Perfect burrito, like the california burritos i reminisce about. Super fast served with a smile.

Chilangos, everybody raves about this place. And so here is my contrary review (informed by years of living in AZ and CA, and well, eating more than a little of this genre of food)... First of all: Confusing. You walk in the front door at corner of Mich. Ave. and Mechanic St. in downtown Jackson, and the place is a disheveled mess --- what normally would be a combined dining and serving area is a jumbled collection of storage and serving/front of house items. It looks abandoned or just not open. Confusing and unprofessional. Next: You walk back to the side door area; this is where the food action is at, but only one (surly) employee is there to help you (to order and build/serve) the somewhat appetizing array of meats, veggies, toppings, and sauces. However, it does not smell good (or any way at all) like a facility of this quality and type of food should -- it should smell like pepper and spices and fresh ingredients. Outside there are three lime green picnic tables that are filthy. 3 other employees are loitering out there -- not saying hello or making any effort to offer normal professional restaurant hospitality to paying customers. Also, the 3 did not go back inside, to help the one buffet employee to serve food, when a small line of customers (3-4) queued up inside. You have to pay .25 cents for a cup of water. There are no utensils (the dispenser is out). There are only napkins. A bum is pacing in front of the front door, he now slides into the side door and awaits his food, because you (me) stupidly promised to buy him a taco. The 3 employees outside don't care, and keep chatting away, eating pistachios and ignoring both guests and their peer-worker. Then there's the food itself: I ordered a small Chorizo and Potato taco -- I tried to request certain toppings ('con ensalada, tomates, queso') but the guy was like: 'I don't understand you.' He corrected my Spanish in a snarky way, telling me he thought I meant 2 tacos; (he corrected: 'lechuga, tomate, cebolla, avocate'... etc.). Instead of being a pleasant exchange with a customer, it was awkward. The taco was tasteless-- which is weird because chorizo is normally nice and seasoned. It was also terribly small, but for around $4.00 I guess it was average. My son got a burrito that was very wet and falling apart -- again no fork/knife to eat it with so a big sloppy mess. He said it was okay in terms of freshness and taste -- about a 4 out of 10. It cost about $12.00. The homeless guy did not offer any comments on the taste or quality of his food -- so IDK what he thought. In all, I just wish D/T Jax had a Quality Dairy -- a simple store to go into to get a fountain drink (Coke) and a bag of chips and maybe a sandwich. You can skip Chilangos -- go to the Hot Dog place for a Coney, or the Dirty Bird for fried dill pickles -- better food, better service, better environment. read more

I've been here a few times and I'm always happy with my selection! I love Mexican food but am cursed with the heat tolerance of a toddler, so this limits my options. The staff is super friendly and helpful! They are happy to walk me through the process, explaining the heat levels of everything I ask about, and often make suggestions. Awesome veggie (vegan) burrito bowl. The cook was nice enough to grill some fresh onion, green pepper, and tomatoes for me. Fresh rice, refried black beans, cilantro, and guacamole to top it all. I was in Jackson to visit one of my friend and he suggested this place for dinner. This place is in downtown jackson and there is plenty of parking everywhere. We wanted to get a burrito but, they were out of tortilla so we ended up getting a burrito bowl. We got chicken as meat and the meat was tender snd succulent. Overall, I enjoyed the food. Some of my complaints about this place is lack of up keep. The place you order the food kind of looks dirty and you can see things scattered all of the cooking area. Then in the dining area we had to switch tables 3 times. First one was wobbling and second was really stickey. Napkins actually stuck to the table. And the third table was less stickey. This restaurant has a lot of potential if the put some effort. read more

The best Mexican you can get in Jackson! Apparently Chilango is slang for a person from Mexico City. It's sad they had to shut down the original Chilango's restaurant, which was the best restaurant in Jackson as far as I was concerned, but at least we still have this little piece of deliciousness! And it's right downtown. They're really environmentally-friendly in all the packaging they use, too. Definitely worth every penny. read more

"Eat like a Mexican!" That's what the t-shirt said when I walked in. Actually I was looking for Chilango's Chop House because I was in the mood for a salad, but I accidentally walked into a burrito bar, and me being from San Diego can't pass up a good burrito. This place definitely has a hole-in-the-wall feel which was perfect for me. I LOVE surf n turf burritos and I saw the cook making fresh carne asada. When I asked if he could add shrimp thankfully he prepared a fresh batch for the burrito. I added guacamole, salsa, pico, cilantro, and a little chipotle cream sauce. There was no dining in so I had to eat in my car during my lunch break. It was good, messy, and I needed extra napkins. I am so upset that I didn't take a picture. I figured that I would take a picture on my next visit. That's where the three stars come in. On my next visit it was a little different. The different meats were cooked and in bins kind of Chipotle style which was fine, but when I requested to have shrimp added to my burrito they said that they were out of shrimp. I get that they could be out of shrimp that day, but the cook said that they may not be getting any more for a while. It was Saturday April 25 and I was leaving on the following Tuesday, so I was disappointed that I would not be able to relive the feeling of experiencing one of the most delicious mar y tierra aka surf n turf burritos that I have ever had. I still ordered a carne asada burrito, but it just wasn't the same. read more

