Wrist scar that is still healing. Can you believe it!
Hiike R.

I see Dr. Sanjay Desai for my dominant hand issues of carpal tunnel and trigger finger. I had two surgeries and have no scars to speak of. It was a great experience. Kept me informed b4 and after surgery. Started with therapy and then I needed a more permanent solution. Everyone was on time and as scheduled. I even had to change my surgery date due to work, everything was shifted around and rescheduled without a hitch! His surgery and office staff was responsive and helpful. Shout out to Lisa- she gets things done! My Therapist, Barbara Cook was patient, gentle and informative. The other office where I had the procedure done was great- right down to the anesthesia doctor who informed me all about how a block works - so no tubes went down my throat. I cannot even imagine how this place got a bad review. Because everyone was so kind, I went to see Dr. Harry Shia to check out my hip- and that was an amazing experience. I had X-rays and he sent me to get an MRI as an extra measure and everything went well!! I am extreme when it comes to taking care of myself- I will never go anywhere else. #orthovirginia #bestorthocare #carpaltunnel

As a preface, this is SOLELY for the 2 doctors I have met regarding my knees. The rest of the review for both these doctors is under my pictures, which have the page numbers at the top of the page to help with coherence in how the review is written. So as a little background, I am currently undergoing chemotherapy, and have been for almost a year now. Both of the doctors I met with knew of this. I also have experienced chronic pain in my knees for as long as I can remember (yes, even in childhood). I had been experiencing more significant knee pain for roughly the past 2.5 years and have been searching for a diagnosis for both of them since that type of knee pain was different than my typical knee pain. Since undergoing chemotherapy, my knee pain has gotten to the point where it hurts to put any pressure on either of my knees, as well as when there is not any pressure on them (e.g., laying down, sitting down). I also have an extensive pain document where I have documented the different pains I have in my knees, when and where they are present, what I have tried for them, the outcome of those treatments, and what has or has not helped. I can't remember if I showed the first doctor this document, but I clearly remember sharing it with the second. Okay, now for the review. The first doctor I met with, Dr. Jose Reyes, was nice and cordial at our first meeting. We made a follow-up appointment to see how I was doing in a few weeks, which got rescheduled to an earlier date based on the fact that I am pretty certain one of my kneecaps moved out of place since I could no longer crack it and it hurt 10x more than it did at the first appointment. My knees have extensive swelling in them, and the x-ray taken at the initial visit only showed mild arthritis. At the second visit I asked him if the level of pain and swelling in my knees was normal for the amount of arthritis I have. I do not remember ever getting an answer to this. Instead, what I remember from that visit, is him shaming me. He said I needed to do PT, or we could do a steroid shot (which has never worked for me and I've had multiple steroid shots in both knees), or there was an experimental shot (according to insurance) that was $600/knee (1 shot in each knee) that I'd have to pay out of pocket for but that may help. He also said the best thing for me was to lose weight and do PT. Okay, I get that extra weight can put excess pressure on joints. That makes sense. What doesn't make sense to me is telling a cancer patient to go on Ozempic "because it's been approved for obesity now." So why do I have a problem with that? 1. Because I don't want to take away medicine from those who are diabetic (not me). 2. Because I have been trying to lose weight (both successfully and unsuccessfully through MANY different means, including weight loss drugs, since I was 8- or 9-years old. 3. Because losing weight is not my primary goal right now and I am well aware of what I feel I want the next steps to be if I choose to want to lose weight. 4. Because health at every size needs to exist. 5. Because it takes time to lose weight (through ANY means, even surgery), and that doesn't help with my current level of pain. I continually told him that, historically, PT has not helped me for various reasons. I also told him that for every 2 out of 3 weeks (my chemotherapy cycles run every 3 weeks), I have absolutely no energy, it is actually super unsafe for me to be around people or social settings because of how immunocompromised I am, and my pain levels are to the point that I can't even make my legs go straight because they are in so much pain. This is not to say that I will not engage in PT once I am finished with chemotherapy, but simply that I do not see how it is feasible to do it now. By the end of that visit he was very outwardly frustrated and irritated with me, at one point saying, "You're just saying no no no to everything!" So me, working in the mental health field, had more problems with this. Because frankly, when one thing does not work for your patient, you do not keep trying to force that thing on your patient. You work WITH your patient to try and figure out what CAN be done for them now, until other methods may be able to be explored. And keep in mind, the ONLY information Dr. Reyes had on my knees was from the x-rays they did at the initial appointment, which only tends to show bone stuff. I have been dealing with enough medical issues for a good amount of my life (and I am only a young adult), that I was pretty certain there was more going on that just "mild arthritis." I absolutely left that appointment crying, and ended up staying in my car afterward for a good amount of time just crying and trying to process what had just occurred.

