If you are a lover of the spirits, this is a great stop on your visit to Phoenix or for a fun date night if you live in the area. My tour was a bit muddied by a birthday party that was taking place and they added a few other groups to the same tour. I believe this dynamic changed the vibe as the group was quite large and... vocal. With that being said, we walked in and were able to join a tour right away, but I recommend you scheduling and asking if there are any large parties. The distillery area is small, but has the machines you want to see and the your guide/owner is very passionate. That's what makes it interesting. You get to taste a variety of spirits as the guide describes the process of how they're made. They make a point of introducing themselves to everyone who walks in the door (even when they are slammed) 4. They are extremely transparent about how their products are sourced and made 5. I don't like spirits. I went here to get my brother a bottle of bourbon. Ended up taking the tour with the tasting of a few of what this place has to offer. Delicious. I don't like vodka and I really am not a whiskey person, but this stuff is so smooth. Our tour guide was super knowledgeable and very obviously enthusiastic about his craft. Got to taste some gin, rum, agave (tequila), and whiskey. Outside of the tour I had an old fashioned, and two other drinks with gin in it that I cannot remember (haha) and I enjoyed them all. I am all about supporting local businesses, Ma and Pa joints and increasing awareness to small businesses. My wife was scrolling through Groupon and found a discounted tour/tasting to the distillery and me,being a whiskey fan, graciously obliged to accompany her for a date. I was a bit skeptical pulling into the parking lot of an industrial area in Tempe thinking to myself this is no place to brew whiskey let alone run a tasting room but hey, I don't make whiskey or have a tasting room so what do I know. I soon found out that you can make a damn good whiskey in an industrial park in Tempe! We moseyed up to the bar where there were 5 other patrons and we're greeted by 2 of the 3 owners. Shot glasses were set down in front of us and the story of Adventurous Stills began to flow with each and every heavy pour of the bottles. I was thoroughly amazed as we made our way through Vodka, Tequila, Rum, Gin, Bourbon and Whiskey. The whole operation started by 3 guys loved whiskey and exploring Arizona, they all have full time jobs and do this as a hobby....HOW COOL IS THAT! This place is awesome! We found a Groupon for a tour for two and decided to go on a last minute date night. The bartenders were very informed and the service was great. Our tour was done by Kelly who obviously knew what he was doing. It was a great time and interesting hearing about all of the distilling methods for the alcohols they create. Also, each liquor had its own unique character- they do things differently. We will definitely be repeat customers- picked up the Peralta Bourbon which might be my new favorite! read more

My amazing girlfriend bought a few groupons for us to do date nights and a tour and tasting for two at Adventurous Stills distillery was one of them! We had only done one other tour and tasting prior to this one, so we were unsure what to expect but it was quite the treat. We both bought drinks (Killer Bees Knees and Backwoods Mojito) to sip on during the 30-45 minute tour. HOORAY FOR BOOZE! During the tour we learned all about the distilling process and sampled several different alcohols: Gin, Vodka, Rum and Moonshine. After the tour concluded, we were taken back up to the bar to continue our tasting with the bartender. We sampled 2 or 3 assorted whiskeys. The bar area is small but welcoming and the bartenders are wonderful people. They don't offer food so you are allowed to bring in your own food. Take the tour it such a cool experience and you get to sample lots of their spirits. I'm general pretty picky when it comes alcohol but every single one I tried was good (I didn't like them all because some just weren't my thing, but they still seemed good). This place is a must-visit...off the beaten path. Great drinks and mixologist LaLa truly knows her stuff. Might take a bit longer for you get yourdrink, but def wort it. $8 hand crafted drinks...fresh herbs and juices. Well worth the $. We toured the facility and Chase was our guide and was informative and entertaining. I partook in a vodka mojito before and took it with me on the tour...ridiculously fresh and refreshing. Chase is quick but thorough with plenty of info in his tour. You can tell these guys really care to provide a quality product. After the tour, we tasted all the spirits. I came here Saturday afternoon with a friend to sample some whisky and plan a Grand Canyon trip (a Planyon, if you will). Should've come with realistic expectations about the latter because all our attention was on the distillery and talking shop with the really friendly guys working there! After a couple samples and drinks, we took a tour of the production end where they happened to be running a batch through the still, which was cool to see (you can actually stick a finger into the hydrometer reservoir and give the intermediate product a taste!). The coolest part to me, though, is how the distillery is a self-funded personal project of the guys working there, and that definitely comes across in the tour (e.g. brainstorm sessions written on a whiteboard next to the bottling area). Our guide (a full time aerospace engineer) was very knowledgeable of he whole process and happy to answer our many questions. And of course the most important part: the booze was phenomenal; the gin, rum, and bourbon were some of the best I've had. Unlike a lot of other distilleries who buy their stuff from a large factory and run it through their still just to say it was made there, Adventurous Stills does everything themselves, start to finish, so the quality is fully controlled. They're also looking into incorporating some ancient grains in their next batches, so that should definitely be worth checking out! read more

