All I can say is WOW. Here I am at the tender age of 61, having heard for decades that Tai Chi can…read morereally help in every aspect of one's personal health. That it can even "reverse" the aging process! Now I know it's true! I take both Tai Chi and Kung Fu, as Sifu Lou teaches them back-to-back. I have learned that Tai Chi is the foundation of Kung Fu, so I refer to them both as my Chi classes. And I credit them - and Sifu Lou's instruction - with my continued rejuvenation. I started these classes back in the summer and I am now committed to them. I'm not saying that I am now pain-free and have been returned to the flower of youth. I'm saying that I'm on my way. Despite my age, I still think of myself as a "boy," but this boy has extensive and painful arthritis. What I have gained since I started classes is increased flexibility and more energy. And no, I have no illusion that I'll become 20 again!... But I'm learning to manage my body's age so that I'll essentially be a very young sexagenarian. My spirit is already there! With my chi classes, my body is catching up to my spirit. I've long had the goal of hitting triple digits before I leave this Earth. Sifu Lou and Tai Chi are helping me to get there!! One final thing: Sifu Lou is a generous, compassionate and empathetic man. As well as a man of deep faith. He's the guy to teach you Wing Chun!

He is very experienced and knowledgeable about Wing Chun Kung Fu and many aspects of Chinese culture. He teaches the kids not only the skills but also about the health benefits of doing kung fu. He also teaches them about self discipline, self confidence, self respect, and respect for their parents, teachers, instructors, and fellow classmates and more. He maintains control of the class which could be difficult especially with younger students, however, he is quite masterful at managing the class. I used to sit and watch class in amazement at how he handles any disruptions or challenges. I learned a few parenting tips from him as well. The classes are typically a mix of conditioning and skills with games at times. He would have special classes with a party at the end and games for holidays and traditions like Christmas and Halloween where he'd also give the kids a goody bag. That was such a nice thing to do and kudos to his Wife as well for her part w/ the goody bags. My boys really enjoyed the classes and looked forward to going.

I have been attending a women's cardio kickboxing and self defense class this winter at Kempo with…read moreSensei Laurie Smith (or Mrs. Sensei as she is in my mind). This is my first time doing any kind of self defense or martial arts, but Mrs. Sensei makes all the women in the class feel very comfortable no matter their experience level. She is so patient and kind and such a mom figure to all the ladies in the class! Mrs. Sensei says she likes to keep things "old school" and doesn't pump up the place with music as we practice, giving us the ability to focus, pace ourselves, and ask questions along the way. She clearly explains the concepts of our drills so we know why we're doing what we're doing. She is always open to answer any questions about the exercises and meets each woman where they are in their fitness journey. Kempo also gives back to the community twice a year around Valentine's Day and Halloween, offering free classes to kids who may not otherwise have tried or been able to afford a martial arts class. It's great to see that it really is "family fitness" there! Many of the women in my class have children in Kempo's kids' classes and bring their kids out to their different events they host (like movie nights!). The location is easy to find in the Hung Vuong Shopping Center next to the Tutti Toscani's restaurant and Soccer Post store. I'm really glad I signed up for this class, and I hope to attend another class there in the future!
