One of the best places for Chinese food and a great atmosphere for family and friends to gather. The entree portions are large plus they have a dim sum menu, which promotes sharing. Family dinners are available as well. I enjoyed my flavorful wonton soup, ate plenty of sweet and sour chicken, took bites of the Mongolian beef, and sampled most of the dishes around the table. I will never come back to this place Let me start by saying I used to love this restaurant. It was one of our favorite. But now, it's on our list to never eat here again. It started with me placing an online order. This is new on their website while I was looking at the menu. I figured this would be best than calling the restaurant. How I was so wrong. I placed it with a 30 minute window. Ordered at 4:44 to be pick up at 5:14pm. I showed up to the restaurant at 5:03pm. There was about 4 other people at the counter. One person just placed their order, another person said her mom called to place the order but wasn't sure when it would be ready. They told everyone 20 min. I showed my ordered and they were going to be me 20 minute. I said I placed my order 20 minutes ago. Ok so I waited... Another lady came in and said that she placed her order around the same time online. Her order number was 140 and she had a long receipt with quite a lot of items. My order was 148, somehow. By the time I asked what's going on with my order at 5:15, they said they go by the order number and they're on 138. I don't think they processed my order until I arrived at 5:03pm. It took until 5:39pm before I receive the order in my hand. I only had very few items, one of which was an order for combination lo mein, plain mantou, shrimp tofu and wonton noodle soup. Mind blowing because I paid $50. The online system also charge a $1 fee, which I did not know about until I saw the receipt. Which would had been fine if my order was done in the time it was promised. Now, the staff was not the most friendly either... the person that handed me the bag almost dropped it because she put it in my hand, didn't say a word and turned and walked away. They cannot be any more rude than that. I was sweating profusely and shaking while waiting for a very long time while I am pregnant and nauseous. Now here's the review for the food. It was not good. We have had some on and off with their food and we haven't been back for a while so I wanted to give them another chance. But their lo mein was soo salty, and they used pad thai noodles. The wonton noodle soup was small container, so bland, literally no flavors, and the wonton tasted so bad. They put really hot tofu that was deep fried in styrofoam container that it put a hole through the container. So my paper bag was soaked and wet within the 6 minutes drive home. The mantou was so tiny for $4.5. Not worth it. All in all, the 4 items that I ordered did not worth the $50 for almost an hour wait, not worth my time or money. Wow! From the sign it looks like they've been here a while. Step inside to a remodeled and modern space. The arch is very cool. Be sure to order off the authentic menu. So many delicious options. Still one of our favorite Chinese restaurants for inexpensive food. Lunch specials are offered 6 days a week for under $10. One entree, rice and a couple of spring rolls for under $10 is a steal. It's been a bit since I last visited, and in that time, Oriental House has gone through a big renovation. When I picked up my to-go order tonight, it was great to see its new space, with a large, bright bar in the front and lots of seating. The restaurant was packed! And the food is as good as always. I tried the Happy Family, with beef, jump shrimp, chicken and veggies in a brown sauce. It was super filling, and the meat looked to be good cuts. I will likely go with something else on a return visit, but it was still delightful. We also got sesame balls, which were a highlight for me. And I started with wonton soup. This soup came with three large wontons in it -- such a great treat on a cool night. My husband got the Szechuan Pork and said it was the best Chinese dish he's had in awhile. I was able to easily put my order in online, and it was ready within 20 minutes. The prices are fair too. Don't overlook Oriental House -- it's a Louisville staple for a reason. read more

