Lovely gallery and event space. Cool old building. Sloped ceilings upstairs. Cozy outdoor patio. An asset to Oakland.

That space is gorgeous. I want to live there. The building layout is spectacular. The art was good too.

Ginny, I am sorry that this Yelp posting is the first I have heard of your dissatisfaction. You're…read moreright; this was a very busy itinerary! I feel a responsibility to include as much as possible in this 10 -day tour. This is why I suggest that people schedule extra travel days before and after the tour, as there is so much to see and do in Moscow and St. Petersburg. There should have been no surprise about the itinerary; it was published months before the tour and the final itinerary was emailed to everyone prior to departure. I am glad that you and your friend took my recommendation to add extra days so you'd have time to shop. I want to remind you that we did have a welcome reception, to which you and your friend never showed up. We also had a farewell lunch and I have some lovely pictures of you and your friend having a grand time. Later that evening, the entire group got together for a farewell dinner which you did not attend, as you and your friend had made prior arrangements to go to the theater. There was great camaraderie among the other members of the group, which can be seen by the lovely recommendation letters they wrote (http://www.russianarttour.com/recomendations/). I would also like to remind you that running a group smoothly with a full itinerary involves everyone showing up on time. When, prior to the beginning of the tour, you and your friend chose to stay at a different hotel from the rest of the group, I stressed how important it was that you meet the group on time for planned activities. Yet, the two of you were consistently late. In fact, you two were so late to the dinner prior to the Bolshoi Theatre that we almost missed the performance. With regard to the use of an iPad, this part is true. When I hired the head docent of the Russian Museum to give me a private tour she brought a handful of visual aids. I thought it was so smart that I started incorporating them into my lectures. When you're discussing art in five huge museums with over 2,000 artists and thousands of paintings, it is much easier to put these items on a iPad then to carry paper. The visuals aids that I use include compositional and color charts. The ones I created for Ilya Repin's early work can be seen on my blog - http://cathylockeartblog.com/repin-his-early-work/. My blog is followed by over 50,000 people; there certainly must be something of value there. Not every tour works for everybody. Sorry this wasn't the right tour for you.

Poorly organized, rushed, expensive, high single supplement, no free time; luckily my friend and I…read moreadded an extra 2 nights so we were able to shop. If you have any interest/knowledge of art and are well-traveled, DO NOT take this tour. Cathy L, tour leader's knowledge of art history is cursory; she uses an iPad to explain the art; shockingly mispronounces old masters' names (Titan for Titian; Tintinoretto for Tintoretto, etc.) She did not promote group camaraderie (there was no welcome dinner/reception so we could meet our fellow travelers; and no farewell dinner/reception) and she was a poor communicator relating daily activities. Moscow and St. Petersburg were cities my friend and I spoke about many times, because of the exceptional art and art museums, and thought we had found the perfect art tour; we were wrong. On a positive note: Moscow/St. Petersburg were wonderful cities with much to see; our local tour guides (Elena and Eugenia) were accommodating and knowledgeable (thank goodness for them) and the art museums in both cities were spectacular. We visited in July 2014; this review is for an 8 day tour.

FREE BOAT TOUR?? Say less…read more Scored tickets on Eventbrite by sheer luck and fast fingers--like, Hunger Games fast. I clicked "register" and two minutes later the entire thing was sold out. The site was lagging so bad it felt like I was trying to buy Taylor Swift tickets, but for a ship. They handed out free Oakland Harbor pins like it was Halloween, which honestly made me feel very official. The tour itself? A+ vibes. The guides were funny, informative, and clearly living their best sea-loving lives. Fun fact: apparently most of the giant shipping boats cruising in come from Asia, and somehow I've passed them for years without noticing the country names literally written on the sides. Who knew? Now the downside: the snacks were a crime. No garlic fries. Just $10 tea and peanuts combo that somehow made my "free" boat ride feel bougie. If you sit outside (which I did because I like wind and pretending I'm in a dramatic movie scene), just know the speakers are basically whispering. But hey, vibes over volume, right? Totally recommend--just bring your own snacks and your best clicking finger.

The weather was perfect and it was a fun, engaging experience. They narrate most of the ride out, pointing out significant ships and places along the channel. You pass Alameda, sail over BART, glide under the Bay Bridge, and cruise by Angel Island. If you listen, you will definitely learn something new. The best place to sit or stand is on the right (facing Oakland). I was inside, because I needed to sit, but there was easy access to the back of the boat. I got some great pics. There is also easy access to the snack bar. They have candy, chips, soda, and other snackables. The surprise offering was cup of noodles, which seemed really popular. They did a brisk business the whole trip. The best parts for me were the cranes, seeing the bridge up close, and check your the lighthouse on Angel Island, particularly the cranes. Shout to George Lucas. He claims the cranes weren't the inspiration for the imperial walkers on Hoth. We all know better. Anyway, be prepared to stand in line a bit before boarding (like at least 1/2 an hour), lots of people, and lots of kids. It seemed popular with families. Time seemed approximate. The tour started "late" and ended a bit late. Nothing too obscene, just don't plan anything immediately following. The tours are popular, so sign up early. Again, it's free, and it's pretty delightful. Definitely recommended.
