I literally could not believe the food and my experience here. It SURPASSED all of my expectations - above and beyond. When I say this was the best steak I've ever had in my entire life, I gravely mean it. It was insanely soft, tender, juicy, all of the best adjectives you can think of to describe the perfect steak, here it is. A common thing for steaks is a lot of restaurants in Italy can make it chewy, but not this one. Everything else we ordered was phenomenal too. You just have to come here to see what I'm talking about. Don't be shy, order a big chunk of steak. It's worth the splurge.

This has got to be one of my favorite spots to eat at in all ll Mondo! This place is filled to the brim with ambiance. It's a one of a kind experience not to be missed if you're in the mood for the famous chianina Bisteca ! The service is perfect and personal as the owner comes to the table to determine how big of a steak will feed those at your table endulging. He then writes the Kgs. On your paper table cloth pans off he goes to cut your special steak. It's really an experience. I never miss an opportunity to indulge when I visit.

Agree with all the others ... just a great meal - big lunch for 6. We did multiple courses - the tagliatelle pasta in oil, garlic was amazing. The steak, of course was the hit. Interesting note - we actually had part of the meat cooked medium-rare vs the usual mostly rare. It was a happy surprise to a few at the table who were not totally rare fans. The staff was amazing and did a great job managing the entire crowd. We spent €200 for multiple courses including steak wine and desert for 6 at lunch. Well worth it!!!

If you're ever in Montepulciano, you have to eat here. It's pretty far up hill but well worth it. Make sure you have reservations because most people do and if not the place fills up fast. The staff is friendly and welcoming when you get there. You get a medieval vibe when you walk seeing all the old brick and wood still holding the place together. Probably some of the best service we had in Italy, our server was great constantly checking on us. If you haven't seen videos, the place is known for the owner coming over to help you pick out the perfect size steak for you (if you order it) then presents it to you before cooking it. We love both pastas and the dessert was the perfect ending to the night. We had a lot of food and thought the price for everything was way better than expected. Highly recommend to everyone!

This should be a must visit when in Montepulciano. We booked reservations for 9:30pm the day of and got luckily to get in. Reservations are at set times during the day so you will see people milling around outside as the previous group finished up their meal. It's all about the meat so you must try it. For a table for 4, we split 2.9 kg of meat cut into two pieces. The main person chops the meat as you sit there and brings out the steak that will be yours. He actually brought a bigger one for us and we said we'd rather have two smaller ones. No problemo. They are noted for cooking the steak over an open fire. We ordered ours medium-well and it came out more like medium in USA. Excellent! We had picii and tagliatelle first course. We also shared bruschetta. I added roasted cauliflower to eat with the steak. Service was as excellent. You will likely be seated at tables with other parties. Expect a good 1.5 - 2 hours for your dinner. Enjoy the cozy atmosphere and excellent food. Everything is so reasonably priced as well. Excellent experience!

We waited 10 years to come back! The first time, we happened upon this restaurant as they opened, were seated first, and within minutes the place was packed. Having no idea about the restaurant, we only ordered pasta. It wasn't until seeing the owner bring huge slabs of meat to the tables that we realized what we SHOULD have ordered. Fast forward 10 years. On our way back to Rome from Tuscany, this stop was a must. Worried that we wouldn't get a seat, we arrived early, put our name on the reservation list for 12:30 and then relaxed until they opened. The wait was worth it! While he has been doing this for years, the owner was funny and personable. We took a picture with our slab and it was cooked to perfection! 1.3 kilograms did the trick! The 12:30 seating on a Saturday did not totally fill up. But the second seating seemed to fill up quickly. Highly recommend if you are in Montepulciano.

Food (5 out of 5) -- we kept it simple with a 3.58 lbs steak, arugula and pear salad, and a couple of desserts. All were delicious. The steak was outstanding! Drink (5) -- delicious house wine for less than a coke. I need to move to Italy! Service (5) -- a well run, exceptionally busy place with great service. Atmosphere (5) -- does it get any better than that view of the steaks and the oven!? Tables are shared and this small restaurant packs the tables in. We enjoyed chatting with our everyone around us ... in our awful Italian.