My second time coming I brought some family and it was good but some family thought it was nothing to write home about. there is some inconsistency in how flavorful the food is depending on when I go, but overall I will return for some of that egg foo yung. The food is good, not great, for Chinese American food in Louisville. The dry fried beef chow fun noodles are thicker than I expected. They also didn't separate or fully cook the noodles so some pieces were a bit hard. The soy sauce was also too sweet. The egg foo young had lots of chicken breast in it. But the exterior wasn't crispy. It was also missing green peas and carrots. Bean sprouts were there. The gravy tasted like kfc gravy which I thought was kind of weird but worked with the chicken meat. They also forgot to give me utensils and napkins. We loved the hot & sour soup (lots of tofu, carrots, etc), the crab rangoon was delicious We also shared Mongolian beef which had large, tender bites of steak in a great sauce. This review is posted a day or so after we actually ate here. We did dine in at 5 PM on Sunday, 12/31/2023, which was New Year's Eve. It was mild to moderately busy when we arrived and jam packed when we departed around 7 PM. We've been coming here since 1978 and a combination of nostalgia and access to authentic cuisine has brought me back in the years since. This is my first time dining inside here since the last business remodel in the past year or so, as I usually do takeout. The interior is lovely and fresh appearing. Parking is sufficient for the size of the restaurant and easy access on Shelbyville Road near the Mall and the interstate. It seems the takeout orders rival or even outnumber the orders in the sit down portion of this establishment, so I'm happy the business is thriving. I am hopeful it will inspire the owners to improve the quality of some of the menu items we sampled to maintain customer loyalty. We enjoy visiting the dim sum restaurants in Chicago's Chinatown, so this is wonderful to have authentic cuisine closer to home when a craving hits. The egg roll we had during this visit was stuffed with what appears to be a finely chopped slaw mix and was noticeably bland, crunchy cabbage. The interior crunch tending toward raw veggies was surprising because the outer wrapper was fried too long, so I suppose the oil was too hot. Disappointed. We ordered duck feet (12 pieces) $5 and the seasoning was delicious -- savory, aromatic, and spicy. Preparation was top notch. This is a keeper. We ordered from the house specialties menu with sizzling subgum, $16, which is beef, shrimp, and chicken cooked with mixed vegetables on a hot plate and opted for fried rice. Second entree was Hunan duck $14 with roasted pieces of battered duck with vegetables in a spicy Hunan sauce, also with an option of fried rice. We both commented that the fried rice was unlike any we have had in the past. It appeared to be steamed white rice with perhaps turmeric or similar orangish tint used for color to mimic the appearance of fried rice. The entrees and rice were all bland. The duck was primarily batter in proportion to the meat ratio. My pot of hot tea also left an impression that this is no longer authentic Asian cuisine being served. It was fairly dark and seemed to have been steeped too long irregardless of the type of tea -- English? Not oolong! We ordered carry out of fresh string beans with pork $13 which I will say is some of the best I have ever had. The red pepper flakes and the final texture of the green beans was perfect. We ordered pork and shrimp dumplings 4 pieces $4.50 which were tasty. An order of General Tso's chicken $13 was bland and included onions, carrots, and zucchini. Even with several whole red cayenne peppers, it was still mild. Finally, stir fried flat rice noodle with egg and shrimp $14 featured perfectly cooked shrimp, but I did not personally care for the congealed texture of the noodles and sauce, although it reminded me of dumplings. Service was excellent. Our waitress was dealing with a full house and she was pleasant and efficient. I plan to return for the green beans and will try a few more items from the spicy menu to decide if this restaurant will be a keeper. I also plan to inquire about the fried rice version being served before I order it again. I do not want to have to drive to Chicago, so I'm hopeful. read more

This place was crowded on a Friday night, but we were seated right away. Our waitress was quick with drinks and appetizers. She let us know the entrees would take a little longer because of how busy they were, but between the egg drop soup and crab rangoon, which were great, it didn't seem to take that long. The General Tso's chicken, shrimp fried rice, and Hunan chicken were delicious. The portion sizes are generous, and we definitely could have shared. Instead, we took home leftovers. It's a really good dining experience. We went for my birthday (no complementary dessert). 