Over the years, I've tried everything--Advil, Tiger Balm, PT exercises, and I've even been seeing chiropractors regularly since the accident. But nothing brought lasting relief, until I started seeing Dr. Lois Shaiken. From the beginning, she listened carefully to my specific concerns and created a personalized treatment plan tailored to my body and lifestyle. For the first time in years, I'm not constantly reaching for pain relievers or balms--I'm finally experiencing real, long-term relief. What really sets Dr. Shaiken apart is her thoughtful, individualized approach. When I felt like I was coming down with a virus, she gave me a targeted adjustment that noticeably improved my symptoms. She even provides specific adjustments to help ease discomfort during my menstrual cycle--something no other chiropractor has ever addressed for me. Dr. Shaiken's care has been transformative, and I'm so grateful to have found her.

At that time, I was looking for a holistic way to treat skin problems and digestion issues, but what I didn't expect, was the additional calming of my "fight or flight" adrenal response that had been on overdrive since I started graduate school. Acupuncture, skillfully practiced by Lauren, has helped me to slow down, process, and reset. Taking this time for myself has allowed me to feel more energized, empathic, and prepared to take on life's challenges. I greatly appreciate Lauren's therapeutic demeanor and vast knowledge of the mind and body connection. Even as a nurse, I have learned so much about my own physiology through bi-weekly sessions with Lauren. She takes the time to truly listen, assess, educate, and treat whatever my particularly ailments are, and I leave her peaceful studio feeling restored. I can't say enough about Lauren and her practice, and I am so glad that I decided to make acupuncture with her a part of my wellness routine.

I presented with a myriad of seemingly bizarre symptoms that had Kaiser ineffectually shrugging its shoulders. Dr. Lani ordered a blood test that confirmed her diagnosis of a fairly rare thyroid condition. Western medicine literally has no way to treat this condition. I am stronger and faster today than I have ever been. I feel amazing! I paid out of pocket for my care with Dr. Lani, and did so happily. There is no better investment one can make than in excellent health care. And, I didn't have to battle a mega medical corporation to get better.

Dr. Lani is better informed about these issues than most MD's, except maybe those who specialize in the areas she does. Her mentor and one of the many MD's who respect her and *refer their patients to her* is Claude Arnaud, MD, the foremost medical specialist on osteoporosis. Another thing I appreciate about Dr. Lani (and why I trust her) is that she takes a very balanced, down-to-earth perspective on alternative and conventional medicine. She cautions patients against believing overblown claims that alternative treatments can "cure" them. She acknowledges that conventional medicine is important too. She doesn't advocate that her patients to avoid conventional western medical doctors, she advocates that they make sure they find *informed* ones who know how to help them. Doctor Lani has been *training medical doctors* on the various subjects of her areas of expertise for years. She knows her stuff, she's dedicated to helping people get the right diagnoses and treatments for their *individual cases.* If you are having bone health issues, I strongly recommend seeing her *in conjunction with your doctor.* If you can't make an appointment, you can still read her book, which is very informative.

I wondered if I was too sensitive and I often had trouble incorporating the work in a way that supported my life. Debra Sue has changed that. I stuck with her and she stuck with me and my recent treatment with her has really revolutionized my experience with and feelings about acupuncture. A few weeks ago, I got a horrible case of sciatica (a recurrence) several people recommended acupuncture and I had been considering scheduling with Debra Sue again, so I went for it. Since the session (about a week and a half ago), my pain has been dramatically reduced (especially at night, when it was the worst) and my sleep has improved a lot. Emotionally, I have also been feeling happy and strong, which is very different, since I was feeling depressed and fragile before. I actually couldn't believe how well it worked for me, I have never experienced anything like it. I am a massage therapist, so my bias has always been to get massage for pain, but now I see the difference that acupuncture can make. Okay, well that is kind of a plug for acupuncture, in general, but I also want to give big kudos to Debra Sue, because I am not sure if I could have had such an experience with someone else. I believe that I am not the easiest client. By the time I get acupuncture, I am in such dire need that it is tough to bring me to a better place. Debra Sue has really worked to cater her work specifically to my needs. Additionally, Debra Sue has had to go over and above in my intakes because I have gone so long in between my sessions with her. Each time I see her, she carefully records everything that I say to her and she refers to those notes later. She remembers the things that I struggle with and often-times really relates to them, too. She is kind and patient and generous in her practice. She works in the most beautiful and relaxing space. Seriously, it is probably the most gorgeous acupuncture office that you will ever see. She offers very high quality supplements and stays networked and current on issues like menopause and cancer. She is just really good at what she does and I couldn't recommend her more highly.

