My wife and I took a private lesson on Sunday with Scott and we thought it was a fantastic experience! 1. He came in on a Sunday and 2. he perfectly balanced my (naive) ambition for bigger waves with my wife's hesitation from never being in the ocean before. Taking a 2-hour group lesson with Outrageous Surf was one of the best decisions we made during our trip to Hawaii. They "guarantee you'll stand up during your first lesson", but I was very skeptical. But I was proven totally wrong! Everyone in our 4-person group stood up and had some decent runs too! It was such a blast, the time just FLEW by. And judging how my arms felt the next day (very sore) I can see why surfers are in very good shape. Also, we decided to pay the $25 for a photo CD with 50 pictures of my husband and I standing up on the board. It's unlikely we'll ever get another chance for that! read more

Loved this place. My husband and I signed up for semi private lessons. The owners are super friendly and helpful. A local guy, Mike, was assigned as our instructor and did a great job coaching and finding us nice waves. I would highly recommend taking lessons even if you're athletic. They also take pictures so you can prove to your friends back home that you surfed in Hawaii! They supply all the Gear you'll need. read more

Best Surf lesson! My girlfriend and I had our surf lesson with Scott. He was just great, he teach us the basics and then he helped us to catch a lot of waves. Visiting Maui on vacation, my 9 year old and 12 year old wanted to take surf lessons while we were here. My 9 year old was SO EXCITED to go and my 12 year old (daughter) was a bit uneasy. We showed up at 7:30 as instructed and met with our instructor, Benson. From the start he was so nice and patient. He was thorough and made the kids feel at ease. "Surfing made easy..." First of all, funny instructors, you're here to have fun and they want to make sure you do. Second, the Crocs shoes they make you wear are the closest thing to birth control you can wear on the beach since they are ugly as sin, but the serve and IMPORTANT purpose with all that rock and coral. Third, the most in-athletic of the bunch can easily surf here, the waves are great and provide many levels of challenges for newbies. Forth, the DVD they sell of the images at the end is reasonably priced and well worth the expense to have these kind of memories. Fifth, they WANT you to surf, you're in a class of 12-14 but they learn each on of your names, encourage you and will call you back to redo until you get it. We were up on our first try, and fell no more than twice the entire 2 hour class. They took a sport we never thought we could do and made it easy. We loved every moment of it :) read more

These people are amazing!!! I've always wanted to try surfing, but I'm not the strongest swimmer and I've always been a little wary. However, this winter break, I came to Hawaii and decided I would conquer my fears. AND IT WAS AWESOME. I signed up for a lesson as a shore excursion through my cruise (Norwegian Pride of America) and had no idea what to expect. Best case scenario, I would stand up a couple times, worst case scenario, I would wipe out and never want to do it again. Either way, I would leave with #noragrets. Outrageous exceeded my expectations. Again, this was my first time so I didn't have anybody to compare them to, but they were friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. The tour bus dropped off the entire cruise group in the middle of Lahaina, and we awkwardly stood there for a bit before this very nice lady came and walked us to the store. It was a very small room, and the group was fairly large (about 15 people), so it did get a little bit crowded. I was standing all by myself in the corner, but the nice lady saw me and quickly grabbed me a rashquard and reef shoes that fit. These were provided free of charge, and were lifesavers during our lesson. She also reminded me to put on sunscreen, which I had forgotten to bring, and directed me to their communal shelf of sunscreen. After everybody had suited up, we headed outside and walked a short distance to the breakwall. Thankfully, the surfboards were transported for us, so we didn't have to carry them all that way. Once we got to the beach, we did have to wait a few minutes for all the boards to be brought out. When the boards had all arrived, they were laid out in a row, and the instructors assigned us to certain boards according to our size. We were given a quick land lesson and taught the basics: standing up, positioning, and posture. Then, it was off into the water! We paddled out a couple hundred feet, to an area with water a little higher than waist deep. If you haven't surfed before, you will have two big problems: your arms will get tired super fast, and you wont have any clue how to steer your board away from other people. When your arms get tired, it's a lot easier to just jump down and walk your board back out. However, this is a lot harder to do when the bottom is very rocky. This is where the reef shoes came in super handy. With the reef shoes, I could walk back out a good distance without my feet hurting. Also, when I couldn't figure out how to paddle to turn my board back towards the shore, I could just jump down and turn the board around. These shoes also do a great job of protecting your feet when you fall. With them on, you don't have to worry about your feet being gouged by the rocks. Once everybody in the group and all the instructors had arrived, the instructors started calling people out to them. We had 5 instructors for our group of about 15: KC, Benny, Braiden, Dylan, and Scott, the owner himself. You would paddle out to one of them, and then wait for a wave, then at just the right time, the instructor would give you a giant push and you would have to stand up on your own. I was a little terrified, but there was an older lady who was brave enough to go first and stood up on her first try! We were in the water for about two hours. Every single person in the group stood up on their board multiple times, and we got tons of turns. The instructors were all staggered out in different locations with varying difficulties; if you were more adventurous, you could go farther out, but if you were a little scared, you could stay closer to the shore. Everybody had a ton of fun and we were all exhausted (in a good way) after the session! In addition to having a great experience, I got to take home some pictures as a souvenir! Scott charges just $10 for a CD with a ton of pictures on it, which is great because when you are out there you can't really take your own pictures. These weren't professional quality, but they were definitely worth it. Most tourist attractions will charge you $$$ for one or two prints, but you get all of them, on a CD, for your own use! The only drawback to this place is that they only take cash, but Scott is very understanding and will direct you to an ATM close by. All in all, a great experience! Thanks Outrageous! read more

