This was my worst ever experience at the oyster bar. This was on a Friday evening. They didn't have baked potatoes. So I chose broccoli as my side. Served with no cheese or butter. Said they would bring me cheese to add on the broccoli, never happened. So I ate the bland broccoli as it was. The shrimp were very small and flatten so thin that when deep fried turned into shrimp chips. Spoke with the manager to no avail. She knew they didn't have potatoes to bake and Didn't seem too interested or concerned about the feedback. Next time I'll drive to the island. . read more

My brother wanted seafood and my cousin brought us to this restaurant in Harlingen. First, let me say the service was excellent - attentive and fast. The single star is for the food. This is a fried-food restaurant that uses lots of heavy batter. Some of our party ordered the skewers of broiled shrimp, which, in hindsight, I should have done. I opted instead for a Captain's platter of sorts, with three raw oysters, three cooked shrimp, three fried oysters, three fried shrimp, a fish filet, and a "stuffed crab." My dish arrived and there was a big, round brown thing in the middle with several slashes in the top of the dough. I thought it was bread, but when I explored one of the slashes it turned out to be a deep-fried ball of breading with "crab" inside. That was my stuffed crab and it was like cat food in texture. I ate the three tiny raw oysters (the size of nickels) and the cooked shrimp. The three skinny, limp tail-on shrimp were previously frozen and lifelessly perched on a dish of "cocktail sauce" that tasted like watery ketchup. If you want horseradish, you have to request it. The fried oysters were okay, but again more breading than oyster. The fried shrimp had been butterflied and pounded flat, then heavily breaded. I'm sure we were eating all frozen product tossed in a fryer. The two fish filets were a nice size and a nice whitefish but I had to peel most of the breading off to taste the fish. We learned later that there are better restaurants in the nearby town of San Benito. The food situation in Harlingen was pretty dismal. read more

Crowded with locals . Smelled good inside. Hostess was not friendly at all. Driving me and entree order take quickly. Metal silverware, paper napkins, ceramic plates. Cool 70s/80s music playing in background at a good volume. Ordered the flounder broiled. Comes with a baked potato, salad and bread. Butter on the table is vegetable oil. :( They told me the grilled flounder takes 30 minutes to prepare, as I was on a lunch break I opted for the fish fillet grilled, baked potato in place of fries, salad and grilled veggies. They did have Thousand Island dressing for my salad and did leave off the crotons as requested. Bread was very good even without fake butter on it. Grilled fish was tasty. Crispy outside and moist inside. I would eat here again if back in town. read more

Me and another lady senior went for lunch the other day here. That was our first and last trip to this place. She ordered the chicken plate lunch and it was terrible. The chicken was about 2" x 2" and it was so much breading on it, you could not find the chicken. I ordered fried oysters and the breading was so thick I had to peel it off. I thought they must have closed. Conveniently the hours on their door DO NOT state time of closure. We had the fisherman's platter and it was delicious. The fish was fresh and flaky, the fried shrimp was good and the fried scallops were awesome and actually the best part of the meal . The stuffed crab was very good and the french fries were hot, fresh and tasty. The ceviche however eas very disappointing. It looked like a cup of pico de gallo and there was very little fish. It tasted like lime and nothing else. I won't be having it again. The shrimp cocktail was good but a little saucy. Frozen margarita tasted a little watered down. Tea was good. I convinced my husband to dine here, despite his assumptions that it was going to be expensive and that he did not feel much like eating sea food that night. As we left, he could not stop commenting about how fresh and delicious the food was. He even thanked me for my suggestion. The interior looks old, and has obviously not been updated in a few decades, however, do not let that stop you from enjoying yourselves. The servers were pleasant and the portions were large. I grew up eating at the Oyster Bar, primarily their fried shrimp plate with fries, salad and dinner rolls. Now that I have eaten seafood in many other restaurants, I realize that the Oyster Bar may not have the biggest or best menu, but the shrimp was butterflied and was breaded in a great coating. The fries were good and the basic salad came with thousand island dressing. I used to make small shrimp po boys with the rolls and shrimp and use to dip them in the accompanying tartar and cocktail sauces. I give it four stars for nostalgia, reminding me of many meals I had there with my parents. I will definitely stop there for a fried shrimp plate next time I ever pass through Harlingen. read more

It was a real treat when my parents would load me and my brother into the car and we would go. It seemed so far away, but it was just down the road. I'm glad it's still open. Ceviche is the best we've had in years. Not over-marinated. They allow you to add your own final touches - lime, tabasco, Worcestershire. My passion for seafood is what brings me back time and time again to Oyster Bar. The shrimp are some of the freshest, most delicious shrimps I have tasted aside from restaurants on South Padre Island. My favorite dish has to be a half order of French Fried Shrimp and a half order of French Fried Scallops with french fries and a sweet tea. The one downfall of the restaurant has to be it's interior. Wood paneling and outdated tables, booths, and carpet set this restaurant back to the 80s if not earlier. I came here today with my mother and my 2 yr old son. We were very excited because we were looking forward to some good seafood. The server sat us at a booth, which I had requested so my two yr old son would not run around the restaurant. Unfortunately the booth was next to the windows which had vertical blinds that hang by clips. Of course that was a magnet to a child who wants to look outside at the cars that were parked outside. We got our ceviche (which was pretty good by the way) and my son proceeded to look out the blinds and say hi to my car that was parked out, when one of the blinds fell (did not break, just fell from the clip). As soon as we got our meal, some manager lady came to our table and proceeded to berate us in front of the entire restaurant. She walked up to us and said "Did he break my blinds?!? These blinds cost me two thousand dollars! And I'm sorry but they are just very expensive and he can't play with them!!" And walked off. Although I can somewhat understand her frustration, I was in complete shock that she had the audacity to say this in front of the entire restaurant, especially to paying customers on something that we did not break. Next thing I know, the server comes up to us and tells us "don't let him play with blinds." Although I know it was not her fault, and I still left her a good tip, I thought it was in poor taste for her to do that. Even though her crappy manager probably forced her to. We asked for our check and left. I have never been so disrespected in a restaurant because of my son, who is two and does not know any better than to look out a window to see the cars. Although the food we did manage to enjoy was good, the service was completely awful and I will never go there again. If you do not wish to have kids around put up a sign. Or if your window blinds are that precious to you than don't sit a 2 year old next to them. read more

I've been going to Oyster Bar with my grandparents for years. This past time was TERRIBLE! We had a group of 13 people and the waitress took our orders quickly (a few of us felt rushed). Not only that, but she NEVER smiled or showed any form of personality. Then, our food came out - half of the orders were wrong and the waitress acted like it was our fault. On top of that, they completely forgot my order so they rush cooked it. At the end of the night we got a big check and I got food poisoning all from terrible customer service. When I saw the menu I knew there wasn't much I could eat. I try to eat healthy and most things were breaded and fried. Staff was friendly and convinced me that if I chose to wait 20 minutes I could have my fish broiled. I decided to have the broiled whole snapper which was good but overpriced at $17. The salad was iceberg lettuce with one slice of tomato and one slice of onion. Choices of dressing were thousand island or ranch. The interior felt dated, dingy and dirty. Could definitely use a makeover. I'm writing this the day after I went because I'm super sensitive and will get sick to any type of food spoilage or unsanitary conditions.
