While I was actually using their service, before the name change, they were adequate. The problem is that after having canceled their service 6 months before, they began billing me for service. I only just noticed that I have been billed three times for a service I canceled before the beginning of 2025 for a total $561.19 which I'm about to start trying to get back. Absolutely the worst, most dishonest company I've ever had the misfortune to deal with. Because they have a monopoly on this area of Alabama, they don't give one damn if they do as they say. I was told a price, in writing, then when I received my first bill...it was nearly 3 times the quoted price. I contacted my rep and was told that she "forgot" to mention the installation fee and that it was an "honest mistake"!!! Honest!!! No, not mentioning an exorbitant fee and then calling it a mistake is LYING, and deemed illegal. When I called the rep, I was then told not only would they not absorb the illegally billed fee, but that my bill was now going to increase $30 a month!!! How the heck is this legal? I never signed anything that authorized this "fee" or anything at all actually. Might be time to get litigious. Avoid this business at all cost. read more

Otelco - Absolutely the worst cable/internet provider I have ever used since the beginning of cable back in the 70's. The entry level is 4mbits which is too slow for Netflix and will not work. I had to increase to 8mbits for $90 which doesn't include modem rental. 8mbits. 8mbits. I just watched a TV commercial for Comcast for 200mbits. $39.99. Really? I can get DSL which has better speed and price but not in Oneonta!! Otelco owns all the lines and is charging ridiculous prices for 1980 speeds and apparently is comfortable with doing so. It really just makes you shake your head in disbelief that a 2018 company is even offering 8mbits. That speed has been long gone with the fax machine. Well, not in Oneonta I guess. There is no zero star rating so I guess I have to select one star which is way overrated! read more

I used to live closer to civilization and had spectrum. I never thought I would say this but- I miss you spectrum. Cable is available five houses down. It's almost worth moving. OTELCO makes my on call job almost impossible with random dropped service on average twice a week. Have to drive an hour into Portland in the middle of the night or the nearest 24/7 McDonald's to get onto my laptop to get the information I need on time sensitive work. Love it. read more

My update after a week of Otelco - Maine: After one week with the 500 MBPS plan I am happy to report that we are pleased with the performance. With our 400 MBPS plan with spectrum, we had frequent connectivity issues when both of us were working from home. We'd need to restart the router, turn off wifi on several things (our phones, roku, wireless cameras, etc.) in effort not to have problems during zoom meetings. We've had no problem since the install. On Friday, I even did a little "stress test". I turned on both of our TVs and used rokus to stream live news through several meetings, including a time when we were both on separate zoom calls. My wife used her ipad to play a game and iphone to watch videos during a portion of this time. We left wifi turned on, on phones and other wifi connected things. Not a single problem! We're sold! We will be turning in our spectrum stuff later this week. Now about the install, etc. I called on 2/17/22 and had an install appointment for 2/22/22. The installer came a little early, but was super independent, so I was able to keep working (still had spectrum service going at the time). It took him about 40 minutes. He had to drill a small hole through the side of the house about 1/3ish of an inch (so make sure you have permission if you are not an owner of your space). He provided all of the equipment (a wifi router, a couple of other white boxes that were mounted to the wall and a small surge protector). After he left, I was a little confused by the sheet of instructions that he left, so I called the tech support number and had a very pleasant call to walk me through things. I even called again the next day to ask about the download/upload speeds (and learned a bit about how my work's VPN impacts speeds). Very pleasant experience. Actually talking to humans. It was a nice change, lol! And outside of work, this past weekend we streamed a ton of stuff while also playing on our phones. Not a single problem. We're glad we made the switch! P.S. This is all a personal, consumer's review. I am in no way connected to either Spectrum or Otelco in any way other than being a paying customer. I was just really interested in seeing if the hype about fiber was real AND was intrigued by the lower costs that Otelco was offering. read more

Don't waste your time or money getting Otelco as your service provider. They are not customer oriented and will start you off with fast internet so that you think you got a good deal but then they will see how much they can slow it down before you complain. Their hours are also extremely low, so calling them is almost completely out of the question read more
