Decided to stop here while traveling thru the area. I can honestly say this place has the worst Mexican food we have ever tried. The staff was very friendly, so that's why it gets the 2 stars. The food had lots of heat, but no actual flavor. It was so bad, my husband threatened to stop there on the way home as a punishment for our kids. Let's set the record straight. Anyone eating there for the first time needs to have a seasoned co-pilot. This is not your ordinary Los Amigos, Azteco's, etc.. This is a part of a trilogy of greatness, starting with Emilio's. It's just like you can't watch the last Star Wars saying this is the worst movie ever, judging all the other movies. You need to understand it's not for everyone, but those who love it come from all over the world to fulfill their craving. Don't judge a book by its cover. Bring someone who knows how to order, otherwise you will just get average Mexican food like all the others without margaritas. Service is speedy; ambiance is "historic" (I.e., many furnishings and decor are from the late original owner Emilio from Battle Creek). Food reviews are mixed, but me and my family are long-time loyal patrons. I grew up eating Emilio's Tex-Mex style recipes (which are unique to him) and absolutely love it. There's nothing like it. It's Mexican food with FLAVOR! Friends and four of our past exchange students that we introduced to Oye Amigos (previously known as Emilio's) all really like it. They had never eaten authentic, old-time Tex-Mex. It's a long story, but Oye Amigos is the "new Emilio's" resurrected by a longtime waitress and cook who purchased Emilio's recipes from his family after he passed away. She and her family then opened Oye Amigos in Marshall and it is identical to Emilio's. Patrons like me, my family, and friends were relieved that Emilio's restaurant had been "reborn" and returned to serve this amazing, authentic food. It seems that the food is either "love-it or hate-it." If you are looking for Chi-Chi's style Mexican food, you're not going to find it at Oye Amigos. It's a local favorite--although, as I said previously, have introduced it to many other people out of the area who became instant fans. I have not lived in the area for four decades, but whenever an opportunity presents itself, I/we ALWAYS stop there to "get a fix." The second proprietor's children have since taken over the restaurant and they have not skipped a beat. They did add a few more choices to the menu beyond what Emilio served. Ok, the food was... edible. First off, the ONLY cheese they have in house is shredded Colby... no queso dip, no white cheese... Colby only ... their a la carte menu offers a bowl of cheese, but it is literally just that , a bowl of shredded Colby cheese. Almost as weird is the buttered corn tortillas they bring to your table... seriously odd and flavorless. Anyway, overall the food isn't GROSS, just mediocre wanna be Mexican... The food here was really sub par, the presentation worse. Heaps and chunks and globs of food thrown about a plate. Why is the cheese unmelted inside of my cheese burrito? Who makes a burrito that isn't wrapped, it's open faced??? Buttered flour tortillas? Mystery gravies? Where's the meat? Want chicken, that'll cost extra. Overall, a strange menu. Portions were large and gross. Each member of my party ordered distinctly different dishes but each dish looked and tasted the same. Just different priced globs, piles and heaps of food. This place was an eating disorder on a plate. That said, the service was excellent, hence the two stars. The waitress and other staff were friendly, efficient, and offered free samples of the sides (which were pretty bad). I felt sorry for them working in this bizarre Mexican place. The ambience was Bridge card meets a 1970's basement. Add the smiling waitresses and it was like eating in the Twilight Zone. I don't get the other positive reviews. They lead one to believe this place has served legendary Mexican food for decades. I can truly say I have never eaten Mexican food styled like this. It's been over 20 years since I've visited Marshall and ate at Oye Amigos. It was as good (or better) than I remembered. Yum!

I'm reading these reviews and have to wonder where these people eat. I assume they are used to chain restaurants and truly have no idea about authentic Mexican food. My family has been coming to Emilios/Oye Amigos for 4 generations. So like 50 years? Anyway, we love the place. If you are expecting assembly line tacos or some HS kid slapping some sour cream on a bed of fake beef nachos this isn't the place for you but if you want to experience a meal that will have you craving your next visit, try it. You won't be sorry. Don't listen to people that were one time visitors. Emilio will be there in spirit (pictures on the wall) and if you listen closely he may welcome you with his friendly "Oye Amigo" greeting! read more

