It's like Office with some of the slightly off-key, trendy brands common to it- Sugar and Vagabond to name a couple. The retail sales manager of Diverso, Lucas Brownless, has never even heard of Emma Willis, Budd's, New & Lingwood, Hilditch & Key, Turnbull & Asser, Dege & Skinner, Huntsman, Hardy Amies, Richard Anderson, Richard James, Kilgour, Ede & Ravenscroft, and all other upscale shirtmakers and tailors. As far as I'm concered, Diverso, are not true shirtmakers, they just design their shirts in the UK and get them crafted in Italy nothing else. Anyone could do that, it's like they're like Emma Willis or Turnbull & Asser. I've been in this shop twice now, but I cannot see myself buying their shirts. But personally, I'd rather buy from Emma Willis in 66 Jermyn Street.

The Covent Garden store is the London branch of the eponymous Spanish fashion brand. The shop a decent size and stocks men's and women's clothing with casual, formal and evening wear. The prices are typically high end street fashion (60 pounds for a shirt etc.) which is reasonable considering the quality and style of the clothes. There are often sales when prices are often reduced in half which are great time to go, particularly if you are looking for a suit. The formal are evening clothes are well cut and good quality. The casual clothes are done similarly, though they are more interesting. There is an emphasis on natural fibres and comfortable clothing, which makes it a perfect place to pick up clothes for the summer. As a result of the weave/blend (?) the clothes tend to have an organic texture and appearance which I find attractive. I've not had much reason to go in the woman's section but I assume things are similar. I did see the scarves which were rather beautiful. Adolfo Domiguez is a great shop that is worth looking at, particularly as the sale season approaches.

So I did what any intelligent American would do, I hit the mean streets of London in search of a proper men's shop. Enter Mr. Start, set on a brick lane in the super hip neighborhood of Shorditch, this place stands out. They had all of the proper kit, undershirts included. The sales person was gracious and knew the proper black tie terminology (important). I found a premo shirt. The cotton was incredibly soft and it was an insane amount of money (60 quid) which means it had class. My only complaint is that due to their slim fit sizing I had to get an XXL. It just made me feel fat which hurt my confidence, not a good thing going into a wedding. Confidence is important in all settings but especially at weddings. My friends nuptials are going quite well.

I had walked by Mr Start several times in jaunts around Shoreditch, and on a late Saturday afternoon we made our way in jonesin' for menswear with red lines (on sale) as advertised by the large January signs. Luckily, we scored Ruki (sp?) as our assistant, and she is a gem. Ask for her by name. Low pressure, knows her stuff, and quite pleasant and stylish...made the whole affair enjoyable. She helped my fashion-backward husband find a surprisingly affordable suit in a dark charcoal...with just enough trim and fit to squeeze him into the London crowd. Throw in a fitted white shirt, some cologne...and we've got a new man on our hands. Even with the sales, this place is not going to be cheap...but a suit (and the details) are quite a good investment. They do take care of the tailoring, and his new suit was ready to pick up in about 5 days. All smiles from my Mr for Mr Start. (and from me! he looks nice).

My brief story and what I sent them: About 4 years ago I purchased a document bag to replace an LL Bean bag I had for years. Thought I would step it up a tad. Love the bag, but then somehow the metal bracket on the shoulder strap breaks? How is that even possible? Not happy. About 100 hours later (they promise an already achingly slow 72 hours to respond) "Aimee" sends this: Please accept my apologies for the delay in getting back to you. Ted has received a lot of emails recently (probably from crappy products...I added this), and he hasn't been able to respond as quickly as he likes to! (Oh Ted, please make customer service a priority) I am very sorry to hear of the disappointment you have experienced concerning the quality of your document bag. All Ted Baker's collections undertake strict quality control testing; however, we accept that a small minority of flawed items may slip through the net. I will be sure to make note of this occurrence, and it will be taken on board for future reference. (Please make a note of this). What I sent them in response: Ted making a note of something is weak, trite and solves nothing. So far I am very underwhelmed by Teds slow response and weak customer service regarding its products. Shame on Ted Baker for charging a decent amount for its products and then not standing behind  its "quality" products. Would I buy another product or recommend it to others? Seems they are no better than other online places with products probably made in China. And excuses probably from a booklet. Sadly nobody really cares at Ted Baker. Lesson learned: Shop elsewhere. Products attract; Poor service repels.

A unique thing about Ted Baker is that it lets it clothes speak for themselves, and relies predominantly on word of mouth for advertising rather than posters or commercials. I do like the clothes however I do not like shopping in their stores the music is too loud and it feels more like being in a poesy club rather than a store. The clothes are mostly very nice office clothes, they have a sophisticated edge to them that makes them stand out from other brands of office clothes. This particular branch only offers men's and women's clothes and accessories. However, the bran itself offers clothing from infancy, as well as gifts and a fragrance line. You can find branches of Ted Baker all over London so there is no need to make a special trip to this branch.

Once I entered the store I was not only warmly greeted but it was genuine. In fact it wasn't one sales associate but all of them. That alone made me want to shop. I tried on several items and left with a pair of black python looking straight leg pants. Also wanted one of their signature vinyl bags but which one I loved them all! So I got a black with their signature floral print. Signature as ai tried a blouse and t shirt with the print but of course it looked better on the bag than on me. As I hurried to the register quickly in fear of missing my flight home. Note they check your boarding pass and you are not charged duties if you are traveling out of the country. I asked the associate a favor please go through my British Pounds and I will pay the difference on my credit card. Little did I know BP expire so my $5 and $10 need to be exchanged on my next trip to the UK. Would definitely come back next trip. Also not to self they sell bags on wheels so if next time if I want to buy out the store I can.