2 couples split the authentic wanton soup, an $11 bowl of soup that fed all four of us, and was excellent. The broth was light and well seasoned, and the wonton were tender and juicy. We each had an egg roll, and they were very good as well, hot and crispy. We ordered oolong tea that complemented my meal. We also ordered 2 dinners to split. A chicken and snow pea and a bourbon chicken, one donnervwith steamed rice and one with fried rice. We all thoroughly enjoyed both meals. This was enough food for all with enough for a leftover meal. We also tried the egg custard dessert. It was light and creamy, and just enough for all to have a few bites each. Excellent Service, our waitress gave us numerous suggestions and was very kind and friendly. It is an older restaurant, been there since 1964 but clean and welcoming. I first came to Oriental House in 1973. When I was a kid it was a magical place. Outstanding food, service and original dishes. Unfortunately the 2024 version is a sad and poor replacement. The interior needed updating, but this remodel makes it look like a Panda Express. The food is on par with Panda Express as well. Crab Rangoon was devoid of any crab that I could find, and the egg roll was average. The War Su Gai looked so unappetizing and for good reason. This dish should be presented as one large breaded deep fried chicken breast, sliced and served over lettuce and or cabbage with brown gravy. This dumbed down version is canned gravy over chicken nuggets. It looked like something a cat threw up and tasted as you might expect, bland and canned. Don't see a reason to return. Also, I've never seen salt and pepper on a table in a Chinese restaurant. read more

They seemed busy but that was more "takeout" orders. We had the sizzling rice soup that arrived promptly. It was good but warm not hot and no "sizzle" from when rice added. We also ordered 4 main dishes egg fo young, Kung pow Chicken, Mongolian beef and a mixed seafood. Unfortunately, the wait for our main dishes was over half hour yet the restaurant was not even full. The dishes were all bland and warm not hot. Our waitress was more busy with take out. Another waitress assumed we were done and presented bill. It was presumptuous since we ordered 10 sugar donuts and hot tea. The donuts were fresh and hot and the best part of the meal with the hot tea. We were going to come back again but ended up taking food home and afterwards even the kids didn't think it was great but OK. After PF Chang's made me wait too long (30 plus minutes after I arrived having ordered online. I counted 20 people waiting to get their orders before I was able to track a human face down and cancel my as yet unpaid for order.) I canceled my order and looked for the best Chinese restaurant near me. Oriental House came up. I'm glad it did. They had as many guests as PFC but the ones here were being serviced and getting their food quickly. While waiting for my order I watched the staff handle an outrageously unreasonable customer with respect (he had ordered a meal and complained about the size/amount of the chicken in his entree. He apparently ate it then came back for seconds without bringing the first dish with him or showing photos of his first order. I'd have told him to kick rocks but they were respectful and remade his order for him. It sounded like he was trying to negotiate down on some lobster dish too.) My order was ready in short order and the portions were generous. I paid less at OH than my identical PFC would have cost too. Good hot and sour soup, pan fried potstickers (though they softened/steamed on the ride home, not their fault), veggie fried rice, and sezchuan beef add broccoli. We were able to eat twice from this order and it was delicious. I paid ~$30 the other day for Wendy's for 2 people and this was just a little more than that and about 10x better. We purchased on December 5, 2025 Salted fish and chicken fried rice- veggie egg roll to go. When we got home we were shocked in what we found. THERE WAS NOT ONE PIECE OF SALTED FISH IN THE RICE. ONE PIECE OF CHICKEN THAT WAS THE SIZE OF MY PINKY FINGER NAIL in the brown rice. The egg roll was actually HALF THE of the egg roll we got earlier in the year from Oriental House . This meal was $25 for one piece of chicken the size of a pinky finger nail in rice and 1/2 an egg roll. We loved the Oriental House and were shocked at the cut back on quality of the food we received. The next day my husband went directly to the restaurant and expressed how disappointed we were in the meal. He asked for a replacement meal. He was told that he should have taken a picture of the food. In other words too bad, they did not believe him. This is our 1st ever yelp review. It may not mean anything but we felt we had to tell what happened at the restaurant that we loved for so many years. We will never go back again. Great wonton soup without being over salty. Great egg roll. Sizzling sub gum specialty dish was fantastic! Served super hot and the portion size was very large. The vegetables were very fresh and the chicken, steak and shrimp were all tender and tasty. Best steak I've had at a Chinese restaurant in years. The rich, brown sauce was flavorful without being over salty or sweet. It was more peppery and garlicky. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the fried rice so I will get white rice next time.
