If you love pinball, they have cool machines here. I saw pulp fiction, jurassic park, and evil dead machines, for example. Their comic book shop isn't the largest one in LA; however, they are well stocked here. Check their website to see their inventory of unique items. If you keep an eye on their calendar they will have interesting events here. My wife has seen comic book signings here. Last week they had Jeff Hays, famous for the "Dungeon Crawler Carl" audio books, who was on site to do a reading of "Absolute Batman #1" for Batman Day. On top of this, they have some nicely curated gems. My wife was able to get a curated stack of "Vampire Hunter" comics that was from the Buffy universe. Next door, they have a coffee shop with ample seating/table space. Saw a group of people playing D&D there. The summation of all these things is what makes this spot in Eagle Rock special. We didn't even mind contending with the terrible parking in the area. Because I live in Long Beach, I'll probably order things from here on their website; however, I'm glad that we came.

This comic book was such a huge warehouse of comics. I probably saw close to hundreds of comics…read moreboxes and few hundreds more placed in the floor and wall shelves. The had comics for half a centuries ago to most recent versions. There were comics of all popular, lesser known, smaller, bigger all sorts of varieties. In front side of the store, there were kids versions too. Other than comic, they also had posters, pop art figurines, neon superhero signs and few other things. The store was mostly organized and boxes were labelled. But needed a lot of patience to dig through their giant inventory. Some of the most sought after ones were placed on the wall shelves by the register. My daughter picked couple of Sonic books. The staff member was friendly and quickly did the checkout. They accepted cash and cards. While we were at the store, we saw many comic fans coming into the store. They do not allow drinks and food being carried around. There's a table in front for guests to leave them while walking around the store.

The pop-up runs through August, and while the main focus is Sonic the Hedgehog, they also have merch from Persona and Yakuza. Going on a weekday with a friend was definitely the right move--we only had to wait a few minutes to get in. Upon entering, staff hands you a ticket, and employees closely monitor the room while you browse. The shop is exceptionally well-organized, making it fun to look through all the beautiful, high-quality items. Since almost everything is directly imported from Japan and hard to find in the U.S., the prices are definitely on the higher side, but the exclusivity makes it worth it. I couldn't resist picking up a miniature Shadow the Hedgehog plush! The only downside to the visit was the customer service at checkout. The two employees at the register were busy chatting with each other, so I eventually had to speak up to ask if I could check out. The employee who rang me up seemed annoyed by the interruption, skipped any friendly greetings or questions about my visit, and just handed over my item after scanning it. Despite that brief hiccup at the counter, the overall experience was super positive. It was so fun wearing my Sonic shirt, seeing all the Japanese exclusive merchandise, and taking in the atmosphere. No problem--I started looking for another item to add since I was planning to spend more anyway. As they started to announce the store was closing, I asked if I could quickly grab cash from a friend outside the store and was asked, "Can you do it in 3 minutes?" This same associate was managing the customers going in to the store and she seemed to have issues remembering people's faces. I understand the store was closing, but the interaction felt rushed and unwelcoming. I was still trying to make a purchase and likely would have bought additional items, but after being treated like an inconvenience, I decided to leave instead.

It's famous for the swirling book tunnel, the giant book arch, and there are original bank vaults that now house true crime, horror, and rare collectible books. The Last Bookstore is California's largest new and used independent book and record store. Josh Spencer founded the OG bookstore in 2005, and it moved to this massive space inside Spring Arts Tower (a converted 1914 bank building) in 2011. The inside feels like a castle of books, with high ceilings and marble columns, and heavy bank vaults. It's a must see if you're downtown and want a unique shopping experience. There are thousands of new, used, and rare books, plus a huge selection of vinyl records, CDs, and DVDs. There is also a "Labyrinth & Art Annex". The mezzanine level features a maze like collection of indie artist studios, local art galleries, and a massive stock of bargain books, including a selection of $1 books. Parking in downtown LA can be a pain, and this store doesn't have its own parking so I think the easiest place to park is the surface parking lot next door at 449 S. After paying $15 for lot parking, we discovered the store had closed several hours early. There was no notice on the door, and we couldn't find any announcement on their social media. We called their sister location in Los Angeles, and the staff seemed just as surprised as we were that the downtown store was closed. They didn't know why it had closed early either. I understand that unexpected circumstances can require a business to close early. A notice on the door or a quick online update would have helped us avoid a wasted trip. Afterward, I left a voicemail and sent several emails asking for an explanation. In those emails, I also asked whether they would be willing to offer some type of store credit as a goodwill gesture for the wasted trip and parking expense. I received no response to any of my messages. My disappointment is with the lack of communication and follow-up. An explanation or even a brief acknowledgment would have gone a long way, regardless of whether they chose to offer store credit. We had been looking forward to supporting the store, and the experience left a bad taste in our mouths. I hope they improve their communication so other visitors don't have the same experience. Unfortunately, we won't be trying again. They've lost two customers who were excited to visit.

There are the ones that brings my old memories, and also new ones that i recently enjoyed. So if you think this store is outdated, you are wrong! I also never had any issue with the condition of the books. You just need to pay $7 per hour or $15 for all day. There are little snacks you can buy too. Highly recommended! What a great long established entity for comic book and science fiction fans in the LA area. I attended a few of the very early shows and then a handful of them over the next 20 years or so depending on the guests. These are a few flyers that I kept from the early 80's. As far as I know, it was the only show around at that time (in the LA area) so really ground breaking for that community.

The 01/10/16 show at The Reef felt a lot like the older quality shows of years past, maybe without…read morethe fanfare of a stage and presentations, but the vibe and energy was solid. I hope that this is the permanent new home of the show. The Reef is a much better venue than The Shrine Auditorium. The neighborhoods are similar and The Shrine has better neighborhood options for food, but The Reef has a fresher and more friendly feel. The vendors at this show were plentiful for shopping, very relevant with lots of comic book dealers as well as pop culture toy vendors and related exhibitors. Only a small handful of irrelevant dealers selling adult content merchandise (tho that ties into the 40 yr old virgin stereotype of the whole comic book sci fi gamer geek profile, so sort of does match the target attending audience) and other goods. To a degree this show has an equal showing of comic dealers than some of the larger known conventions in The Los Angeles area, so if you just like hard core shopping for comic books, especially deep discounted below cover price back issues, the quantity of dealers were here. There were also lots of higher grade quality vintage comic book dealers too. There was a convenient parking lot at a flat rate of $15 and admission was $12 to get in per person. They were promoting the next show scheduled for 02/28/16, which looks to be an equally good promotion. I hope this is the momentum this convention needed as the venue facelift to reinvigorate the show and bring it back to the quality of its former glory days of yesteryear. I wish the promoters luck and give them praise for a great start in 2016.

It's clean, has plenty of air conditioning, and has a lot of things to view. Items at Kinokuniya can be a tad bit pricier, but it's understandable. I only wished that they had more fountain pens. Other than that, pretty cool bookstore to check out if you're in the area.