What a great spot! It's hidden and we certainly didn't expect it to be where it is but what a gem! Chase and Laurissa were there and made it well worth it. Chase gave the tour and some history and Laurissa waited the bar area. We did the sample tasting and tried several different spirits they offer. All were great in their own right. Where to start.. We LOVE this place. We showed up on a Saturday right as they opened at 2, and were immediately greeted by Jeff and Chase (two of the owners) as well as Cooper (best described as the customer experience assistant) who chatted with us for a few minutes until another couple showed up, and then we started on a tour of the distillery. We have been on several tours of local distilleries, but this one stood out because of the passion and excitement the owners have for the craft of spirit making. They were extremely knowledgeable ad excited to answer any questions we had while walking through the operation. Luckily for us they were running a batch of bourbon through the still when we were there and we were able to see the machinery working. Jeff had batch number 26 of gin that he was trying to perfect with different blends of botanicals. We were able to observe, and discuss some of his previous batches before moving on to the tasting room. Chase was working the tasting room, we were able to sample their Vodka, Gin, Botanical Gin, Rum, Rye Beer, White Whiskey, and Whiskey. They currently only have their vodka available for sale to take home (due to the labeling process taking ages for approval) however they have a few signature cocktails that they craft, or you can order the spirits on the rocks to enjoy there. We ordered an old fashioned and a mule. They were both delicious, and we had fun watching Jeff make them. (He isn't the usual bartender, but was a great sport when we ordered the drinks.) We ended up being there for around 3 hours, with a several other people coming and going during that time. Now we are having withdrawals anxiously waiting for it to be Friday so we can go back. (They are only open to the public on Friday and Saturday afternoon/evenings.) We definitely have a lot of respect for them, more so because they do all the work themselves, all the way from digging trenches for the waterlines, welding the copper stills and counters; to grinding the grain and bottling. Their graphic designer does amazing work as well (the bottle labels are stunning!) The three owners all have full time jobs, and it is amazing to see how much work they have put into their dream of having a distillery while keeping up with the nine-to-five grind. There are a lot of reasons we recommend this place, the drinks, the atmosphere, it being a local start-up company. Our favorite thing however is seeing their love-life attitudes and passion for adventure and challenges, it really shows in their product and the experience they give. In short, YOU GOTTA GO. If u live locally, take an Uber there and back. Tip your Uber driver enough to walk you to your door so your wife doesn't find you passed out in driveway the next morning. Chill out at their bar, relax, have one of their mixed drinks before your tour and Kelly (one of the owners/distillers) will be more than happy to tell you about the beginnings of this location. Read on if you want the essay a la Arizona Whiskey. So I end up in the Tempe, Scottsdale, Phoenix area at least once every 1-2 years on business and this distillery has been on my list of places to see and tour. Despite 6 previous attempts I finally did the Uber thing to this location and I can't tell you what an awesome experience I had but I'm gonna try. I'm from the land of Tennessee Whiskey and live about 20 minutes from Jack Daniels. I also have about 40 different bourbons and whiskeys in my "Bourbon Room" at home. I've completed the Bourbon Trail and visited over a dozen distilleries in the last 3 years. If I said on here that I've actually distilled some white lightening before through some copper coils then that would be stupid because who would want to admit to doing something illegal like that, especially in writing. Not me. What I'm trying to say is, I think I know my bourbons and whiskeys fairly well. My golf game sucks so it don't matter if I'm hitting a Titleist ball with Ping clubs or a Taylor Made ball with a set of Wal-Mart Clubs that were pawned off by a hooker so she could buy a line of nose candy. For that reason, let's not talk golf. Let's talk Whiskey, Bourbon, distilling, and simply having a dream and putting a plan in motion to achieve that dream. So many people in today's world, have a dream, something they want to do, but they just never get off their a$$ and do it. Well Kelly, and his co-owners, had a dream to make a bourbon in Arizona, with Arizona ingredients. I hate to admit but I stopped in at another distillery before heading over to Adventurous Stills. The other place had some decent ETOH but it wasn't local. At least the bourbon wasn't. The openly told me that they had it brought in from Indiana where it was distilled and then slapped a local label on it. Kudos to that location for loving bourbon and whiskey AND for being honest to this bourbon lover about where they got their ETOH. For me though, I'm the "when in Rome...." do as the Roman's do so I was determined to find some locally made whiskey/bourbon. Kelly and his crew at Adventurous Stills has it. He gets every single ingredient possible from Arizona, but the very few he can't he will tell you about in the tour. For instance, I believe he mentioned that he gets his Jupiter Berries from Venus and dingleberries from Uranus. Sorry.... he gets his juniper berries from Croatia and his Rye indirectly from Germany. Otherwise, most things, including his citrus ingredients are local. His tour was fantastic. As I mentioned before, I've been on quite a few tours. Some of these at very large distilleries. I can say that Kelly's tour of his location takes the prize. Not because he is giving a tour of a distillery with a long ago tradition or recipe like Jack Daniels, or because he has melted wax to add some finishing touches like Maker's Mark. His tour wins because of his energy. How often do you get a tour from the man who dreamt of opening a distillery and then actually did it. Imagine having Jack Daniels give you a tour within 2 years of his first distillation. If you come to Tennessee I would strongly encourage you to go visit Jack Daniels or George Dickel or Short Mountain or Chattanooga Whiskey, etc. BUT if you love whiskey or bourbon and you find yourself in Arizona then GO TO ADVENTUROUS STILLS!!! His drink recipes are amazing and his whiskey and bourbons are a solid hit. I'm no gin fan in general but his gin was very good. He also had some whiskey with a bit of smoke to it that was so unique and different but hit the nose in an exciting way. I love it when someone is passionate about their job. You can tell that Kelly loves what he does. It also doesn't matter if you're a whiskey/bourbon kinda guy/girl. Or you like those clear liquors like the gin and vodka. They have something for everyone. He even had a triple sec that he distilled with some Arizona grown oranges. I would've spent over $50 for that alone. I'm hoping that in the Fall of 2020 when I return to Scottsdale I can waddle up to the bar at the Scottsdale Resort and ask what local bourbons or whiskeys they have and the bartender will slide a bottle of Adventurous Stills down the bar. I will take a shot or three, then say, "I'll be your huckleberry," as my wife says how much she likes my Doc Holliday mustache. It probably won't play out quite like that BUT I will be a happy man if the bartender at least has some of Kelly's fine product. Best of luck to the whole crew at Adventurous Stills. read more
