I wanted to take a Torre of this railway station so I came along and self-guided myself around…read more It's a little Suburban Railway Station close to Torquay and Torbay, and you can find it in the spectacular and touristy coastal region of the Southeastern portion of the county. It's close to the final station which is Torquay on this line, a place where the station cafe makes great food, and is right on Newton Road which is the road that goes to Newton Abbot. There are some Suburban stores right next to it, and it's old and pretty and features a really lovely tower at the entrance. The tower is reminiscent of something totally different from somewhere totally different.

Or if that's hot with you, even. Dartmouth down in Southern Devon has its own steam railway line, privately owned, and it's a great one. It begins in a lovely part of the old city with a station that we have used on a number of occasions and will probably continue to do so in future. I like it and I think it's well-designed and perfectly located for tourists, and there's a little parking nearby too if you drive like we did. It's a grand little old steam train, and is one of the prettiest in the country, not only Devon, and most stations in most towns along this little route are a little way out of the beautiful centres, and utterly gorgeous!

Make sure you check times before turning up as they vary between seasons and days of the week. Dartmouth is a lovely place to visit and getting there by steam train then boat is a fine old way to travel. The trains are between 60 and 90 years old!

The hosts were very friendly and helpful; they have even laundered my clothes for free (on request, of course). The English breakfast was delicious and nutritious (+3kg of body weight for 1 week). Location is good for Paignton - close to the sea/ocean (1-2 min walking) and to a bus station. Though, it is a bit far (for walking) from the attractions of Torquay, but you can take a bus or drive yourself.

Good for him then…read more This is a lovely old Cliff Railway in Torquay, one of my fave seaside towns in all of England, with an amazing station cafe with great food at the nearby Torquay rail station. This little old steep grade slow speed train will take you up and down the cliffs and it's one of the highlights of this lovely little South Devon region. It's a beautiful part of the country and it's a beautiful sight and ride to come and enjoy. It connects the beach with the downs and is not really a train in the traditional sense, but a funicular railway. It's also now a charity owned thing rather than council owned.

It's not a very long journey but the view from the carriage is amazing. We were going to go again before we came back home but didn't get chance. It was £5 for a family one way (I think it would have been the same for a return ticket as well).
