With all the available vacant space in Oakland's Jack London Square I was thrilled to see some of…read morethat space used for creative purposes. I wandered along Oakland's waterfront on Saturday afternoon trying to walk off some of the million calories I indulged in at the 2010 Eat Real Festival when I came across this free installation. The gallery sponsored by the East Bay Express, a weekly alternative newspaper based in the East Bay, is open on weekends only, but to coincide with Eat Real they extended their hours for the weekend. The name of the current exhibition is "A Decade With No Name" and it is a celebration of some of the East Bay's best artists both old and new. Through paintings, installations, illustrations and other mediums the show is a graphic feast for the eyes, and the vast size of the space is perfect for an exhibition such as this. Photography is allowed and some of the artists are on site to offer some insight into their art as well as to make a little extra money by selling prints and personalized sketches. One of the exhibit's sponsors, Oakland based apparel company fiftyseven-thirtythree, even has a rack of clothing for sale inside the show. Being the one-time comic book junkie I once was one set of prints by artist Alex Pardee titled "West Coast Avengers" (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/52ahP21yLVoLujrqbJwcmA?select=ca3L7WC3CsjMDEjj5VrBug) certainly caught my eye. Also having majored in architecture throughout my college years I spent a lot of time perfecting my art and illustration skills and the fine lines in these illustrations definitely caught my eye. One piece titled "Hat Trick" (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/52ahP21yLVoLujrqbJwcmA?select=p4MLRWNQiSui8MNiAVGkLQ) by artist Dave Correia caught my attention as it made me think back on a project in junior college where we were asked to morph a body part into something abstract. Back then I executed my project using an Eagle draughting pencil only, but Correia's piece looks so much better in acrylic, a medium I continue to practice with even today. Painting with oils was always difficult for me so when I saw artist Aaron Nagel's many pieces on display I appreciated them even more. Here are just a couple of examples of his work. One of the more intriguing, and probably amazing, pieces of art on display is one by artist Annie Voight. From a distance I thought the piece was made of wire, but upon further inspection I realized the entire piece was cut out continuously on one giant sheet of paper. I looked for sections that may have been glued or fused together but found none. "Do I Look Like Your Mother?" (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/52ahP21yLVoLujrqbJwcmA?select=lzweuH_YNpP10v10AHCUcg) has a very deep message inscribed within the art, but you'll need to see and read this one for yourself. My fiancé and I have walked by many times since we live in the area and we have seen lively events that seem to attract cool folks. Yesterday we finally stopped by when a friend of ours told us about a wedding vendor event that was scheduled that she was djing at. We got engaged in October and have attended a few super annoyingly cheesy wedding events. This one was exceptional in comparison and it was because it was curated with local Oakland and east bay based vendors and not big companies trying to sell us over priced crap. [Side note, anyone that has planned a wedding before knows that the mention of the word "wedding" will jack up a cost to at least 4x the listed value!] Back to the lovely event space, it was put on by An Affair to Remember and we loved it! The vendors were genuinely kind and helpful, not pushy at all, and offered great information and wedding resources. We met Vanessa, the director and business owner of Studio Grand, who is a down to earth person and dedicated to cultural and diverse event offerings. The space itself is cozy, it has large windows in front and hardwood floors. It felt very homey and community based. They host dance classes, film screenings, and a wide variety of other events. My fiancé and I enjoyed our time at #marrymeOakland, and I hope to come back one day soon and try out a dance class!

Cool art gallery with quirky and engaging events, located on the second floor of the Faultline…read moreartspace (you can easily view faultline artwork too while attending special events in the building). Came here to check out the Mushi Mushi art show this past weekend. The event was lovely, lots of bunny pieces on display and for sale, including Conega Con Hongos by Jason Henry, an adorable mixed media rabbit sculpture made of dried mushrooms... oh yeah, plenty of non-bunny mushroom art too. My faves were Spirit in a Forest of Mushrooms, The Chaos of Hope, and Sentient Shrooms: Spa Day (I included photos). Inside the event, they had a little bar serving drinks, a bit of seating, artist studio spaces adorned with creative works, and even a live snake near the back. Advance registration for free admission to the art show event were "sold" online, but they didn't check tickets at the door, it was pretty much come and go as you please. There was hardly any signage outside to find the place, and it's not in the cleanest or safest part of the city, so park your vehicles here at your own risk... but at least they had free and easy street parking right next to the venue for convenience. With so many amazing works by talented artists, there's certainly lots to appreciate here, an exhibition worth visiting especially when it costs nothing but a little bit of your time. Such an amazing space…read more Aside from being a gorgeous gallery, it's also my dream house. Think "urban barn," with a small gallery below and a huge hardwood floored loft with vaulted ceilings and luxurious patio above. Vessel was the absolute stand-out spot for me during Art Murmur. They had a very simple but interesting sculpture exhibit downtstairs, and this dreamy little folksy musician (Anna Ash and the Family Tree) strumming and crooning away upstairs. It was all so bohemian. Vessel is a must, especially amidst the mish-mash of happenings during Art Murmur. But beware...you'll probably want to stay a while.

It was the venue for a Yelp mixer that featured body art. Such a gorgeous space, and a great spot to stop off and reflect on the meaning and purpose of art for a bit. PS The rafters and angles with the sloped roofline create dedicated nooks and crannies of secrecy and mystique, which I find utterly charming. Reminds me of the wonderful days I lived off Gibbons Dr in Alameda.....a literal paradise of architectural gems.