Working with Dr Alfonsi on my posture and strength due to ongoing lower back pain, eventually we got to a point where she said "You've done everything right, you're strong enough, if you still feel sore maybe you need a new mattress". I really loved my comfy mattress so I wasn't keen to change it, but I happened to house sit for a week for some friends - and I had *no back pain* while sleeping on their new mattress. So I checked exactly what mattress that was and got the same one for myself at home. Problem completely solved! Dr Alfonsi is honest, kind, competent, and knowledgeable and I gladly refer anyone I know who needs physical therapy to her. Original review follows: Dr Alfonsi is absolutely wonderful. I have previously been to two different physical therapists who were fantastic and an excellent chiropractor. So I didn't really need a new referral, but I had a new-to-me condition begin about four months ago, and the doctor I was seeing for it said that his patients with similar issues had had good success with Dr Alfonsi. So I went to see her, and I'm so glad I did!! She incorporates many different practices and capabilities for a full healing treatment. I can still remember the first visit, when she incorporated energy work. I've done only a little bit of energy work in the past so it took me a moment to realize what was happening, and it was just *amazing* and so very much what my body needed. I realized that part of what was going on with my body was my electrical systems being out of whack, which was showing up in a number of ways, and no other physical therapist or chiropractor had ever done energy work with me. I have a ruptured disk in my neck and moderate to severe narrowing in my spine, so usually those get the focus. But a visit with Dr Alfonsi provides a wide range of healing treatment, leaving me refreshed and more comfortable immediately. We quickly were able to transition from twice a week to once a week to every 10 days to now every other week. The issues I initially went to see her for are now completely resolved, and we're now working on continuing to improve my posture and strength to help me eliminate residual pain from the long-term spinal issues. In addition to the wonderful in person treatments, Dr Alfonsi instructs me in several exercises I do at home. She does a great job of explaining where I'm at now and how we'll get to where I want to be. Another thing I want to mention is one of the most important. With Dr Alfonsi I really feel *seen*, and respected and appreciated as a whole person. I am always a bit nervous going into a relationship with someone who is an expert with bodies. I've never had a particularly good relationship with my own body. Dr Alfonsi never makes me feel ashamed of this. Not that anyone else ever did, but with Dr Alfonsi it's actively the opposite. She makes me feel like it's totally OK - whatever my history and reasons for being how I am - I don't even have to go into them. I just know it's OK to be where I'm at, and she helps me get better, experience less pain, and get stronger and learn how to keep my body pain (and numbness) free going forward. I also want to mention - despite the pandemic that is ongoing and quite a bit of an issue in SF right now - I feel VERY safe visiting Dr Alfonsi. She is incredibly safe and thorough. It's just her at her office - there are literally no other people to interact with. Mask wearing is mandatory. She checks your temperature before you enter and you leave your shoes at the door. She wipes down everything between patients. She always wears mask & gloves. Payment is contactless. There's a big container of hand sanitizer. I feel she takes safety seriously and would not cause me to take any more risk than is absolutely necessary in doing an in-person visit like this.

I was hesitant to go to a chiropractor, just because I was a little freaked out about someone cracking my bones (especially my neck). The first appointment is a thorough consultation. Dr. Alfonsi wanted to get to know me, my health history, family's health history, and what I was trying to get out of going to a chiropractor. She was very educational, informative, and understanding. She took it easy on me for the first "crack" and we progressed after I got comfortable with the routine. This was back in 2021. It's currently 2023 and I haven't had a migraine since. I've been going to Dr. Alfonsi regularly at least once to twice a month (not just for migraines). She has helped me with digestion problems, major back pain, as well as hip and leg pain. I trust her more than my general doctor to help treat me. It's definitely an investment, but I rather feel good than spending days in and out of hospitals and taking a bunch of medications.

The Groupon indicated an adjustment was included and that the doctor would direct the massage therapist where to massage. The consultation was short (about five minutes) and there was no adjustment. The doctor told my hubby to come back for an hour of diagnostic tests and said it was included in the Groupon. Clearly, the Groupon did not state that there would be multiple visits and that different appointments would have to be made. It was more investment of time than my husband had signed up for. He did get a massage, a specific kind that centered on the stomach but I am not sure how much of the massage was directed by the doctor's consultation. The review is for the massage only since my husband actually never received any chiropractic treatment.
