The Nutcracker
Nari N.

We've been here a few times, only to see The Nutcracker which is lovely and very family friendly. My 10 year old loves it so much and can't wait to go back next year! The theatre itself is beautiful and there is ample (paid) parking though a connected parking garage. There are light food and drink (alcohol and non-alcoholic) options available and of course many restaurants close by. It's right by the Space Needle so if you're visiting make sure to include that as part of your itinerary. It's Seattle so the dress code isn't super fancy but you also don't want to show up in gym clothes either. The sound is great and the venue is small enough where you will have good view from pretty much any seat but do keep in mind that the first few rows are completely flat ( I think up until row G?) so not so kid-friendly.

Amazing first time experience at McCaw hall ballet. Nutcracker was one of my favorite ballet! It brought me many childhood memories as my mom used to take me when I was a kid back in Europe. Classic Tchaikovsky music was always such a pleasure to listen. I love the costumes, the choreography the music, decorations everything was absolutely amazing. Only one thing I didn't like but it's not ballet related its more to McCaw hall. Coming from Europe and going my whole life to ballet & theatre we have amazing breaks with champagne small bites and fancy crostinis. The beer in plastic cup and selection of some donuts was absolutely disappointing. I took 1 champagne that they forced me to pour in plastic cup and it was so disgusting! I regret I took that drink I couldn't even finish it. I wish choices were more extravagant just like in Europe.

Absolutely beautiful show. Performers were fantastic! It was my 7 year olds first time at the ballet and she absolutely loved it! Snacks and drinks were super overpriced as expected. The gift shop was as adorable with reasonably priced gifts and toys. We will be back next year!

I saw PNB's Nutcracker last week. I haven't been to many plays in my life, and even less so in recent times, so I was walking into it with a fresh perspective. My first impression after the play is that it's mainly meant for kids and seniors. The first half was incredibly slow with very little actual ballet, mostly just setting up the story it seemed, so that was disappointing. The second half picked it up with the ballet and dancing, but it didn't really blow me away. I went to see the Chinese ballet Shen Yun a while back and remember being far more impressed with the performance itself. The staff were very helpful and organized in guiding people towards their seats. You can't bring drinks inside the theater and two bottles of water cost us $11, so be careful. The establishment itself is really nice and used to be the main stage for the Seattle Symphony. If you're in Seattle and ran out of things to do or have young kids, it might be worth letting the PNB occupy one of your nights. Just don't go in with very high expectations because you'll likely be disappointed.

Birthday trip

We had an excellent time at the ballet!! We saw the nutcracker for my friends birthday, and it was the perfect start to our day in Seattle!! Highly recommend as a date night, or a family day. My only complaint was that it was a bit stuffy inside.

The master, before PNB destroyed his masterpiece.

PNB has massacred one of the greatest works of one of the greatest composing artists in human history. Are you childless and wonder what school pageants are like? Here is your opportunity to experience the insufferable agony. Watch inept children play follow-the-leader in costume while their helicopter parents sporadically break into unearned applause. Do you hate ballet but feel forced to attend? Fear not, because you will never see less actual ballet in a ballet production, guaranteed. Would you have preferred to see the Radio City Rockettes or a burlesque show, but your family dragged you to The Nutcracker instead? Don't worry, because you will see Rubenesque women and jazzercise moves aplenty. Would you like to see what a ballet looks like when two leads each ignore each other? Got you covered. I feel dumber for having attended this atrocious program.

Back at my favorite place Worlds to come, world premiere at the PNB

Amazing performance as always from the Pacific Northwest Ballet! This was one of my favorites and hope it comes again soon

