It's never super crowded, sometimes you may run into for horses if you're on horse-friendly trails and you can hike down to the Colorado River as well. The trails are pretty well maintained and marked. Summer camps: my son (7) has been attending their day summer camps for three years now and absolutely loves them! They are from 9-4 so very friendly for those parents working. There is also a bus that brings kids in from Austin as well. The price can't be beat as well. Each day he comes home telling me about what he learned and got to experience (most times I am jealous- like you got to go kayaking? Make and drink yaupon tea? What- how cool!) The camp counselors are extremely friendly and knowledgeable and treat the kids with kindness and respect. They also have a beautiful facility, overall. The grounds are clean and well-kept. McKinney Roughs is simply the best!

I love the pine trees and views from some of the trails. The campground is lovely as well. Very clean. Spaces are large. People are respectful. But... A big con is the traffic noise at night! We stayed in the Copperas Creek Camping Area, which is quite close to the road, so we expected some noise. But it was intense both noise. A loud, long crash woke me up in the middle of the night, with a second crash crashing into the debris from the first one. That whole incident kept me up for 2 hours. I don't know if the other campgrounds in the park are any better. The park is nestled in a populated area so I doubt it. But the trails and area are beautiful!! So I would definitely recommend for hiking!! Not so much tent camping... (maybe it's better in an RV?).

This area got hit hard by the recent flooding (2013, 2015), but unlike Richard Moya, has not stayed closed for extended periods. Some feedback here: -Very spartan restroom facilities (I hope you don't mind hopping into a Port-a-John) and if you're not near the parking lot, you're hosed. -Many of the trails seem incomplete and dead end in strange locations -- perhaps washouts of previously existing facilities? That being said, for park aficionados of a certain breed (generally, birders), this is a pretty good bet on the SE side, and with a bit more clean-up and polish, can be a showpiece.

A short and not to mention, beautiful drive from Austin, Cook's Canoes is out in the small town of Webberville. The canoe shop itself helps me remember why I moved to Austin in the first place (though as we all know, Austin has lost a lot of its charm along the way). Cook's has character and the folks there (Syd and crew) are so welcoming and nice. I have rented both a canoe with my boyfriend and a kayak solo this summer and both experiences were fun and relaxing. The Colorado River is peaceful and the scenery is stunning. Not to mention, you might spot a few river cows and bird friends along the way. At the end of your river trip, someone will come pick you up...so the convenience factor is definitely there! Especially since Covid, I find it important to discover things that help me feel free and safe.
