My child attended the drama program at Ovation last year. I want to acknowledge that they had a great teacher, and Bonnie, one of the directors, was very supportive. The school often speaks about supporting children's growth, not only as performers but also as respectful human beings, which was one of the reasons we chose this program.
After the drama class ended, I contacted the school to inquire about tap dancing classes. When I learned that the cost was close to 2,000 dollars per year, I spoke with Chris, another director, and explained that the program was unfortunately beyond our family's budget. While we were interested, we could not proceed with registration due to the cost. What happened next was shocking and deeply disappointing. After declining registration, I received an email that said "Your registration for Tap dance- level 2/3 (my child's name) has been cancelled and below it included the phrase "cheap parents." As a parent, I found this disrespectful, unprofessional, and completely inconsistent with the values that the school publicly promotes.
When I raised the issue with Chris, I was told that it was an IT error. However, regardless of the explanation, the experience left me feeling insulted and unwelcome. No parent should have to receive communication like that from an educational organization.
The most concerning part is that this was not a comment I heard through rumours or behind closed doors. It appeared directly in communication sent to me. For a school that emphasizes respect, character development, and positive relationships, this experience was unacceptable.
Parents deserve to be treated with courtesy and professionalism, regardless of whether they can afford every program being offered. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this centre.
read more
