for a cheerful evening.

The Rake & Riddle caters for everyone with a tidy sized restaurant, sports bar and cafe. There is an outdoor seating area and play area for the kids. With a tidy sized car park to the rear. I had the mixed grill, which was cooked perfectly, and my wife had the Gammon which she thoroughly enjoyed. The chips that came with both are cooked just like regular chip shop chips, which is a major plus from us. The price is comparable with similar restaurants and I felt the portions were good value for the money.

Very small but intimate, warm place with lots of little nooks and cool little places to cuddle up with your special one and a few great pints. Live music was excellent, and it definitely filled the place, making it actually a bit too hot for my comfort, but that's how the English do it. Seating outdoors as well for the smokers. Small bar food menu, but also an upper restaurant part as well with full menu of your usual British food. So glad we stumbled upon this place, somewhat hidden from the main road, and will always be a place we visit when in town.

This has got to be one of the oldest pubs in South Wales, it's medieval and dates from 1380. I havn't eaten here, but there is also a well respected restaurant upstairs offering a good selection of seafood dishes. Dishes include: Brixham Crab Cake with baby leaves and lemon butter sauce (£5.25); Plaice Goujons with paprika and a sweet red pepper tartar sauce (£4.95); Roasted Fillet of Hake with a chorizo and roasted red pepper risotto ith tomato, garlic and orange sauce for £13.95 For the vegetarians on the day I visited there was: Tomato Fondue, Wild Mushroom and Aubergine Bake, finished with garlic crumb and poached egg (£4.95) and Rosemary and Truffle Arancini Risotto with a tomato, red onion and spring onion salsa ( £4.95).
