Fast forward almost two years later, we were ready to put the concrete in our yard. When I contacted Ruff & Ready, they had our photos, previous quote, and hand written notes still in their portal. I surely wasn't expecting this. Jeff came out to measure the new spot and confirm the scope of work. He was efficient, flexible with his timing, and arrived in the window given. Jeff's quote was not the most expensive nor was it the cheapest. What made us choose Ruff & Ready you ask? Jeff spoke as if what he said would actually happen. And that's how it went! He was transparent, honest, and didn't fluff anything. He got us a quote for the updated work within 24 hours. His office assistant Vanessa answered all our questions and walked us through the timeline of the whole thing, from start to finish, from signing our contract to paying the deposit to when we would begin work to how to pay the remaining balance. Vanessa answered text messages promptly and also answered the phone. No elevator music on the other line, no 'all of our representatives are busy' garbage. The crew who came out was incredible. They were respectful. They didn't blast music or leave trash. They were thorough and adhered to the timeline given. They closed the gate and ensured it was locked each day, which matters to me as a mom with littles. They parked in the street and moved when I needed to get into my garage. We used Ruff & Ready as a test as our current gardener will be relocating soon. We could not be happier with our experience and plan to use them for future backyard projects. We selected Ruff & Ready to do the biggest changes to our raw backyard, wanting to leave some parts for us to do on our own later planter boxes, slope, etc.). Jeff and his team handled: - Gas line to BBQ and fire pit (for us to build/install later) - Redo of our entire irrigation, including a mix of drip, tree bubblers, above-ground sprinklers, and stub-ups for our planter boxes later - Redo of our drainage to ensure good water management on whole property, including accommodating gutters for later - Concrete walkway with raised curb on the side connecting to driveway - Artificial turf for remainder of the yard - Replacing paver deck edging QUOTE: I, at first, thought the quote came in a little high, then I realized that the other half-dozen companies didn't list everything I requested in their quotes, and once pressed, the competing quotes all came up to Ruff's price. Ruff & Ready was the ONLY one that listened to everything I said, didn't pressure me to change what we wanted, and was honest from the start without looking to "change order" everything later. Honest, competitive pricing. TEAM: The team showed up and got to work immediately. They got so much done so fast. It was the same crew every day of the project. The workers, the supervisor, the customer service by phone/email, were all so amazing. Constantly nice and friendly. I had so many questions, and they were patient with me in addressing all of it. They also seemed so happy to be working for Jeff. It's clear he takes good care of his team and we are so happy to give our money to a company like that. RESULTS: Everything was literally perfect. Our artificial turf required so many cuts and pieces, yet we can't the seams! The concrete looks great. My yard is sloped to favor the drains without looking for feeling like I'm walking on a ramp. The turf drains are also so well hidden. The results are literally better than we envisioned. We had a bad experience with a different company for a different home project, and we were scared going into this larger project. Jeff was present and available, reassuring and communicating the entire time. There were no surprise change orders, and no nickel and dining. We literally could not have asked for a better price, team, service, and results. We got exactly what we hoped for, and more! We just filed a complaint with the California State License Board against Gary and are in process…read moreof filing a complaint with the Temecula Valley Better Business Bureau. Working with Gary has turned into a nightmare you can't wake up from. Based on the other poor reviews and our experience, his modus operandi is missed meetings, underbidding contracts, and coming back to the homeowners for more money when they are vulnerable. We thought we were dealing with A-1 Landscape & Design.  However, Gary signed the $53K contract in October 2018 as Creatiscape Inc using the license number assigned to A-1 Landscape, a sole proprietorship.  The crew came in and demoed the existing patio, leaving all the concrete rubble.  Gary then requested a meeting at which time he claimed he had made a huge mistake in the bid. He was financially under water and could not pay his crew unless we added $5K to the contract price and pay it to him that day.  He blamed the mistake on Santiago being out when he estimated the job. We thought this strange as Gary is the owner, carries the license and should know how to bid a job.  We felt very uncomfortable with this but felt compelled to agree in order to get the broken concrete removed and the workers back on the job.  Gary never provided a change order. He assured us he had reviewed the contract and there would be no more surprises.   The workers came back to work and proceeded to rip out the existing electrical runs when working the bobcat.  Gary took no responsibility for the repairs needed.   We still hadn't even gotten to the first progress payment when Gary came back a second time telling us he couldn't complete the job for lack of funds. He practically begged us to let him complete the work up to the first progress payment but would not commit to finishing the rest of the job for the contracted price.  We refused and insisted he complete the job as contracted and work with us on fixing the electrical issues.  Instead, he and Santiago came back, packed up their tools and left leaving the backyard a mess with unsafe holes and trenches and no power.  We contacted a lawyer who advised us that Gary is not allowed to use the contractor's license for A-1 to engage in a contract under Creatiscape Inc.  A call to the insurance company confirmed that Gary carried worker's compensation under A-1 Landscape, but nothing under the corporation he signed the contract under.  We weren't covered if there had been an incident. Even under A-1 he had a gap of insurance coverage for over three months in 2018.

If there were 10 stars I would give them to A1. It seems odd that a LOT of 5 star reviews are…read morehidden by Yelp. Shame on Yelp. Gary and crew were on time each day and worked ALL day. I made a lot of changes and Gary made me aware all along of any additional $$ charges or trade-offs (more rock and less mulch). The plant selection was great. Gary has an artfull eye and envisions the finished project long before they started. I would highly recommend A1 and am proud to show off the masterpiece they created. And the guy Rich that owns Tihitian never returns your call. WARNING do not use him.