Though this is not your authentic Mexican cuisine, it is oddly satisfying. I've have to admit I refused to go here based on reviews for months but gave in and gave it a whirl. When it is your first time they give you a sampler of their meats, beans, gravy. The gravy is a thick mixture kinda spicy but tasty. They have chicken breast, beef is mixed with a hash brown/potato thing, and chorizo. The price is great. I usually get the nachos with some gravy on the side. I've tried the chicken tacos - good a home cooking kinda taste. Based on reviews I feel that people love it or don't. It's worth a try - the cost is comparable to the amount of food you get. Great Mexican food! Love the enchiladas, buttered tortillas and gravy. Used to enjoy regularly from the 70's thru the 90's when I lived closer to what was Emilios. Still remember Emilio sitting in the old place, between Marshall and Battle Creek, in the kitchen that was open to the dining area stirring a pot of something. That awesome gravy? After he passed away Hoy Amigo's opened in Marshall with (what appeared to me) Emilio's menu and recipes. I now live over an hour away and make it a point to have lunch or dinner whenever I am passing near Marshall. Wish they'd expand into the South Haven area. I have gone here since I was very little. My whole family has always gone here and went to Emilio's before that. I stop in every time I'm in town from Colorado. It's definitely unique and is a spin off of an old restaurant called Emilio's from the 90s. It's the same menu, food, and workers too I think. I see all of the hateful reviews but keep an open mind. Some of the meals come with gravy or chili and they are delicious! Most of us get the avocado chalupa or tostada with gravy on the side. They serve a bunch of buttery tortillas to make tacos out of your food since they give giant portions. It's really delicious but definitely something I have never found any place else. We drive to Marshall every 2 to 3 weeks (90mi RT using $25 to $30 in gas for our car) just to go to OYE AMIGO. I discovered Emelio's in '85 and re-discovered it in 2019. The food is to die for, the staff welcomes you like family, typically remembering what you normally order to the last detail. Emelio's original recipes are prepared used and they are time tested and delicious. I remember him fondly as a friendly little man with a beautiful smile. I have traveled all over the world and had many excellent Mexican and TexMex meals and I still enjoy the beef enchilada, avacado chalupa and butter soaked tortillas at this downtown Marshall joint. I am not going to claim that the food is true Mexican fare (there are so many varieties) but I always enjoy my visits. The service is always friendly. I was in Marshall, MI for 10 days for work. My coworker and I decided to skip chow hall food one day and be adventurous by going into town to check out what mexican food would be like in a small town. What a BIG mistake that was. The place took only cash so between the two of us we had $12. I ordered a beef taco (around $4) and he ordered a beef burrito (around $5). The food came out topped with lettuce and cheese and it looked good until the first bite. I was like "uh oh". My gag reflex kicked in but I forced myself to swallow. The beef tasted like they poured a whole big bottle of liquid smoke or something into the mix. The beef mix didn't even looked normal and it was in some sort of green saucy concoction. I couldn't take a second bite and my coworker ate as much as he could then we paid and left. We drove to a nearby Arby's and washed the funky taste down with Arby's sauce. Besides from the funky beef, the waiter was very nice and friendly. He even offered a small sample of their food for us to try. Unfortunately, we didn't try the beef. The resaturant has loyal constumers who have been dining there for over 20 years saying that they have some of the best enchiladas. Simply great! If you don't like it it is because you don't understand true Mexican food. No canned beans, no red Spanish rice, no simple beef mixture. Oye has the best beans I have ever eaten. They are creamy and perfectly seasoned add cheese and you will have the best bean taco ever. Try the rice! It's spicy. Add their gravy to everything it is also spicy and rich. Love the enchiladas especially the cheese! Mexican pizza is amazing! I love this homey place. Great local flavor! read more

They do not take debit or credit cards!!!! I was a big fan of Emilio's and I had been wanting to try this. I had so many people told me not to, that I would not like it. They were right. The meat for tacos, enchiladas, burritos and such is 80% potato and 15% meat 5% other!!! I told them the meat was burnt and I was told it was smoked meat. I can tell the difference between smoked and burnt beyond recognition. I do not recommend the meat, yuck. Go to Don Pablo's instead. The chips here were hard and without flavor. The nachos ordered were enough to maybe feed a toddler. The waitress was nice and she didn't charge me for the bad enchiladas with the burnt taste. I feel bad writing this, but I need to be honest. My family has been eating this food since before I was born-- when it was Emilio's. If you're walking in expecting Taco Bell or chain Mexican crap, you're definitely not going to be happy. And that's ok, go somewhere else. This place is always full for good reason. It's delicious. While most of my family has moved out of state over the past decade, EVERY trip back requires a family dinner at Oye Amigos. Every. Single. Trip. The beans and tortillas can not be beat! This is the best restaurant on the planet. It's OK for those who don't agree: they simply need more time- and a bean chalupa, extra cheese, gravy, a few onions and root beer! The decor was plain but acceptable - like the local greasy spoon as another reviewer noted. Nothing here to turn me away. The friendliness of the staff would have likely kept me coming back. Then I tried the food. My wife and I stopped here after one of our monthly trips to Marshall. I found the dinner prices high, the a-la carte prices were a bit more appropriate. The lack of chips isn't a big deal for me as they serve buttered toritllas instead. I wish they had asked if we wanted butter - I would have rathered them without. I had the enchiladas; my wife had the burrito. We both were disappointed. The burrito was very bland according to her. The Enchilidas would have been acceptable accept that one bite was bland and the next was too spicy. Also the bean Enchilada was covered in refried beans and sauce. I have had Mexican cuisine in many forms, but they have something I have not experienced outside of Oye Amigos. Do not come here with expectations founded upon what you've had anywhere else. If you have experienced food with cilantro or queso cotija, please go to Battle Creek or Albion. Unless Mrs. Casarez is selling her homemade tamales on Michigan Avenue during a local festival, there is no Mexican food in Marshall. Oye Amigos is Tex-Mex at best, and not good Tex-Mex at that. I chose this place because it was on the Michigan best list. WRONG! I am not sure what kind of food the was. It kind of look like dog food. Everythjng ran together. Fantastic authentic Mexican style food. If it's your first time trying it out they have a tasting plate of a few different things they offer so you can get a feel of what you like. Highly recommend and the service is always great. Cash only however so you might need to duck into the atm next door beforehand. read more
