Good feeling here. Free admissions and good customer service staffs. You can just walk in or register online. There's a tiny gift area not far from the public restrooms. I signed the guestbook at the end of my walk. Good place to hang around/includes unlimited paper, paper/pencils/samples/etc. If you like to sketch and get some creative inspirations, all the nature artworks in the gallery is definitely a good place to start. Not huge, but perfectly quite and calm for art lovers. You can request for an orientation and/or tour as desired. Great first impression during first visit. It's the positive feeling I get from observing the energy and various colorful artworks. Simple and stress-free. Good value/free admissions is totally worth the 1-2 hours here. I feel a responsibility to include as much as possible in this 10 -day tour. This is why I suggest that people schedule extra travel days before and after the tour, as there is so much to see and do in Moscow and St. Petersburg. There should have been no surprise about the itinerary; it was published months before the tour and the final itinerary was emailed to everyone prior to departure. I am glad that you and your friend took my recommendation to add extra days so you'd have time to shop. I want to remind you that we did have a welcome reception, to which you and your friend never showed up. We also had a farewell lunch and I have some lovely pictures of you and your friend having a grand time. Later that evening, the entire group got together for a farewell dinner which you did not attend, as you and your friend had made prior arrangements to go to the theater. There was great camaraderie among the other members of the group, which can be seen by the lovely recommendation letters they wrote (http://www.russianarttour.com/recomendations/). I would also like to remind you that running a group smoothly with a full itinerary involves everyone showing up on time. When, prior to the beginning of the tour, you and your friend chose to stay at a different hotel from the rest of the group, I stressed how important it was that you meet the group on time for planned activities. Yet, the two of you were consistently late. In fact, you two were so late to the dinner prior to the Bolshoi Theatre that we almost missed the performance. With regard to the use of an iPad, this part is true. When I hired the head docent of the Russian Museum to give me a private tour she brought a handful of visual aids. I thought it was so smart that I started incorporating them into my lectures. When you're discussing art in five huge museums with over 2,000 artists and thousands of paintings, it is much easier to put these items on a iPad then to carry paper. My blog is followed by over 50,000 people; there certainly must be something of value there. Not every tour works for everybody. Sorry this wasn't the right tour for you.

If you have any interest/knowledge of art and are well-traveled, DO NOT take this tour. Cathy L, tour leader's knowledge of art history is cursory; she uses an iPad to explain the art; shockingly mispronounces old masters' names (Titan for Titian; Tintinoretto for Tintoretto, etc.) She did not promote group camaraderie (there was no welcome dinner/reception so we could meet our fellow travelers; and no farewell dinner/reception) and she was a poor communicator relating daily activities. Moscow and St. Petersburg were cities my friend and I spoke about many times, because of the exceptional art and art museums, and thought we had found the perfect art tour; we were wrong. On a positive note: Moscow/St. Petersburg were wonderful cities with much to see; our local tour guides (Elena and Eugenia) were accommodating and knowledgeable (thank goodness for them) and the art museums in both cities were spectacular. If Recology sounds familiar, that's probably because you've seen the name emblazoned on the recycling containers that you put out at the curb every week. Get this - the recycling company has had an artist-in-residence program for over thirty years, in which they sponsor artists with studio space, a stipend, and access to the unwanted detritus of the city with which they create art. The Bedford Gallery has curated an excellent exhibit of a small sampling of the works of over 200 artists and students. The art works are an impressive transformation of things like coaxial cable, plywood scraps, broom handles, Ikea shopping bags, 16mm film, and innumerable other discoveries that others have purged from their lives. To call this mixed media is an understatement. The gallery staff were very friendly today and were pleased that someone had actually showed up. We walked in about an hour after opening and they said we were first; no one else entered during our longer-than-expected visit. Such a shame, really, because this place is just a block from the downtown shops and restaurants. If the other exhibits throughout the year are this good, then Walnut Creek has an underappreciated jewel here. We'll be keeping an eye on their future exhibits. We were able to visit this place free of charge using our local library's Discover and Go program. This is also available to users of the Contra Costa County Library system. The regular price of admission is a nominal $5 for persons 13 and older - not bad at all for a little cultural interlude.

Think "urban barn," with a small gallery below and a huge hardwood floored loft with vaulted ceilings and luxurious patio above. Vessel was the absolute stand-out spot for me during Art Murmur. They had a very simple but interesting sculpture exhibit downtstairs, and this dreamy little folksy musician (Anna Ash and the Family Tree) strumming and crooning away upstairs. It was all so bohemian. Vessel is a must, especially amidst the mish-mash of happenings during Art Murmur. But beware...you'll probably want to stay a while.

It was the venue for a Yelp mixer that featured body art. Such a gorgeous space, and a great spot to stop off and reflect on the meaning and purpose of art for a bit. PS The rafters and angles with the sloped roofline create dedicated nooks and crannies of secrecy and mystique, which I find utterly charming. Reminds me of the wonderful days I lived off Gibbons Dr in Alameda.....a literal paradise of architectural gems.
