My son has special needs and is approved for ADA accommodations. Given his circumstances, clear and consistent communication is especially important. Unfortunately, I feel that the communication from Nicole Kheyfets, Career Services Medical Director, has been inadequate. I was not informed of any concerns regarding a missed meeting until I was notified that my son's graduation date would have to be pushed back. As a result, his externship has now been delayed, which has subsequently delayed his graduation. I find this situation extremely frustrating and concerning. A missed meeting should not result in such significant academic consequences without timely communication, particularly when the student has documented accommodations and may require additional support with scheduling and communication. I am requesting that this matter be reviewed and that I receive clarification regarding why I was not contacted sooner, what steps were taken to accommodate my son's needs, and what can be done to prevent any further delays to his externship and graduation. My son has worked hard toward completing his program, and I believe he deserves appropriate communication, support, and consideration of his approved accommodations throughout this process. I've done my fair share of school, having degrees from ASU and having done many courses at a variety of local community colleges. Brookline College is a private school but it functions just the same as any of these other schools, they still have standards they have to meet to be accredited for these programs. I highly suggest taking the time to talk with the advisor, and if you can, the program director or an instructor from your program, to review your prerequisites and where you need to start to be successful. When I met with my advisor and one of the core instructors, we discussed which classes I could skip because I transferred in course work from past schooling. This was helpful in decreasing some of the expenses and got me straight into the core classes of the program, but I highly recommend you talk it out so you know exactly what you are paying for, and are prepared for the workload. I also recommend being honest and direct and discussing how you are gonna juggle working full-time (if you need to) and going to school full-time. It can be VERY difficult to do both at the same time, but I knew people who were going to school part-time, or worked out options with the program director to work with their work schedule. **Discuss these hurdles before signing up and starting your program! The MLT program was tough and required a lot of outside studying. These health programs require a lot of effort to be properly prepared to sit for the certification exams, but this school and their instructors do prepare you for success. The MLT program in particular, has been growing and some fantastic teachers with many years of experience have come on board. I found these teachers to be super supportive, responsive, and helpful whenever students were struggling. Even during covid, the program director worked to make sure we didn't have to take a pause in our program, and I was even able to do my externship during covid (and at a great facility), and graduate on time. My externship site even offered me a job before I finished my program! After graduating in December 2020, I took two months to study for the ASCP exam (while working part time), took my test in March 2021 and passed, then had a job offer from a local hospital that I applied to, by mid April 2021. Almost immediately after I graduated, the school's career development coordinator was reaching out to me about fixing up my resume, sending me job postings and even referring me to open MLT positions. They want to help students find a job in their new career. Overall, I had a great experience with this school. I had great teachers that I learned a lot from, met great classmates that I became friends with, and could lean on for help, and worked hard to be successful in this new field. Unfortunately, I think that some people come to these schools with a misunderstanding that because they have paid more for the private education that they should be passed through their program, which doesn't happen. But the school will work with you on an individual basis if you need help, and they still hold you to the standards of your program, which is critical for your success as a medical professional. Hard work here, will pay off for your future endeavors.

I was not informed that my course would be almost entirely online until the first day, after I had already driven all the way to campus. The program itself felt very disorganized and understaffed. At one point, the Assistant Dean was responsible for multiple classes at once, which made it difficult to get proper support. I experienced ongoing technical issues that I reported from day one, but they were not resolved in a timely manner. The day before an exam, the Assistant Dean pulled me aside and told me it looked like I would not pass her class. When I asked what I could do to fix the situation, I was told there was nothing that could be done even though my concerns had already been documented. I ended up going above her to get the issue resolved myself, but after that, I felt like I was treated differently. In addition to the academic challenges, I also dealt with subtle bullying and microaggressions from peers. I reported this to instructors, but no action was taken. I even overheard classmates discussing how I was going to fail, which was extremely discouraging and emotionally distressing. The only positive part of my experience was my advisor, who actually listened and tried to support me. Overall, the lack of communication, support, and accountability created a negative and, at times, hostile learning environment. For those considering this program, I would strongly encourage you to ask detailed questions about structure, support, and class format before enrolling.

