    Tagliatelle Alla Norma
    Christina K.

So delicious! My friend had this on her list to try and we didn't get in on Saturday night, but made a reservation for the next day. We came in Sunday and the food was delicious. I had a strawberry salad with oranges, which was fresh and tasty. I also had house made tagliatelle alla norma, which was a great texture. I decided I'm not a huge fan of the ricotta salata so I wouldn't continue to order this, but it was very well done. We were also offered watermelon at the end of our meal. Food was very delicious and there were so many things I wanted to get so I would have loved to have been able to eat there again.

Found this place through a random blog about eating in Rome by someone who lived here for two years. Tried to get reservations the day if for a party of 3 and they were sold out. Asked about the next night (Saturday) and they were able to accommodate us. Took an Uber from our hotel who got lost in the process and had to drop us 3 blocks away. Lots of pedestrian only streets around there go figure. Got in at 7, the waiter who spoke English sat us. Then we started noticing locals coming in and having dinner as well. We must have been the only Americans in the place. No worries the menus are in both Italian and English. They brought us hand made bread with some mozzarella + jalapeño cakes of some kid that were still hot and steamy. To die for. I ordered house red wine which was the best I've ever had in my entire life. We started with an appetizer of Anchovies. My son ordered the gnocchi, my wife ordered the ravioli ricotta which could be described as tender, silky and exquisite. I ordered the veal escalopes which was a master piece. Then for dessert we got a trio of: Tiramisu Tris di cioccolato Gelato with fruit All there were home made and were omg kill me now I'm in heaven amazing. They gave us a cookie biscuit thing and a complementary lemmonchello for digestion. All told we came out at 98€ In the states this could easily have ran us $300 for the same quality of food and experience. I'm super glad this restaurant isn't listed on the tour guides or any popular tourist blogs. I'm also super glad that we waited until our final night in Rome to have this amazing experience. I'll have to book another trip just to stop in and have dinner here before flying back to Seattle. It's that amazing that I would travel just for dinner.

My friend and I had dinner here our last night in Rome and what a great way to end our time in the city! I made a reservation through Facebook for a weekday night about two days in advance. It is a romantic, elegant atmosphere where locals go so I would recommend dressing up a little nicer and brushing up on Italian dining etiquette (aka we wish we weren't in shorts and had known the bread wasn't to eat beforehand). I ordered the gnocchi and it was the best I had in Italy. The host also gave us complimentary limoncello, which truly rounded out an incredible dining experience. If I find myself in Rome again, you can find me here.

If you want to see how quickly a pleasant evening in Rome can turn into a ridiculous public scene…read more-- come here. On International Women's Day we stopped here with my parents and our 4-year-old daughter after walking around Trastevere. We ordered espresso for everyone and sat outside. Our daughter had a small tiramisu we bought at another shop a few minutes earlier. Within seconds the owner stormed out and started shouting at us aggressively about the tiramisu. Not explaining. Not asking politely. Just yelling. We tried to explain that we had ordered drinks and were paying customers, but instead of behaving like someone who runs a hospitality business, he escalated the situation into a loud public confrontation. Then his younger partner came out and joined the shouting. Two grown men screaming at a family with a small child in the middle of a tourist street. At that point our 4-year-old daughter started crying because she was scared by the way they were yelling at us. What was the reaction of the owner when he saw a child crying? Did he calm down? Did he apologize? Did he show even basic human decency? No. He kept yelling and demanding we leave. Rome is one of the most welcoming cities in the world and during our entire trip we met wonderful, kind people everywhere. This place was the only exception. If you are a tourist or a family with children, do yourself a favor and choose literally any other café in Trastevere. There are hundreds of them. Hospitality clearly isn't practiced here.

I was disappointed with the bread and cookies we purchased. It's difficult to do everything well. Perhaps narrowing on one specialty is best, but I'm old school. I miss the days of the fruit store, the formaggi shop, the wine merchant, etc. Everyone was lovely at Il Gianfornaio, and reminded me of how my American education was lacking. I can only speak English and a smattering of French. The merchants at Il Gianfornaio spoke English better than me. That was embarrassing.
