We were looking for a quick lunch. Dropped in about 1P and found the place pretty busy. It's small, but friendly. We decided to go with the special ... egg sandwich and beef dumpling soup. It's was just like what your mother makes. Egg sandwich with modest mayo on wheat bread. Egg spread was perfectly prepared. Soup was devine. Wifey donated her dumplings to me. The crowd was all locals who probably went there daily. Diner style with table service was refreshing. Our server worked at the Owl over 60 years. Her son was working the grill. We had a fun conversation about some of the equipment sitting out ... old malt makers, etc. Fun time, good memories and a solid meal. Not fancy, just good food and friendly service. There aren't too many ma n' pa type of cafes left, but this happens to be one of the best. I'm pretty sure the crowd is the same group of people for years now, but I see why. It's pretty small, but the food is great. You can sit, sip coffee, and chat with the old-time locals. Even our 7 year old daughter likes to go with Daddy just because it's so cool. read more

I wish I could comment on the food, but we didn't stay long enough to eat. We opened the door and find the tiniest sitting area I've ever seen. I think the door bumped a table on the way in. Everyone just stared at us like we were purple pumkin people eaters as we shifted between crunched seating. We sat down, no servers...no decorations...no windows...just 4 plain walls and a bunch of people stuffed in like sardines...couldn't even really smell the food. Maybe it's a good little spot for locals, but we left feeling like Platteville could use a nice local front street diner with an open, warm and welcoming breakfast and lunch spot. It's small, yes, tiny in fact. There was no one immediately there because she was getting others orders. But the food was FANTASTIC! There's a few restaurants in Milwaukee that her son could teach how to cook hash browns. They were perfect, as was the bacon and eggs. This place is old school. Come in, sit down and eat. It's perfect. If you're going to be a douche and put them down because of size, don't bother staying. Leave this place to those who love food and are smart enough to trust the locals. I went into the restaurant at 11:10 and the woman at the counter rudely told me that they were no longer serving breakfast but that she couldn't take my lunch order until 11:30. I didn't want to sit at the counter for 20 minutes before I could order, so I left. The restaurant was not empty- there were plenty of people eating who apparently had ordered before the meal dead zone. Never had this experience before in my life and won't be coming back. read more

Came upon this gem while motorcycling through Southern Wisconsin. A small cafe, with a lot of hometown. I had the Sourdough breakfast sandwich, which was incredible! Grilled to perfection, loaded with REAL bacon, eggs and cheese. I don't think I ever had such a tasty sandwich. My buddy had one of the breakfast plates. The portions were large, (almost to much,,,but it was so good). I must say I was sliding my fork towards his hashbrowns, they looked, and after some persuasion tasted delicious. Mom is waitressing and the son is cooking. Lots of hometown chatter and great information for the area. Stop by, you will be pleased! read more
