N.E.W. Pawsibilities - all these dogs want are a good home and love!

N.E.W. Pawsibilities

We adopted our puppy, Jack (formerly known as Duke), from NEW Pawsibilities on July 4, 2020. He was…read moreone of three littermates all from Kentucky. When we got the dogs, they seemed fine and healthy but unfortunately all three were exposed to parvo before making the trip to Wisconsin. When we chose to rescue rather than purchase from a breeder, we knew there were risks involved, especially rescuing a puppy who was too young to have had all of his shots yet. Jim and his crew stood by our puppies 100% and did everything in their power to bring the pups back to health. Two were treated at the rescue free of charge (ours included), and we firmly believe Jim saved their lives. During the process, he updated us twice daily and was available all times of the day and night once we brought Jack back home to answer questions about what was "normal" during parvo recovery. It's clear he is truly in this to help save dogs, and he saved ours. We are so grateful and can't speak highly enough about our experience. So many of the negative reviews feel really unfair. When you rescue, you are bringing home a dog from a high population area who has been exposed to lots of different environmental factors. To expect a blank slate is unrealistic. Saving dogs takes work, and we knew that going in to the experience. To Jim and everyone at NEW Paws, thank you SO MUCH for bringing our amazing dog into our life. He fits into our family so perfectly, and we can't imagine a life without Jack. He's truly one of our pack and has brought so much joy to our home.

For some reason, this review is showing as coming from San Francisco - I have no idea why. We are…read morefrom Sturgeon Bay WI. My husband and I just adopted a dog here 3 days ago, and truly believe that, if we hadn't taken him home that day, he would not be alive now. The dog was neutered on Friday, shipped from Kentucky to Wisconsin on Friday or maybe Saturday, and up for adoption on Sunday, when we found him. He wasn't on any pain medication, nor did he have an e-collar to prevent him from licking his incision, which looked like it had been stitched up by someone with absolutely no veterinary training. He was at least 10 pounds underweight, and he desperately needed bathing. By Tuesday the sutures had popped open and he had a nasty infection, requiring a very expensive surgery. Testing before surgery revealed that he had pellets from a BB gun in one leg, had slight pneumonia, and has indicators of Lyme disease. None of this was disclosed when we adopted him. As another reviewer said, the $400 adoption fee (which is considered a "donation" and is non-refundable if you return the pet) would be fine if the pets were properly cared for and if all medical conditions were disclosed. It seems that the shelter owners want to get as many animals in and out as quickly as possible, with minimal investment in their care. In fact, the woman who worked with us said that they do not have a veterinarian on staff. As far as the facility: there was a strong smell of urine when we came into the building, and there were quite a few flies around. We didn't see where the animals are kept, but were told that all the dogs were in one area during the day, with access to go outdoors, and that at night they were in kennels, two or three to a kennel. Outdoor areas had privacy fencing so we couldn't see what they were like.

I cannot speak for the animals themselves, but I probably feel like they are comfortable here while they are staying there. Their adoption prices are fair, and they always make sure that you know that you have a free donated vet visit within a certain amount of time after adopting an animal. The staff is always very courteous, knowledgeable, and makes sure that you understand everything. They really do have the animals' best interest at heart. I have seen so much love and patience come from these people. I am always impressed. A few times before we adopted our dog, which was our most recent adoption, we came in as a family to look and browse. Even after telling them very specifically that we would not be adopting that day and were "only looking", they were still so very courteous and kind and made sure that we had any and all questions answered. It was about maybe a whole year and a couple of visits later before we actually adopted. They treated us with respect each and every time. I have no doubt that they treat the animals with love and respect, as well. I liked my experiences so much here, that I actually recommended that my niece (who lives in Green Bay) adopt a dog from here. She just did last week!

I wanted a chihuahua and it was taken off their photos, that was because he was being saved for me! But I remember being worried. My little Harley is doing great, they made sure my other Chi's were up to date on shots and they all met to check compatibility. The adoption fee for the Chihuahua was quite steep, ~$200. That alone should prevent someone without $$ from adopting lightly. But cats are cheaper, and for 'farm' cats, even cheaper. I thought everyone was super nice, super helpful, and the pets were clean, and the shelter smelled and appeared very clean. What more do you want? Harley had been neutered while there. As an RN, I was able to remove the sutures myself. No one is perfect, instead of leaving ONE * star, talk to them. Maybe leave 3 stars, it'd be more realistic. They are not bad at all! Quite the contrary.

Each and every time I went in with the intention of adopting, SCHS workers helped me pick out the pet that best suited my lifestyle. I adopted my first cat when I was only 19. When I found that she was lonely I went in to adopt another cat and they allowed me to bring in my first cat so that we could see how she reacted to the new cats. It was fantastic. The staff was so friendly and flexible. On top of that, they really listened when I was living in an apartment, 21, and ready for my first dog. Rather than push a larger, older dog on me (it would have been understandable since they had so many that needed homes!), they set me up with a smaller terrier. He was the perfect dog for me in so many ways. I had never considered a terrier before, but when I needed to move I was grateful that I had a dog that would be accepted into apartment buildings and could ride with me in the cabin of an airplane. I still love the woman who helped me for setting up such a perfect match! The only negative is that their space is small and dingy looking. However, they are apparently planning on upgrading in 2013. In short, if you are willing and able to adopt do it with SCHS.
