I have been going here for years. He is a great dentist who does two things wonderfully. He always gives a thorough explanation of what he is doing, why he is doing it, and what to expect (with kids also). And in my experience he is excellent in causing the least amount of pain possible. I grew up with him as my dentist, and I think that has made all the difference as to why I don't mind going to the dentist. Additionally, the staff that works here is also very nice and friendly. The office is always very clean and hygienic. He has a lot of clients and many of them are students. So sometimes you might have trouble scheduling during summer, winter, and spring break. But ultimately, they'll try to squeeze you in or just remember to try and call earlier. read more

Very friendly staff and Dr. Ota seemed very knowledgeable and well informed. He explained what issues I might have and how they should be corrected in great detail. Also worth mentioning he personally did the cleaning and checking of my teeth (some dentists seem to have a specific person just for teeth cleaning) Although they were able to work with my insurance (Cigna) as an out of network, I ultimately preferred the comfort of an in network dentist and unfortunately won't make this my regular dentist. If they were considered in network I have no doubts I would make this my dentist. read more

I visited Dr. Ota's office from a referral and I must say that I had a pleasant experience. I was in the process of searching for a new provider and I put off getting my teeth looked at for 10 months. As a toothache started to occur, I made an appointment which was 2 weeks out. I called back a day later because the pain started to become very uncomfortable. They were able to squeeze me in for an emergency appointment on a Saturday, the very next day! Dr. Ota was able to fix a cracked tooth and if I waited any longer I could have required a root canal. Dr. Ota and his staff was very professional and attentive to my needs. Dr. Ota is a wonderful dentist. If you need a dentist, go to Dr. Ota, he is great. I'm from the east coast and before Dr. Ota I'd only been to two other dentists my entire life. The first was my family dentist who was great. The second was a dental student who was awful. I never understood why people hated going to the dentist until I saw that dental student... I was a little nervous going somewhere new but when I moved out here I had to find a dentist. Dr. Ota was recommended by a friend of mine and I'm very glad I trusted her recommendation because Dr. Ota does a great job. I've only had one previous dentist in my life. I was really young when I went there but I just remember leaving his office with sore gums. It just hurt when my teeth were being cleaned...he was a nice man, but something just wasn't right. My family swtiched to Dr. Ota, and I always leave a happy camper when I'm done. All the staff is great. Susan, who works the desk, is such a pleasure and always makes time to chat with me if she's not busy. We talk about everything: jobs, traveling, school, family. Dr. Ota is gentle, yet he makes sure my teeth are in tip-top shape. He's always giving me tips and pointers to make sure I'll keep these bad boys until I'm old and wrinkly. Plus: there's TVs in every room, although it's just like a dental slide show playing, it sure beats staring at a horrendous picture. read more

I am surprised at the number of good reviews but I also note they are several years old. I have been coming here for the last year and a half during which I have had 3 cleanings and 1 emergency appointment. In that time I have noticed the health of my teeth decline and I believe it is because of this dentist. The emergency appointment was for a crown that came off and had to be cemented back on. All I can say is since he put the crown back on I have had nothing but pain off and on in that tooth since. When I told him about it at my next cleaning he said it was normal and should go away soon. Another six months later the pain was still there and now a blister had formed on the gum area below the crown so I reminded him about it and he strangely did not even acknowledge this was previously mentioned, just acted like it was a new complaint. He said he needed to take an X-ray of the tooth and proceeded to insert a pin in the blistered area which he called a "tracker" which he explained was needed for the X-ray. Note: The hygienist was in the room helping with the X-ray. When he got the X-ray results all he could say was he didn't see anything wrong but it could be blah, blah, blah and would have to refer me to an endontist. Great job passing the buck. By the way, mind telling me just how my tooth could have gotten to this point seeing as how it started simply with putting a crown back on? Then he left the room and the hygienist began cleaning my teeth. She tells me to open my mouth and starts scraping. I'm wondering at what point either the dentist or the hygienist will realize THE PIN IS STILL STUCK IN MY GUMS and remove it. A couple minutes later still nothing. Then I hear the dentist tell his staff he is leaving for the weekend (it was a Friday) so clearly he's not going to do it. When it became evident that they simply forgot about the pin, I asked the hygienist to remove it. Her response was "what pin?" The level of incompetence this staff has demonstrated is alarming. I absolutely do not recommend this dentist. read more

I've never had to have an emergency appointment with him (I take good care of my teeth on a daily) but see him every 6 months for a cleaning. Dr. Ota has been my dentist for about 12 years. I've been to dentists before who are scary or mean if you have a period of time where your dental care is less than perfect. Dr. Ota has always been friendly and professional. He's also gently and careful, which I really appreciate (I had a dentist once who scraped my teeth in a way that really hurt my gums, if I hadn't flossed well). I trust him to do a great job and to give me the best dental care available. He's the best dentist I've had, so even after my family moved, I decided I'm willing to now take the trek from Hollywood Hills to Torrance rather than finding a new dentist. A friend who grew up in the Torrance area referred me to Dr. Ota. Best dentist I've ever had, so it's sad I no longer live in the area. Dr. Ota is very nice, knowledgeable, and anal retentive. Anal retentive isn't a bad thing! I saw him for 4 years and for at least 2 of those he would run through the list of things wrong with my teeth (like I hadn't heard it before - yes I know my gums are receding, yes I know my teeth are crooked a little...). But I would rather have an anal dentist than one that's not concerned with all my issues. He does a great job. His hygienist can be hit or miss. Front office lady is the sweetest. read more

Simply Amazing! By far the best Dental experience EVER! I am always greeted with a smile when I walk in to his office and they are always on time. His front receptionist is very accommodating with appointments and they have always worked with me if my insurance has not covered a procedure. Dr Ota is just awesome. I'm sorry to write a less than positive review. The one filling I received by Dr. Ota basically disintegrated within a few weeks. Apparently there were air bubbles in the composite. I had to have Dr. Ota's filling removed and refilled (by another dentist). To his credit, Ota did refund my money for the bad filling, but still--you shouldn't have to redo a filling with twice the pain. The other issues I have are minor. I was gagging quite a bit due to the rubber "bit" he uses to keep the jaw open (I couldn't swallow with it in--feels like suffocating) and asked him to give me a smaller one so I could swallow. His response was simply no, if I'm gagging, just live with it. I've never had that response from another dentist. The final issue was that at every visit (of several) he seemed most interested in upselling me on more orthodontia (already had it, my teeth are pretty straight) and teeth whitening. read more