Usually this place is great but today I had a less than perfect experience. The food was still great but staff were totally rude to me. Also you need a new way to do your mobile orders. When I select a time online I plan on the food being ready when I get there at that time instead of the food being started at that time. So ridiculously good & super filling. I've tried both a burrito and nachos. The barbacoa (slow cooked beef) is so juicy and delicious. The ingredients are so fresh! The chips are often fried to order and the burrito and quesadilla dough are rolled flat and cooked on the grill to order. The kids meal is a great deal for $5.50. A quesadilla plus your choice of chips and cheese or salsa or rice and beans with a juice box. Also, be sure to download the Perka app and use it each visit to earn points toward free food. The only thing that tasted like homemade Mexican food was the rice, and even that was lacking salt/flavor. The lettuce was fresh but everything all together had no taste. My boyfriend and I only ate the food because we were really hungry and the place looked clean. This just looked like a "wanna be Chipotle". This is the worst Mexican food I've every had. The food was BLAND. Not just bland, but Michigan bland (you know the people who find ketchup spicy). I came for the barbacoa and I was hugely disappointed. It was dry, tough, and had absolutely no flavor. I didn't know it was even possible to make barbacoa dry and tough. I took my first bite and wished I had decided to drive the extra distance and gone to El Oasis. The tortillas for their burritos are made fresh for you. And the steak Carne Asada is the best!! My dad enjoys their Chile Verde. My favorite burrito is mixing the Carne Asada and the chorizo with papas and then adding all the condiments you want. All their condiments are always fresh. The service is great too. I had a burrito bowl with the pork chile verde, queso cheese, veggies, and guacamole. It was very good, and enough for a filling lunch and leftovers for a snack later. It I lived in Jackson, I'd be a regular here. Pros: The flavors overall were far better than Chipotle or Qdoba. The pork chile verde was moderately spicy, and the queso was very tasty. Cons: The guacamole - it was far too pureed and had a strange taste. The dining area is a bit small, so arrive early if you'd like a seat. read more

Out-of-Towners, this place is straight fire! I stopped in to check it out as there was no nearby Chipotle, my stand by for quick, quality "Faux Mex." I'm elated there was no Chipotle nearby, because the food here is slightly more authentic, and absolutely more flavorful. The food was very fresh and flavorful. I had the chicken bowl, and I loved the Spanish Rice. I recommend the pico and habanero salsas. Also, the lettuce and corn add great texture. First impression is that this places looks like it will be good. Second impression is neat, they press their own tortillas. Third impression is wow, this place is great. I had The Hulk burrito and added guacamole. The Chili Verde was great, very tender and flavorful. The habanero sauce was really spicy without being flamethrower hot. The cilantro and rice rounded this out nicely providing nice subtle flavor. Skip Chipotle and Qdoba! Chilangos burrito bar uses ingredients that are fresh and delicious. I love it that this small place has a wide variety of sauces and other toppings, including queso. While the $9 burrito may seem like a lot of money, the quality of the food is definitely worth the price! After reading some of the other reviews, I do agree that the tortilla itself is not the most chewable and I often struggled to bite into it completely. Also, prepare for your burrito to be messy. So definitely have a plate and plenty of napkins! We were making a trip to Menard's and stopped in downtown Jackson to check out this Burrito Bar. This place is like a Mexican Subway sandwich shop- start with your tortilla and build from there. Tortillas are made to order- flattened from a ball of dough before your eyes, then grilled to a slight char, but still pliable thanks to the 400-degree tortilla press. My wife and I both went with the Tingu Chicken- a mildly spicy shredded chicken- and customized it from there with a variety of ingredients including lettuce, tomato, onions, beans, rice, cheese sauce, jalapeno, sour cream, pico, guac, salsa and dressing. It was delicious! This business is on the corner of a block that includes Spring Arbor's Jackson campus, but at around $10 per person, it's a little pricey for students. I can see customizing an overstuffed burrito that becomes two meals, though. Salsa and chips were $2.75 and were nothing special, considering that Mexican restaurants usually offer this appetizer for free and use higher quality salsa. The chips were very crispy and flavorful, though. I'd skip them and just load the burrito up a little bit more. read more

I visited this restaurant while in Jackson for work and since it was a quick walk downtown and was recommended by others, I decided to try it out. BIG MISTAKE. When I first sat down with my burrito bowl I noticed it was soggy sort of?? and just overall not very appealing. I had the chicken. I ate about a quarter of the bowl before I just didn't have the desire to try any more of it. Within an hour and a half of eating the burrito bowl I was hunched over in pain and had the sweats. I'm sure you can put together what happened after that painful stomach ache and hot flash. Overall, this place was pretty dingy looking where the food is set up and having an "emergency" just isn't worth me trying this place ever again or ever recommending it to anyone else who doesn't want to experience tummy troubles.
