I can read for miles....
Simone F.

It's too easy to love the people and places that love books. Though I have visited this branch precisely one time, I think it will be especially easy to love the Oxnard Library. Is it perfection? No, it could be brighter. I suppose skylights would be an extreme ask. But, this library is big! Bookshelves and special rooms seem to stretch for miles. Palm trees out the windows sway all the way toward the coast. I phoned ahead and with the expectation that my request for one-on-one computer tutoring would yield better results. (An underappreciated offering on my old neighborhood library's calendar. I just didn't need such help when I lived there, but now, with my move, my master's degree, and some publishing creds under my belt--or in my files, as it were-- I need some serious documentation organization.) So, with no one to guide me from over my shoulder, what's the next best thing? Three computer-y reference books pulled from the stacks 'specially for me--rubber-banded and ready two days after my call--and an offer that I could also pull a librarian over for a quick one-on-one question. Turns out, I didn't need it this time. Nice to know that help is there though. I was given a free hot spot to use, since the wi-fi was down, and a study room. I didn't even know I needed all that. Another best part about my experience is that not one of those lovely librarian ladies ever seemed too busy to help me. They served everyone efficiently, patiently, and it all left me wondering: Can't every government office function as smoothly as the library? Maybe it's because well-read people are educated and capable people, so the odds of "customer" satisfaction may naturally be higher in a library. That's my deduction, at least. Makes my tsk tsk of those crazy book-banning Red States even shriller. We need to address those chairs though. With their unforgiving bucketing and high-back wood slates, they reminded me of my 1920s grandparents' house with the 1950s farm-déco dining set, and I'm not fondly reminiscing here. Yikes. Someone donate some padding already!

At Oxnard College, I studied ESL (English as a second language). In general, the buildings are…read morebeautiful and the classrooms are well-equipped. The library provides free books and iPads for students. ‼However, opinions about the teachers vary. I have never encountered a worse teacher than German Bermudez! He is very arrogant, unfriendly, and the atmosphere in his class is always tense! He speaks with a strong Latin accent, and he never explains new words. He always speaks quickly, and he gives strict deadlines for homework that you can't complete (on an iPad), which other teachers don't do. As I was informed, he used to be a student and now he's a tutor, which is why he has a sense of grandeur. I am very disappointed that the college doesn't have control over who they hire... Additionally, I would like to recognize the most excellent teacher in this college, Patricia Viveros! She always smiles, jokes with her students, and is very helpful in explaining new words!‍‍ Her lessons are easy and fun, and the atmosphere is friendly! She is a great teacher with a lot of experience and a kind heart! Her teaching methods make it easy to understand and learn English! I would recommend her as the best teacher in California!

I love that you can request books online and easily pick them up here- or if the library doesn't have the book you want, they will purchase it and mail it to your home. Extremely nice library manager. Books were in great condition. One thing I didn't like was the parking lot. We were there during the day and there were some very scary people hanging out with off leash pitbulls. One lady tried to approach us (she seemed to be on drugs based on her behaviors), but luckily decided to go the other direction. I did not feel safe with my son walking the short distance to my car with people sleeping in their cars while their off leash dogs were running around the parking lot. The library has a security guard, but he only stayed inside the library. He needs to be patrolling the parking lot and front entrance as well, or at least watch to make sure young children get in and out of the library safely. We will return, but the other locations don't seem to have this safety issue. I hope the library looks into this.