My friend and I took an early morning surf lesson at Outrageous Surf. The staff is professional and very friendly. We ended up in a group lesson, but did not have any other people join so we ended up with the instructor to ourselves. The instructor was very informative, nice, and professional. We also had the owner, Scott take pictures of us surfing for $10 per person. From my research this place definitely is least expensive at $50 per person for a group lesson and it was worth every penny as the quality of service is really great. Loved our family's experience with Scott, Dana and Casey for our family surf lesson. They took great care of our kids - ages 5 and 8 - and made surfers out of all of us! While being in the water and surfing was fun, our instructors left us on the beach and were lounging about when we finally found our way back. During the lesson we barely got any advice and we left to figure it out ourselves. We tried to express our concerns to the very nice lady who owned the store but were berated by her husband and chased out of the store. Their attitudes were 'better than thou' and failed to teach us anything. Yelling at customers and getting your staff to clap for you as you yell at young women is bad for business read more

We surfed with Benny. He is not very talkative so we were a little apprehensive about getting started. The owner said he would take pictures of us for an additional $40 (4 people in our party) but the disk he gave was blank. We have contacted them several times to no avail of getting pictures. They only take cash so it seems we are out $40. If you use this outfit, don't pay for pictures as it is a scam. read more

Willie was our instructor. He was a great teacher and we all got up on our first try. We were very nervous about surfing because in our group some of us had never surfed and some of us had done a lessons when we were kids but didn't have a positive experience at that time. But this lesson was 100% awesome and I credit it all to Willie. I stood up and surfed all the way to the beach on most tries! I only plopped off once. Lol First he taught us a 5 step process to stand and had us practice while we were on the land. Then he took us out to where it looked like a number of surf schools were at "the break wall" on the south end of Front Street. There were only 4 of us in the class with Willie so he would call us over about two at a time and help us catch waves (give us a push when the time was right!) the waves were slow and long so it was pretty easy to get on them with his help and we got to ride them for a good distance before we got to shore. We paid 10 bucks extra per person and the owner of the surf school stood on the beach and took pictures of us with a long lens and put them on a cd. They were good pics! I recommend it. If someone wants to watch you surf then know that they could go to that little area and watch you too. The area everyone was surfing at "the break wall" is shallow so though it looks like everyone is really far out in the ocean they are actually just standing up. Your feet touch the bottom easy so it is not scary at all. They supply you with surf shoes and rash guards. Willie was a local guy who knew everyone as we were walking down the street to the beach. He was very funny and attentive. He really enjoys teaching others and we were grateful that we got him as an instructor and had such a great time. Before we booked with this surf school we had called around to others and other schools where either way more expensive or somewhat comparable in price but booked (we paid 50 per person plus the optional additional 10 bucks for the pictures). When we were out at the break wall we saw the other surf schools (one in particular who I won't name in this review) and the instructors from the other schools had huge groups and weren't even helping them! It was so sad! We were having an awesome time riding wave after wave and the other group was standing around looking confused and tired with no help!! Normally I wouldn't mention another company in this review like that but it really made us appreciate Willie even more!! I totally recommend this place and ask for Willie!!!! read more