Area of removed cyst.

My experience at OrthoVirginia was terrible and life altering in a very bad way. I tore my right, exterior meniscus; I eventually had to quit my job due to the fact that my knee never fully healed or recovered from the subsequent surgery that was done. My doctor, Dr. Harry Shaia was the doctor I was given and he seemed to never take my pain seriously. He never once gave his medical opinion; just kept asking me what I wanted to do. After weeks of failed physical therapy I asked about surgery. He said,"well, if you want to?" And left me and my wife to decide. Since I wasn't getting any better I opted for surgery. Once he completed the surgery the pain kept ramping up and up(even more so than the initial injury)and I started to develop a cyst on the right side of my right leg. Even when I had to go to the emergency room for pain one evening he didn't do anything about it other than throw more opiates at me. I had been on opiates for three weeks at this point and the cyst was starting to look like a golf ball in size. I ended up having to have another doctor perform another surgery to fix the botched one Dr. Shaia did. I am now recovering wonderfully and am having major strides in regaining mobility and strength in my right knee. My new doctor removed the cyst(that had grown 5 times the size of when it was first seen by Dr. Shaia) and had to do "a lot of clean up" but I am now doing much better now that I am away from OrthoVirginia.

Beware: The seating in the waiting area isn't being cleaned in between persons sitting there. Mentioned to the medical staff and the ladies in the reception area how there was no social distancing with the seating. No one seemed to care. If the office isn't going to ensure that the seating is 6 feet apart, then require people to sit in their cars until its time for their appointment. If you are part of an immunocomprimised group, I suggest you sit in your car and wait. That being said, you will still need to get your temperature taken and check in. You will just need to provide staff with your phone number to be called when your doctor is ready for you. Should you decide to sit in the waiting area, bring your own sanitizing wipes to clean the seat in which you're going to sit. Pack your patience because it will be a long while before you're called back. I waited for an hour and saw others who came in long after me be seen and leave.

Everything is via email and if you have questions, you have to go through an outsourced billing/support company. They couldn't understand me (they weren't native English speakers) and they refused to escalate my case to a manager. - I spent THREE months with support trying to get them to see they had my bill incorrect and couldn't get anywhere. I myself had to finally research how to escalate it and get someone to listen to me. - Sure enough, they forgot to include how much I paid as a deposit on the surgery before the procedure. Simple enough - but took THREE months of run around. - In the meantime, I was receiving emails threatening to send my account to collections. I wasn't being negligent, I was consistently pursing support to get an answer, but nobody knows what anyone else is doing. They just send automated late notice/collections notices out without regard for if the patient is conversation with the billing office about the problems. This was by far the worst billing experience I've ever had. It took months to get to talk to someone who was English speaking and higher up than the contracted customer support/billing rep. If there had been a local office where I could go in with the bills they were sending me, and sit with them and SHOW them what my receipts paid showed versus what they were showing, etc. AARGH. As much as I love Dr. Herring, there must be another excellent orthopedic physician at an office that has better billing/customer service. It has now been SIX months past my surgery and I'm just getting to the bottom of things. The hours I have put into this are ridiculous, unnecessary, and disrespectful to the patient/consumer. Do better Ortho Virginia.
