Standard Ortak stuff. Not my cup of tea but seems very popular. Nice shopfront for a reasonably small store. read more

I had mistakingly thought it looked a bit outdated, but they've got some lovely, delicate looking rings for as little as a tenner, Ortak necklaces and an interesting collection of second hand gold charms. A lot of their styles will appeal to older generations, but there are contemporary pieces if you look hard enough. Marshalls is also a functioning store that polishes, mends, customises pieces and engraves on request. The business is a Jack of all trades in that respect, but for the casual browser there are both timeless, modern and unusual trinkets to suit a variety of clinetele.

Perhaps Charmed and Buffy saw that trend flying into my high school, and I distinctly remember my then best friend's room looking not unlike this shop. Shops like Enchantment are becoming fewer and further between, but it's nice that this one still does well. There are little pewter ornaments of delicate garden sprites, elves and fairies lining the shelves of this place, and dangling from the ceiling in abundance. If you're into pixies, healing stones and a touch of magic, then you'll like it. My mum likes ornaments like these and it's a great wee resource not too far from the Royal Mile if you're looking for an impish wee pressie. It's a nice change from seeing green ornaments in the shape of Loch dwelling monsters.

If you like traditional Celtic pieces then this is the place for you, available in silver and gold and in a range of styles. The shop stocks Ortak and Heathergem to name a couple of brands, and I like the Heathergem earrings in particular, with stones coloured from heather stems, so each one is unique. They range from £10 right up to £100 plus, so there is something for everyone. Great wee shop to pick up some traditional Scottish jewellery.

As I have said in other reviews, I have a soft spot for Sheila Fleet jewellery and they have an excellent selection here. Overall, an excellent jewellers to pick up gifts, souvenirs or just to spoil yourself!

It's very small, but utterly brimming with stock. It makes me feel like I'm in someone's attic, it's very personal. The collection ranges from old 1920s pocket mirrors to beautifully binded books, with nouveau inspired flowers running up the spine. The woman stationed behind the desk is absolutely lovely, and although it is an intimate setting she leaves you free to browse without badgering you to buy. The brooch collections are surprisingly cheap and she has a box full of antique postcards. There's something melancholy about rooting through a box full of heartfelt scribblings from another time, but it is nevertheless interesting. For film makers and art projects at least the donated, personalised cards and monochrome photographs would come to a good use. The shop has an icy look about it, with just the glass cabinets holding the jewellery as you come in, and a kind of gray/blue, futuristic look surrounding everything. Minimalist I would say, in a good way, as it makes the jewellery the only focus because you're not peering about getting distracted by fancy interiors. Or maybe that's just me, my attention span is admittedly very short. The smiley lady helping me out with my browsing informed me that the shop stocks a lot of Greek silver designers, and there are certainly a lot of beautiful silver pieces. I thought the earrings and rings were particularly attractive. The simple combination of pearl and what looked like twisted silver in the rings, as well as the angular Coeur de Lion earrings in different colours, were very pleasing to my eyes. A good price range too, in the sense that you can come in and make a casual purchase if you see something you fancy, or go that bit higher in price if you're hunting for special occasion items.

I always associate Ortak with the Scottish themed jewellery that it stocks in celtic styles. Of course this branch does stock more traditional pieces but it was refreshing to see more refreshing displays with contemporary designs that makes this shop appeal to a wider audience. They had some really pretty butterfly and loveheart themed jewellery sets and simple pendants too. There was also a cabinet dedicated to little ornaments and nifty martini glasses for gifts. I really liked a little compact mirror on display with a dragonfly on it, it was very unusual and cute too. Overall, a very nice shop with pleasant staff and fantastic attention to detail.

A lot of their clothes are made out of materials like hemp (their shirts are really really soft!). They sell bags out of that material too. The prices are actually not too bad, all things considered. I mean, most of their merchandise costs around 20 pounds, or maybe a bit over. Other stuff they sell: pillow cases and scarves, gloves and earrings. On the one hand, it's always great to see local retailers and designers being supported locally. And although I'm no art conoisseur there was some gorgeous stuff on display - mainly paintings and sketches of Scottish scenery - and I was surprised at how reasonably-priced some of it was. However, I did get the impression that in the huge big room of stalls and stands there were only about 3 or 4 different categories of things being sold. If you're the kind of person who loves browsing stall after stall of almost identical-looking glass jewellery or silver-plated chokers with semi-precious stones on them then you'll be in heaven here. Otherwise, you probably won't need to spend mor than 15 minutes or so here. That said, if you're in the area on the first saturday of every month then you should pop in for a browse.