Very good food, very low prices. The steak was $60 - would have been about $130 in NYC. The service was great. They don't listen to you when you ask them to cook to a certain temperature (and I asked in Italian), but it's part of the charm. A rare steak is very difficult to cut and chew; also, cooking to medium brings out more beef flavor. (Please don't fight me on this.) They cooked it a second time with no fuss. Had some wild boar with tagliatelle, an anchovy bruschetta, the cheapest carafe of (good) wine ever, and some other stuff. Ate the steak for a couple more days. Highly recommend, get in here.

The owner writing on our paper table cloth just how big our steak will be!

Best steak ever. Loved the pasta course is well. Honestly one steak is enough for 4 people with all the other delicious things served. You must make a reservation though. Don't miss this while you are there.

Wait right at 7:30pm opening time! Make reservations!

This was listed as one of the best places to eat in Montepulciano and definitely make reservations cause there was a wait out the door before opening. They open at 7-7:30 and everyone waiting basically had reservations. They do two sittings - one at 7ish and one around 9ish right after the first group is done. They have a fairly quick turnover. We came the night before and made reservations for the next night and it worked perfectly. This is a share your table with other groups, family dining experience. Which made it fun to meet other people from all over and forces you to converse with them. Adds to the experience if you add me. They also have huge blocks of t-bone (Bistecca Alla Florentina) and the owner basically hacks off a piece and brings it over to you for approval before they throw them into the wood fire oven to cook. He brought one that was like 2kg for a group of 3 and we had to decline cause it was so big! We ended up with 1.5kg, which was perfect for 3 people if you like to eat like I do :) The overall experience was fantastic - the hacking of the t-bone, the presentation, the wood fire, the owner coming over to write on your table the size and price of your steak, and at the end he comes over and writes down everything you ordered and does mental math right there on the table! Impressive! We were spoiled by our Bistecca Alla Florentina in Florence so thought this was lacked a bit. But it was still tender and delicious and definitely on the raw side, so if you like it more done, tell them beforehand. They don't ask so make sure you specific if you want to. We like it just how they prepare it cause the meat qualify is fantastic. Overall good steak, good pasta, truffle pecorino from the region, house wine and delicious! Thumbs up!

Admittedly, a fair amount of places were closed, possibly due to it being a drizzly (but still so atmospheric!) Monday evening, so when I looked at the menu for L'Altro Cantuccio, I was excited to see that it was open. I was even more excited to see a vegetarian entree that I figured could be made vegan. We entered the restaurant at an early time for Italy, 7:30 or 8, but we'd skipped lunch and we also were calling it an early night because we were staying at an agriturismo about 45 minutes away. Not surprisingly, we were the first customers (by the time we left around 9:30 or ten, there were only 2 other tables). If you're looking for a dark, intimate dining experience, this is your place. It's so beautiful inside, like an upscale tavern, with ambient lighting and a fireplace. I was totally unprepared for this utterly exquisite dining experience, but I had a hint of what was to come, once we were greeted by an urbane set of waiters. I asked if the farro dish could be made vegan and he said it could. That's all I ordered (besides a glass of sparkling wine, and my husband ordered some kind of steak), but we received several curated complimentary amuse bouche, presented like the edible works of art they were. Only one item was not vegan, a duck liver macaron. Besides two tiny bites of vegan pates, there were these incredible bites that appeared to be olives but were savory cocoa butter truffle that contained olive oil and crushed olives (like a filled chocolate). I never had anything like this before. This was followed by a single cherry tomato... or so it seemed! It was actually a bite of pappa al pomodoro. And then there was the divine bread service (see my photo). The main event, also presented like a work of art, the farro. It's absolutely delicious and I treasured each bite of grain, truffle, mushroom, beans in a porcini broth. This was followed by a complimentary dessert, two tiny chocolate shells with a passion fruit topped non dairy cream and two tiny spoons of chocolate pop rocks. I can't say "exquisite" enough! Now I must note my appreciation here for the service, as I was informed as to exactly what things were vegan when they brought out all the complimentary courses (I am not entitled... I never expect such service). I walked in without a reservation and this meal exceeded my expectations beyond words. And coming from the US, it blew my mind that the cost of this extravagant meal was comparable to a casual dining experience. Core dining memory may be an understatement. I'd return to Montepulciano if only to dine here.