Seating is comfortable for a long show, with good sightlines from where I sat. I also enjoyed the outdoor areas -- nice spots to hang out before the performance and a pleasant pre-show atmosphere. The touring production of The Phantom of the Opera at Paramount Theatre was absolutely fantastic…read more The cast was incredible, and the production itself deserved a much better audience environment than what the theater allowed. Unfortunately, this was one of the worst theater etiquette experiences I've ever had. During the first act, a man seated behind us repeatedly sang along during the performance. When I politely asked him to stop, the person next to him sarcastically pointed at the stage and said, "The show is over there," while the behavior continued. Around us, multiple people talked throughout songs and scenes, and later in the evening I even saw someone openly filming the show on an iPhone. I eventually had to leave my seats (Main Floor 2, Row G) and speak to management because the disruptions were so bad I couldn't focus on the performance. The only solution offered was seats in the very back of the orchestra. By that point, the experience was already frustrating enough that it took a while to calm down and enjoy the show again. What's most disappointing is that this is the SECOND time I've experienced terrible audience behavior at this theater. I previously saw Back to the Future here and dealt with nonstop talking during that performance too. I attend theater regularly in Southern California at Segerstrom Center for the Arts and also frequently see shows in New York City. Ushers there actively monitor audience behavior and quickly shut down disruptions. At the Paramount, it felt completely unmanaged. For the prices being charged -- around $350 for my tickets through Ticketmaster -- audience members should not have to deal with talking, singing, and filming throughout a Broadway performance. Amazing production. Extremely disappointing theater management and audience control.

Very much enjoyed their Nutcracker performances. Highly recommend checking this out. Classic…read moreballet, stunning talent and I cannot believe they are students and not professional dancers!

Today I was invited by a friend to attend one of the student-oriented morning (1 hour) performances…read moreof the Nutcracker at Meydenbauer Place by the International Ballet Theatre. I knew nothing whatsoever of this company, and had no expectations, although I have seen many productions of the Nutcracker in my life, incl. the New York City Ballet, the Cleveland Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, and Ballet Met in Columbus. This company is a full school with a professional division. I didn't have the same expectations for professionalism as I would have for an all-professional ballet company, hence only 4 stars. However, all things considered, it really was a 5 star performance for what can be accomplished at this level. It is obvious that Vera Altunina, the director, whom I knew nothing about, is a woman of exquisite taste, experience, thoughtfulness, and intelligence. We are incredibly blessed here in Puget Sound in the fields of classical ballet as well as music. I was so impressed by the quality of dancing overall, the gorgeous scenery drops (not sure of my stage jargon here!), the stage craft, the mime quality, the costumes, and the lighting. Ms. Altunina is responsible for the choreography presented here, and I believe I recognized some familiar steps here and there showing she has adopted and adapted elements from the versions she danced in Russia so that everything suits her dancers. No one looked awkward or ungainly. I was immensely thrilled by the stage presence, acting, deportment, etc. of every dancer, whether the youngest of the performers or the older professionals. Everyone looked thoroughly prepared and experienced, so I'm guessing that Ms. Altunina is an extremely organized and skillful director. I was also extremely delighted by the two guest principal dancers, both from Kiev. Unfortunately, I didn't get a program, and so have no names to give you. Apparently, I was told later, that the principals are husband and wife. The Nutcracker prince impressed me with his long beautiful lines, elegant, graceful port de bras, and sublime effortless technique. His Sugar Plum Fairy was petite, elegant, and precise. Their harmony was wonderful, the dancing apparently effortless. I asked a few of the company dancers afterwards how they got those wonderful painted stage screens, and was told they had been painted in the Ukraine. This I could well believe, as they reminded me of some of the work of painting I have seen evident in book illustrations, etc. (The Ukraine, and also Russia, must have a factory that cranks out extremely talented artists, and perhaps we should be hiring their art teachers as well!) I also appreciated all the costumes, and was happy to see the snowflakes wearing kokoschnik-like headpieces with their pretty costumes. All of the performance appeared smooth and professional. I can't believe we can see this for a modest price in the much-maligned suburbs, without the hectic drive to the Seattle Center area. This is not to say you shouldn't go to see the PNB Nutcracker. I'd say go to both, as I myself will be later this month. One cannot have too much beauty and magic in their lives. We are already incredibly blessed to have Pacific Northwest Ballet here, and to discover that we have yet another ballet company is just extra whipping cream! Go take your kids, if possible, to one of the student performances. I sat next to a 3 year old boy, who appeared enraptured.
