Most of the vodka came from Poland and Russia. Their wines are from all over, such as Russia, Bulgaria and Serbia. They also carried a good amount of domestic alcohols and stronger liquor from Mexico. The cashier mainly kept to herself, but was quite friendly when I checked out. We made small conversation and she taught me how to say "thank you" in Bulgarian. It is nice to find these locally owned import shops with great prices. I walked out with a large bottle of Bulgarian No Man's Land wine, two boxes of Bulgarian tea and a tin of Greek stuffed grape leaves for $14.

This is a GREAT store if you love excellent wines and cheeses. I drive from Wicker Park to load up…read moreon both, sometimes buying 2 cases of wine. Bulgarian wines are virtually unknown in the US (the Europeans snap up most of each year's production), and the immediate reaction to the uninitiated when serving them is "uh,,,.. okay...." . The overwhelming reaction after tasting is "OMG, this is absolutely AMAZING! Where did you GET this?". Now you know what they know: I bought it at Sofia Liquor. My bias is toward dry, full-bodied reds, among which Bulgaria (and Sofia liquors) offers several world-class, international medal-winning varieties -- unbelievably, all available in the $9-$16 range. If your taste for reds runs like mine, you MUST check out the following brands/varieties at this store: 1. Unigato Rubin (the Rubin grape is a cross-breed of Syrah and Nebiola vines unique to Bulgaria). Spectacular. 2. Burgas Cabernet (my fav among the Burgas brand and truly outstanding). Look for the "B" on the front of the bottle 3. Burgas Merlot (I pref cabs to merlots generally, but this is the BEST Merlot I've ever tasted) Look for the "B" on the front of the bottle 4. No Man's Land (can't remember the variety -- not one of the common ones like merlot -- but I think it has a silver label) In whites, there are several outstanding choices (the staff is helpful in guiding your selection) but one brand that I recall is Chateau Euxinograde (this was the private vineyard of Bulgaria's Czars until the 1946 Communist overthrow). I really love one variety which goes by a 4-digit number (you'll know it when you see it) If you like a good cheese, check out the Kashkeval (creamy, gouda-like in texture and flavor but with a delicious, unique taste that everyone to whom I've introduced it really loves. Also, the Bulgarian feta is the best feta I've ever encountered, and I'll bet you'll agree. There is always plenty of angled parking spaces within 50 feet of the store, so no worries there. I'm going to load up tomorrow! Bottom line, finding this store and its products was like finding buried treasure. Put down your mouse, pick up your shovel, and start digging!

This place gets brownie points for the following:…read more 1) Having "my" brand of sangria cheaper than Binny's. 2) Having Robert The Bruce beer when Binny's didn't. 3) Letting me take some of their empty boxes when I was moving. 4) Carrying fresh limes all summer so you don't have to go back to the grocery store. 5) Knowing the difference between rum and cachaca. 6) I can ride my bike to here from my home! I do it for the exercise and to save gas, but I'll let everybody keep thinking that I bike to liquor stores because my license was taken away because of, um, my frequent visits to liquor stores. I like Binny's, but this is closer, has a great selection, and has better pricing on some items. I lately only go to Binny's for particular beers that Prestige doesn't always have, or has in limited quantities that may disappear quickly, like Sam Adams Blackberry Witbier. I took one star away because there seem to be some rude customers there pretty often; the kind of people who smash their car door into other people's doors and then yell at the person in the car they smashed like it was their fault for having the stupidity and audacity to park in their vicinity. Also, the parking lot can be a bitch to get out of if you drive. Also, I like that they card religiously, but there's this ONE GUY who likes to scrutinize the ID's of old ladies to make them feel young and beautiful or something, even if there's a line. Hey man, if you wait much longer, she's going to die before she can get home and drink that wine cooler. Really, though, I love this place. Thank you for selling good sangria on the cheap, Prestige!

Holy crap, yes, such a thing exists ^_^ In a fit of intrigue, yearning, and jealousy, I urgently got on the interwebz and used my keen investigatory abilities in order to find a place where i could get my desirous lil' hands on some bottles. The interwebz pointed me out to Prestige and minutes later i was in my car ready to go. Compared to other liquor stores, Prestige is on the smaller size, but it packs a big punch in terms of their craft and specialty beer selection. The place was clean, organized, and the guy in front of the counter was really helpful in terms of helping me find what i was looking for. The beer gods must have been looking out for me because i managed to snatch the last bottle of Wells Banana Bread Beer which cost around $5. I browsed their selection to see if i there was anything else cool to buy and hell yes there was. TONS of lefthand,Three Floyds, Lagunitas products, lots of interesting specialty porters, stouts, i found a creme brulee beer, a vanilla beer, AND i ended up purchasing a bottle of oatmeal stout. This place freaking rules and my banana bread beer was amazing. It smelled like bananas and tasted like awesome. Sorry Liver, but i'll be coming here back for surely .

Specialties like: Kraken rum, Camarena which is a premium tequila when set against Cuervo. Titos in a glass bottle which is a plus for those that enjoy the crisp flavor of a good vodka. (Keep'em in the freezer and shoot'em when you like.) Also it looks as though the serving size is larger than most bottles of that type but it is the same measure. I was also pleasantly surprised to find Stolichnaya minis. Another good vodka brand. In suburban liquor stores one can often find "airplane bottles" aka minis or "nips." Though, not every business will offer a finer collection. Mini bottles run from .99 cents to a few dollars depending. Usually the premium spirits carrying the higher pricing. Their setup along the counter is arranged like candy assortments found in similar convenience shops. Since I was waiting on bbq from the pizza joint next door, I had some time to kill stocking up on minis. The owner seemed nice. He was talking sports while I was making my choices. Although the name is Payless liquors.. I doubt that anyone is actually paying less for their booze. If you want discounted booze, head to a big chain. If you want to find something different or to save time, hit a convenience store.

I'm serious, it's a good thing I don't live super close to this location, because I would become a full-blown professional alcoholic if I did. You can find nearly anything you'd want to try, and you'll be amazed at how little you're paying. And the cherry on top is that they'll often give you free beer/wine carriers with your purchase if you pick up enough items. You should make this your go-to destination for all alcohol purchases if you're in the area.