Our Perfect Last Night in Tuscany - Best Romantic Dinner in Montepulciano at L'Altro Cantuccio!…read more After a day of strolling up and down the winding hills of Montepulciano, my wife and I stumbled upon L'Altro Cantuccio, and what a find it was. Tucked under the archway of an ancient stone breezeway, our romantic little table caught the cool evening breeze and gave us front-row seats to the quiet hum of this timeless Tuscan town. The dim lighting and centuries-old walls made it feel like we were dining inside a piece of history -- only with the comfort and warmth of a dear friend's welcome. From the start, the staff set the tone, with Leaza leading the way. "Outstanding" doesn't quite cover it -- her knowledge of food, wine, and spirits transformed the evening into an experience. She presented three perfect wine options, guided us like an old friend, and had that rare gift of knowing when to be right there and when to step back, letting the romance and flavors speak for themselves. A rustic bread board with pillowy focaccia, nutty seeded bread, and golden olive oil -- the perfect Tuscan welcome. We began with cocktails -- a Negroni for me, an Aperol Spritz for my wife -- followed by an appetizer that can only be described as edible theater. The crispy egg "candido" with pecorino foam, green coffee, and Sichuan pepper arrived in a smoked ceramic egg, releasing an intoxicating aroma when the lid was lifted. The smoked ceramic egg, opened to reveal the delicate crispy egg "candido" over pecorino foam -- like unwrapping a culinary gift. Alongside came a complimentary aperitif -- whimsical bites that looked like one thing but tasted like another -- playful and creative. A tiny "tomato" that burst into chilled gazpacho on the first bite -- a fun and surprising twist. For our first course, my wife had the ravioli of stewed pigeon topped with seared breast, Sangiovese wine reduction, and a butter-sage powder. It was perfectly cooked -- tender, rich, and delicious. I had the truffle pasta, a nest of golden tagliolini crowned with a snowfall of freshly shaved truffles, the scent so intoxicating it turned heads at nearby tables. The truffle pasta -- a mound of golden tagliolini under a generous snow of fresh truffles, plated on sculpted white porcelain. Both dishes were paired with a 2018 Talosa Nobile di Montepulciano, deep ruby in color and velvety on the palate -- a flawless choice from Leaza. The mains were pure Tuscan indulgence. The local Chianina beef cheeks were slow-cooked for 50 hours until they practically melted on the tongue, plated with seasonal vegetables and a silky sauce. The Fiorentina T-bone steak was a feast for the eyes -- thick, juicy, beautifully charred -- presented whole before being sliced and served on a black marble slab. Too full for dessert, we closed the night with an Indonesian Kopi Luwak coffee. The brewing process was presented tableside like a ceremony. Sitting there, sipping coffee in the cool night air, hearing the faint murmur of other couples, I couldn't imagine a better way to end our last night in Tuscany. L'Altro Cantuccio isn't just a restaurant -- it's a memory you'll carry home. The flavors, the setting, the care in every detail... you must eat here!

We were asked if we wanted wine and we said yes and that they should choose based on what we shared as preferences - each glass was great. She ordered the steak and I ordered a hamburger. I know, why a hamburger in Tuscany? I thought, why not? This burger was served nearly rare and was the best hamburger I've probably tasted. It had lettuce, tomato, onion, dried tomatoes, and bacon. The steak was delicious, but the hamburger honestly beat the steak in flavor. We asked for two additional glasses of wine, their choice. Once again we were not disappointed. We decided to order dolce and asked what the dessert of the day was. The chef said there were two choices. If the choice we didn't get was as good as the one we selected, it was also amazing. The ambiance was great, the service was fantastic, and the food was very delicious. We will definitely be back. The review where someone "dined", but then didn't order dinner or anything beyond appetizers is not "dining", which literally means eating the main meal as well as eat "dinner". Please try a dining experience. I think you'll like the decision.
