I went for "The Best Ever" Roastbeef sandwich and the name did not deceive. The beef was amazing and they did not skimp on the portion. Service was quick and the food arrived piping hot after a short wait. Presentation was first class, and the food delicious. The steak in my baguette was flavoursome, tender and lean. The generous helping of steak was stuffed in the philly cheese -lined crusty baguette and served with salad and fries. Excellent value for money. It was the extra touches that made my Bar 91 review 5* instead of 4* one. A small but notable example being when I asked for a glass of tap water, it was served with ice and a wedge each of lime and lemon. And when a larger table came available, the staff asked if we'd like to move from our stool-seated bar - we stayed put, but it was great customer service. Looking forward to eating here again - the prices are excellent for the Merchant City, and quality is first class. So, now it's on my food-places list as well as drink-places. Yay!

The Admiral has the feel of an old man pub, with the clientele of a generally much younger work crowd but it's always pretty busy, down in part to the sports they play and the reasonable-for-city-centre prices. Even though we hadn't booked, we were able to get a table with no waiting time - despite a particularly busy lunchtime - and quickly ordered our food. Given that we were eating over a work lunch time, it's pretty important to get the food quickly to make sure we weren't running late for getting back to work. I opted for the baked potato with chilli, cheese and sour cream. It came with a side salad and for £5.50 it was a really substantial portion. I can't eat food which is too spicy but the chilli was just on the right level of heat for me, yet the potato under was a bit hard until I managed to mash it up a little bit - I always wonder why they don't do that before serving, maybe it's just me... My lunch was tasty enough, the staff are always friendly and welcoming and the food comes out reasonably quickly. It's fairly standard pub-grub and I'll definitely be back for lunch, I just don't think it'd be my first choice - not when I have so many other options close by.

We popped in on a Thursday night to grab a 2-4-1 pizza and were surprised to see how big it is. The place was pretty busy for a Thursday night, but we were able to find a nice little booth at the back, away from the hubbub at the bar. The football was on, so it was a little rowdier than other places I have been to recently, but it was no biggie. The menu offers the usual burgers/pizzas, but they have taken the move to step away from your bog standard offerings. I opted for the Big Stink, which was big and stinky, and Gem got the Straight and Narrow (sans onions). Now, this might be a small thing, but it is always gonna get a thumbs up from me if you SLICE THE BLOODY PIZZA. Seriously, you're supposed to use your hands, so kudos to The Admiral for saving me the hassle of having to try and cut it with a knife #firstworldproblems The pizza base nice and crispy, the toppings were good quality and it all tasted fantastic. We were also pleasantly surprised by the bill, which came in at just under £17 including two soft drinks and a portion of chips (which didn't get finished because we are terrible at portion control). I'd never been before, but it will certainly be on my list whenever I am in town. A thumbs up from me.

I'm grateful for having Blackfriars pop my steak pie cherry. They did it with the most moist, tender meat topped with flaky crust that's just begging to soak up all the savory sauce. The side of chips it came with certainly didn't hurt... Then there's the obscure (to me) beer selection. I'm still getting to learn about brews on this side of the pond, and was quite pleased with the pint of Cairngorm Black Gold I sampled. One could get quite an education on ales with all the options on tap at Blackfriars. Other yelpers have noted how busy it gets in here, but that was counter to my own experience. Perhaps the mid-afternoon timing of our visit played to our favor. Other than the large table of businessmen in the corner, I think we might have been the only other party there. It might only be 1500 here, but it's gotta be happy hour -somewhere-!