What they may not realize is that while that experience is great for many people, yet others may be looking for a different experience. The ASU West Valley Campus is much smaller than the Tempe Campus yet it's a community where every student has the potential to feel connected with resources and to know many students, staff, and faculty by name just as many faculty and staff can really get to know their students well. It's growing at a fast pace and has transferred over the last decade from a commuter campus to a residential campus with more than 1100 bed spaces in two residence halls and one on-campus apartment complex. The ASU West Valley Campus just turned 40 years old, and in my opinion, it is the most beautiful campus of the many ASU campuses as it includes fountains, gardens, artwork, and so much more. In fact, I've heard before that it was designed in the image of Oxford. It attracts not only students from other campus who choose to take classes at the West Valley Campus but community members to come onto campus for the many special events that are open to the community. Recently, the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences spearheaded a wonderful event open to students, staff, faculty, and community members called the Winter Wonderland, bringing a winter festival experience to the ASU West Valley Campus as more than 1500 people attended. As the campus continues to grow and expand as a part of the West Valley Forward initiative, the number of buildings on campus continue to increase. In addition to academic buildings like SANDS and CLCC, a new building will open soon. There is a University Center (UCB) with many ASU student services represented inside along with the Barrett (Honors College) office, the Sun Devil Campus Store, a Multicultural Communities of Excellence space, Cafe West, offices for student organizations such as the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) and the Programming and Activities Board (PAB), an art space, various other spaces available to reserve both large and small, a future student space, and more. There is the Fletcher Library with its own Starbucks, the three residential communities, Changemaker Central, a marketplace with Jamba Juice, an academic building with faculty offices (FAB), an ASU Police station, facilities offices, a lecture building, the Kiva Auditorium, the Herberger Youth Scholars Academy building, a thriving field space, and a beautiful three-story Sun Devil Fitness Center. Needless to say, there is something for everyone on the ASU West Valley Campus. At the West Valley Campus, every student can drive their own experience as they engage in the events and resources on-campus while attending classes, getting an on-campus job, landing an internship or full-time job, joining clubs and organizations, attending many free events and activities, and so much more. In the meantime I completed my associates degree at my local community college. We had a UOP down the street from work so I started there for a BS in business. I was given a position they considered as working out of classification meaning I should have a degree, but still allowed me to have the position with full pay since I was attending college. The hiring manager sat me aside and told me to drop UOP and transfer to ASU. I was really young and he wanted to help me out. I was kind of like everyone's kid there. He said if I wanted my degree to mean more and wanted to be taken seriously, then I should make the move. I was happy to oblige as back then we didn't have computers at home, and after attending classes in the evening at UOP I then had to meet with classmates in person for group projects several days a week which was wearing me thin. Working in north Phoenix and spending most of my time at work I decided to attend ASU West. Their main campus was too far with all the hours I was already putting in. I was able to complete my MBA with a minor in Business Communication with ease. I sure wish we had online classes back in the day, though the cost for tuition has increased a lot since the 90s so it was worth the brick and mortar experience. Our company paid for most of my tuition with an annual education allowance so I mainly just had to cover my books. I didn't feel I missed out on the large college social campus experience, as I didn't feel at home in that environment. I recommend talking with job fair recruiters on their thoughts based on what direction you are heading for your career. If you are getting into the medical field make sure to find out what the requirements are for the state your planning on work in so you do not waste your time heading a direction that doesn't meet their requirements. Talking with anyone at any age still thinking about college, think of it as an investment. Not just a character building investment but a financial one as well. Are you going to be able to earn the money you put into your education? I seen a lot of older individuals going back and choosing paths that do not have many opportunities, or they will not be able to get the financial investment back in income to cover the years of schooling they paid for. Just something to think about. Over all this school looks good on my resume, their class sizes were small, the counselors were very helpful and knowledgeable, and for me the location was perfect. I liked the smaller campus like my community college.
