Yesterday we dropped off a baby dove that we rescued from our neighbor's dogs. (They called us since they know we rescue animals.) It was really sweet and we know that Pacific Wild Life will "foster" these baby birds, since we have left many baby birds here for tending. We usually give a donation for the care since we believe it is for a good cause. We have really enjoyed our interactions with the upbeat people who work here. They have also returned birds to the locations where we found them, a woodpecker to Cypress Ridge Golf Course, and a tiny oriole we named Trooper, since it was so feisty and chirped all night, to the tree in front of our house. For years after, orioles have nested in that tree. Pacific Wild LIfe has been gifted some acreage on Buckley Road in San Luis, and that should provide them with a larger space for their dedicated work! read more

Unlike other rehab facilities around the state, Pacific Wildlife has not published their survival and release statistics for years. They've euthanized every animal I've handed to them - several were mildly or completely uninjured. Today Pacific Wild Life care drove 30 miles from Morro Bay to my home in West Templeton to pick up a tiny blue bird that had been attacked by a bigger bird. I was unable to drive it there because I have neuropathy in my feet from chemo. (I'm 80) I was so happy that the little mite of a bird was taken care of. I strongly suggest donating to this rescue service. read more

I volunteered for them for a while before my health got worse. I loved my experience and cherish my memories. They taught me alot about animal husbandry, expanded my veterinary experience and taught me a lot about raptors. Volunteering here is very hands on and thusly rewarding. It can also be very bittersweet. If you are pre-vet, a vet tech or anyone interested in helping animals this is an awesome place to do so!! Some one shot a mother possum (who just delivered 7 babies)dead in our backyard . One baby is curling out and others are still in mother opossum's pouch alive . We called PWC and dropped them opossums to the care center. 7 babies are alive and the lady from PEC is very nice and polite. We are glad those opossum babies are in good hand now ! read more

PWC is a great resource for SLO county. I have taken many injured animals there for treatment, seabirds, songbirds, raccoons, & opossums. They are open EVERY DAY! They have a full time wildlife vet on staff and great dedicated volunteers. You guys ROCK! read more

Would like to see statistics on the percentage of kinds of animals saved vs euthanized. I have taken three wild creatures there. All were killed. One was a baby squirrel with no injuries and the squirrel lady was waiting to take him. Another a bird just needing antibiotics. I will not take any more wildlife there. It is a high kill shelter. If an animal is inconvenient and they are busy the creature is a goner. read more

On 6/9 I left a beautiful "very healthy" (per veterinarian's exam) young Mockingbird named 'Scout' (#1089) I had rescued and hand-fed for over two weeks' time in the care of PWC. I loved this bird like it was my baby and it trusted me. I blame myself first and foremost for leaving him/her there without first getting a tour of the facility, which I was denied. A week later I'm informed that this beautiful, previously healthy, bird was destroyed because it had avian pox, which I have no doubt it contracted while at the facility. Had I known of the risk I NEVER would have left Scout. Scout needed to be weaned and I thought I was leaving him/her in the hands of experts. (I only gave 1 star because I had to in order to post. Otherwise, it would be zero.) read more

Dropped off a baby bird that fell out of the nest. We had taken care of it for a few days as we found it over the weekend and then we were not able to get it over to this place due to work schedule. So, being the people we are, we love this baby bird. Brought it in, the lady at the front asks what it is as she is taking the carrier from me to bring it in the back. I tell her it's a baby bird and she says "oh great another one" & goes in the back. She comes back out with an empty carrier and tells me to fill out a form. I fill it out & hand it to her as she scoffs at the info about the bird on it. She then says "So are you going to donate anything to help with the bird's care?" & I replied "I don't have checks or cash on me..." & She cuts me off to tell me they accept credit cards before I could finish telling her that my husband is the one who donates for our family anyway & I would have him call and so that when he gets a chance. I tried telling her this after & she just started doing something on the computer and continued to scoff at me. I then asked her if someone would be able to call me Friday to just give me an update & let me know how the baby bird is doing. And she again cuts me off and says "No! Nobody is going to call you bc we don't have the staffing or time to call you!" So I said "Ok, well is there a number I can call to check in then?" And she reluctantly gave me a phone number with an animal number & procedded to tell me that I will ahve to leave a message and someone will try to get back to me if they have time but it's unlikely. I have been sick to my stomach about leaving the bird there bc after the way she behaved, I do not feel confident that they will be as sweet & caring to the bird as he/she deserves. I know she is just a front desk person but idk who all is involved in caring for the animals. I wish I had asked for the beird back to take him/her elsewhere. read more

I called about a lame wild turkey. Didn't leave a message. Figured nobody cared.... and BOOM...someone called me back anyway! They immediately rounded up a volunteer to capture and treat the bird. Unfortunately, the injured bird had left the area, but Jack made quite an effort looking for it. What a wonderful organization! Somebody does care after all. read more

PWC is fantastic!! We are so lucky to have them as the only place that rehabs wildlife for slo county. All my encounters with them have been great. They are very caring people and do the best to get wildlife back where it belongs. There vet is highly skilled and gives those animals the best chance at recovery from complicated injuries. Recently my family was vacationing in Pismo Beach at a rental condo where we encountered a pair of orphaned raccoons. After several phone calls we were put in touch with this rescue center. A volunteer from Grover Beach came out but the animals had left and a search was uneventful. The following day they returned and the volunteer was able to gather up the animals to rehab and relocate. Very impressed with both the person on the phone at the center and the gentleman who came out to retrieve the animals both very professional. We were glad the raccoons have been given a second chance. We have also sent a donation to the center to help with future saves. read more

Steer clear. There are a lot of better organizations out there to call. For us, 3 out of 3 times, bad experience. You never want to judge an organization on the interaction with one looser employee, but a visit there sealed the deal, stay away. read more

PWC is an amazing non-profit organization that is the only one of its kind for SLO County wildlife rehabilitation and release (not to mention a great education committee!). Please support them!
